Has anybody ever tried to file the tips of the Amaxs. I was told by a guy who shoots at Camp Perry that it is like bullet pointing. He said it will give you less drop in the bullet. ?????

Why? They are already pointed and uniform with each other. I wouldn't mess with them.

you maybe confused w/meplat trimming ....this is a good idea on jacketed HP as it makes them all uniform.....and expect a loss of up to 1 moa at distance

The Amax tip is already part of the ogive profile and runs about 0.015" across. I've yet to see a jacketed HP meplat that size.

The comments by the gentleman from Perry are rather suspect, I'd like to see what data he's basing that claim upon.

wink

For this game meplat trimming and bullet pointing (completely unecessary w/Amax's) come nowhere near improving the rifle's ability as much as practicing good marksmanship fundamentals will. If you can hold the differance that crap will make at distance, you are a world class shooter that probably doesn't need online advice......

When someone has a quick fix for the loose nut behind the trigger, I'm all ears.

I do realize and understand all the things you are saying. I did see the bullets and he did point them. Did not know if anybody else was doing this.

dar,

I moly coat bullets with steel ball bearings, leaving them in a vibratory tumbler for about 45 minutes. I've noticed that process will make the AMAX tips on a lot, but not all; of the bullets pointier. When I segregated the pointier ones, the results on target weren't much different than the regular bullets.

HTH,
DocB

I always thought that the Amaxs where good bullets. I don't know much about the moly coating of bullets. I have never done that. Some shooters really like that. Wouldn't you change the BC of the bullet by changing the tips? If so would it go to the negative or postive side?

I have tried the bullet pointing. I may have not done it right but I didn't notice a difference.
