Which means we got to see him at Family Day this afternoon!
He also got a short-term duty assignment to assist the local recruiters, so he gets another two weeks at home--IF they assign him here and not somewhere else in the region. Infantry school is backed up.
He was already his own man before he left, but now he's a Marine. Picked up "the walk" and some new and positive habits. But he's still BoomerTG1 in all the good ways.
It's been a good day.

He's not out of the woods just yet. Tell him he's his own man but still easily influenced. His leadership style is as green as he is. Best advice I can give and a wise Marine once advised me is to take bits and pieces from every Marine he comes in contact with and learn what works best for leading other Marines.

Went from too hot for the wimps from elsewhere to train some days ("black flag", IIRC, if temps are above something easy like 110F), to so cold at night up at Pendleton during the Crucible that he thought he was going to die.
Yes, he's a Desert Rat.
His relay shot later in the day and he missed a wind call. Third-highest overall score in the Platoon, and the #1 recruit, of course, was shooting before the wind came up. But hey, you take what conditions you draw. He understands that.

Tell him congratulations on the good marks. And be sure to thank him for his service to our country.

Best advice. Find an older guy who keeps his nose clean and stay near. Watch, listen, learn. Folks who like to argue are not helpful, and eventually, all they are is boring. A bored marine is headed in trouble's way.
That's plenty at this stage.

The day before we were graduated, my BNCO gave us a speech with some advice. He told us that when we get to our first unit there will be two people standing out front waiting for us. One will be a hardass worried that we don't know anything and eager to teach us the right way. He will correct all of our mistakes and offer guidance on any issue, then wear us out if we made the same mistake again. The other guy, slouching, will teach us the shortcut to everything if we will only listen.
He said the choice of who to follow was ours, but that decision would have great influence on the rest of our lives. I am glad that I chose wisely.

I will await dusk, and give three mighty blows to the black horn. Then I will tost first those who I have known who have Fallen. Then I will toast Marine's Past, then Marines I served with, and then brother, I will toast YOU, the Marines who serve now. YUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT!

If that was Kyle "The One, the Only" on close to a dozen T-Shirts in the stands on Family Day, then yeah, the undoubtedly met.
Dude's over at his friend's house right now. I'll have to ask.
