Hello, im new to this forum as well as bolt action rifles. Im not new to shooting by any means just never had an itch to shoot beyond 300 meters. Never had to when i deployed either.. I purchased a Remington 700 sps Varmint (.308) with a really ugly camo pattern design on the stock. I got it for 450.00 at my local DICK'S Sporting goods. I thought it was a good deal seeing that everyone replaces the stock anyways. My question is what is the difference in using a solid base mount or a 2 piece? 1" or 30mm scope? Sorry for the nooby type questions but i figured i would take a step back and ask some pros before i can take a step forward. Weapon will be used for target and varmint hunting. Thanks for your help in advance!

It's not an ugly camo pattern if it is the Mossy Oak Brush pattern. The stock is not very good however. That camo pattern rocks!

Yes replace the stock. First thing that went on mine.

One piece base gives you more room to play with eye relief on your glass. I like it better than two piece mounts.

hey buddy you are gonna have to get some thick skin to hang around here. but to answer your questions, go with a 1 piece base, EGW if your on a budget or if your not Badger, Seekins, NF. Go with a 30mm tube scope more adjustment, and any rings of your choosing

alien319- how far out do you shoot on average with that setup? I was planing on using a lupy mk2 12x pwr i have. should be good enough to start with.

A 12x Leupold will be sufficient for magnification purposes. I don't know offhand how much elevation is has but I would get a 20 MOA base just to be on the safe side.

The cheapest SPS-V you can find is an excellent platform to start from. This is what mine looks like now:

Haven't gone more than 200 yet. However, it is plenty accurate for the range I shoot mostly.

lonewolf, that's a very nice rifle as well, looks like it gets used often. well thanks for everyone's help and advice, should have her ready in 2 weeks and then time to get some serious range time before my first hunt with a scoped rifle.

Congrats on your new rifle. The first one - the first bolt (the first any) - is always special. Enjoy.
