Sniper's Hide Fall Shooter's Bash Thank You

The 2009 Fall Shooter's Bash at held at RIfles Only was outstanding, from the first day of the train up to the last day of the match everyone exhibited some great weapons handling skills, which we all appreciate it. We take the safety of the competitors and the safety of the staff very serious at these matches, as this is our first and last concern. We ask the competitors to do some things they don't always get to do at their local ranges, and everyone's professionalism is what allows us to continue down these roads less traveled. A competition is nothing more than a sum of its competitors and I'm lucky to say we have some of the best at our matches.

Sniper's Hide Limited Edition Rifle Build 2009

We are now opening the build for the 2009 Sniper's Hide Rifle - built off the Precision Shooting Sports Apex VR-1 Action.

This will be a limited edition run of only 25 rifles, serialized and engraved, so once they are sold there will be no more. This action is the same one used in the Vortex Razor Video or as seen in the video montage below.

Bomb Proof - The Vortex 5-20 HD Razor Tactical Scope

Well this is the review you have all been waiting for, my take on the Vortex Razor 5-20X50 HD. As this is an interactive video, you can mouse over elements within the video and click on the interactive elements to link you back to the products you see inside the video.

To start, I want to thank Chris at SWFA for offering up the scope for my review and then giving me Carte Blanche so that I might push the envelope as you'll soon see.

Zeiss Hensoldt 4-16X56 FF

Zeiss Tactical - Hensoldt 4-16X 56 FF

Earlier in the year we reviewed both the 3-12X 56 FF scope and the Spotter 60 for the site and its members. Outstanding products each of them we started out by putting the 3-12X though its paces down at Rifles Only. You can find a series of videos as well as a review on Sniper's Hide. Needless to say the scope performed with flying colors, even after tossing it off the roof of the Rifles Only Shoot House. So, in talking with Nathan, I asked to look at the 4-16X 56 FF scope as I wanted to compare this model to the previous 3-12X as well compare it to a similar tactical scope, namely the S&B 4-16X. This is probably one of the biggest debates we see on the Sniper's Hide forums. "How does "X" scope compare to "Y" brand" because the choices are ever increasing people want to know where to place their hard earned money. It's a completely understandable question, none of the high end tactical scopes are inexpensive. Doesn't matter if you're talking S&B, USO, Nightforce, or Zeiss / Hensoldt, they are all expensive relatively speaking. Let's face it, at a bare minimum you're going to spend over $2000 and that's nothing to sneeze at. That is why we have these reviews, so the members of Sniper's Hide can make the best decision possible even though many can't just run down to the local gun shop and see these scopes. Hopefully the information, and video will give you a better understanding of what you are looking at.

Volkmann Combatant Carry - Robar NP3 Coatings

Combatant Carry Custom Coated with Robar's NP3 Coatings

Sniper's Hide Volkmann Combatant Carry

About a month ago, Luke Volkmann asked me if I wanted to bring my Combatant Carry in for some refinishing work. Recently he started using Robar's NP3 coatings and Luke felt this coating would hold up to the hard use I was giving his pistol. Several classes and 1000's of rounds, the Rockcote was definitely showing some wear from the Serpa holsters, so I said, "why not". Well, the finished product is here and its nothign short of spectacular.

Pure silk.

Volkmann Custom 1911 - Sniper's Hide Edition

Volkmann Custom – Combatant Carry 1911

Volkmann Custom 1911

It’s not everyday you find buried treasure in your backyard, or for that matter, hidden talent around the corner. That is exactly what I found lurking in my local gun shop, the Gun Room in Lakewood, CO. Inside the Gun Room, shop owner George Horne introduced me to Luke Volkmann. Earlier in the year, George had told me about their plans to start building custom 1911 pistols; now the fruits of their labor were coming together as Volkmann Custom was cleared hot and ready to roll.

Zeiss Spotter 60 - The Professional Choice

Zeiss Spotter 60
Since the first time I saw the Zeiss Spotter 60 at the Shot Show several years ago I have been trying to get one here in the USA. It was nearly an impossible task until Nathan Hunt of HUDISCo came along and began distributing the Hensoldt line of Zeiss Optics here in the US. We were lucky enough that Nathan attended this years' Sniper's Hide Cup at Rifles Only and brought the Spotter 60 for us to use on the line. Lucky for us, not so lucky for Nathan because I don't think he has seen his Spotter 60 except in pictures since that weekend in April.
