Vectronix Terrapin PLRF-05
At the recent Gunsite XLR Class I had the opportunity to use the new Vectronix Terrapin Laser Range Finder. This unit is the Sub-$2000 device from the same people who outfit the military with their high end units. The company lists it’s effective range at 2500m, however we have reports in the forum of people using them out beyond that distance, as much as 3000m without issue. During the class my unit was used to 2000m with great success.
The 5x Optic feature great glass, and at Class 1 eye safe laser with a laser type in the 905nm range. Accuracy is given to plus or minus 3m. Small, light weight, yet housed in a tough aluminum shell, this unit not only looks robust but feels like you are holding a mil spec device from where it’s lineage can be traced. It’s truly a different experience when compared to its commercial counterparts.
Scan the terrain below, this was typical of the area that was ranged at Gunsite. With targets here from 600m to 1500+m in the frame. Most of the targets had some type of vegetation around it, and the precise aiming reticle of the Terrapin made it easy to focus in on these man sized targets at distance. The average size target was only 22 inches wide give you a realistic point of focus.
The reticle in the Terrapin is graduated in mils and is illuminated. The optics give the user an 8 degree field of view capable enough for closer range engagement well suited for the hunter.
Water resistant to 1m for up to 60 minutes, the usage rating gives you over 7,000 actuations with two CR123 batteries
If you are looking for a robust, reliable, Laser Range Finder and you want to be able to get consistent accurate readings, this is the unit I recommend. The commercial units from Vectronix’s competitors have usually let me down on a personal level, especially under tricky field conditions, the Vectronix is the choice of militaries around the world and it is easy to see why with this unit. Currently this unit is being offered by a SH Sponsor, Euro Optics and comes in Black or Tan.
