Trying to determine the best buy for the buck on a .22 suppresser. I have tried 4 suppressers; I can only remember the names of 2. One was an outback II, the other was an AAC Aviator. I honestly couldn’t tell much difference between any of them. Because it is such a pain in the @$$ to sell it once I get it, I want to get one I’ll be happy with long term. I’ve read recommendations that I purchase a can that can be taken apart for cleaning, but on the other hand I’ve read that you never really need to take them apart. The guy that allowed me to try his collection says that every 3 to 5 thousand rounds he soaks his in WD40 for a couple of days and they come clean enough that they work well. I’ll be using mine on a 10/22, Remington 504, P22, and a ceiner 1911 conversion. Of course I’ll have to get all but the P22 threaded. If I decide on one that comes apart I’m leaning toward the AAC Prodigy. If I decide on one that doesn’t come apart I’m leaning toward the AAC aviator. This is only because of my friends experience with AAC, not because I have a clue what is good or not good. If you recommend others, please explain why. If you dislike the ones mentioned, please explain why? Thanks Jeff
I am an AAC supporter thru and thru. On this debate, I would purchase a SilencerCo Sparrow.
I have an AAC Pilot, I have an AAC Element on the way, if I was to purchase another one I would be buying the Sparrow myself.

I like the AAC Element for .22 (don't have one though), but it is pricey and I guess considered a premium .22 can. There was a gentleman who had several for sale on the forum a couple weeks ago at $475 and that is a great price as far as I can tell.
The Sparrow is supposed to be very good .22 can. A bit less expensive.
I'd make sure you can disassemble the can for cleaning. The Gemtech Outback seems very popular but is not designed for user dis-assembly (can be done apparently). So, clearly not everyone feels the need to have a take-apart .22 can.
I would give very serious consideration to the Outback...great can. Sparrow is just plain awesome and a breeze to take apart and clean and is almost as quiet as the Outback. Dave Saylors at Liberty Suppressors would be a great source of info for you. He does incredible work !!

Why do you faver the SilencerCo Sparrow and the GhillieBear at PrusikUSA? Not trying to argue, just looking for info.
Ok, I like the Sparrow due to the fact that it IS a take apart can. It is quieter than my pilot on my p22. Its cheaper than the Element. Its super easy to take apart and was very thought out when it was designed as a take apart can.
Those are my reasons for the Sparrow.

A lot of guys on this very forum sell suppressors every so often. A "WTB DEMO 22lr SUPPRESSOR ON FORM 3" post might get you a gem.
I'd look for a demo unit a dealer might want to move. That's where your best buy would come in. Dealers get and move Demo units that are perfect and barely used for great prices. This also guarantees you won't get a lemon or out of Q/C standards unit for your first one. Some dealers only sell demo units they shoot for a round or two to get around MAP agreements which only apply to new and unused products.
I'd let availability and your desired price help guide you. GhillieBear's Less than $200 can is less than half the price of the other models available for a REASON. If you don't understand this concept I would like to trade you a comparably equipped KIA for whatever you currently drive...
Take apart 22lr suppressors come with increased weight. If it comes apart for cleaning and it isn't completely Stainless Steel, it's a FAIL. Non take apart cans are lighter in weight and require a nominal fee and return trip to the manuf every few years or so. Some companies do the first cleaning for free.
Personally, I decided a long time ago to buy suppressors from companies that will be around in a few years. I only buy lightweight aluminum ones and if they get full of crap and start to sound bad, I will just send them in. I'd rather spend some money and save the time, mess, and danger to my health caused by scraping lead off of baffles. I own a take apart alumium 22lr suppressor and after the initial fun of cleaning it subsided I will never clean it again. With a stainless 22lr suppressor you can take it apart and throw the pieces in a solvent tank. Can't do that with aluminum.
I have the AAc pilot and have shot it side by side to the aviator. I would get the aviator. It is just a tad longer then the pilot and you can hear a slight difference esp on the first round pop.
I love my pilot, but if I could pick between the two, i think I would go aviator.

Can you throw the parts from a titanium can in a solvent tank the same as Stainless?

I honestly don't know. I only have experience with ti in rifle cans, which don't need to be cleaned or taken apart.
What does a 22lr ti suppressor run price wise? I don't even know who makes them in 22lr. And then we would need to look at what benefit using ti would have over stainless or aluminum compared to the price of the respective models.
I would venture a guess that a ti 22lr suppressor would be extremely cost prohibitive vs aluminum or stainless steel. The difference in weight should be very minor. Now on a rifle can, ti makes sense for certain applications to just reduce the weight significantly.
Best buy? I've got about $205 in my take apart aluminum can. $200 for the Form 1, and less than $5 worth of aluminum. Of course the lathe is going to set you back a little bit more. CW

5.5 ounces, Ti + stainless, rated for everything rimfire (plus a little full auto). $535 on the 'site, my dealer is about the same from my memory. Have not dealt with one, but I'm hoping to hear a demo of one sometime in the not-so-far future. I'm real interested in it.

I'm not averse to weight so the SWR Spectre has worked very well for me (well, actually both of my Spectre's have worked well - I liked them enough to get two).

I'm looking at buying a Spectre as well. I already own a Trident 9 and am really happy with it. I talked with Bryon at Major Malfunction today and he mentioned that the Spectre, Element, and Prodigy were all good cans(didn't ask him about the other in this thread). He did say that he sells more Spectres than any other can.

Spectre, Element, and Prodigy are pretty much the cream of the crop as far current .22 cans on the market. I own and element and a Pilot and they are both quiet, I will tell you that my element is only a little bit quieter than the pilot, honestly you have to actually pay attention to notice the difference. Pilots are really cheap now too, but of course they are going to fill up overtime. I would recomend a take appart can. go over to silencertalk and also search on youtube for "thompson machine" they have a new take appart .22 can that is only 200 bux and they have video of it being short side by side with other cans and it sounds really pretty good. Defenitely a good value at that price. Honestly its going to be 5-800 for a top the line can from a industry leading company or like 4-500 from a new company and their product is basically the same.

Not to be a dick, but NO. The product really is not basically the same.
Now if you meant they are both suppressors requiring a $200 tax stamp, then you would be correct. But a blanket statement like the one I took exception to does a disservice to the initial poster, and others who are new to the suppressor world.
OK, I probably spoke to quickly, The fit and finish is probably better on the high end cans, but as far as supression goes, watch the videos and draw your own conclusion. I have personally tested a $250-$300 AAC Pilot against their 5-$600 element and seriously i can hardly tell a difference between the two. i had to do it several times and finally was able to tell a difference between the two. The element was pretty clean with about 50 or so through it and the pilot has about 800 through it.

Yes, I bought the pusher device/tool and I think that it depends on the individual as to its necessity: I like to shoot a LOT, I buy .22LR by the case, and more typically multiple cases at a time. If you are willing to disassemble and clean after every 100 rounds, I doubt you'd need the pusher tool, I do it after multiple thousands of rounds and I don't think it could be taken apart without that tool.
I did basically the reverse of you: I had the Spectre's first and now am waiting for approval on my Trident paperwork.

Josh from SilencerCo came to Dallas the other day and did a demo of his Sparrow and there excellent 45 can which I can't remember the name of, we brought a Outback, and a Spector, the Sparrow was very nice light wieght, sound wise my 23 years of jet maintenance said the Sparrow was on par with the Spector, and a tad quieter than the Outback, there 45 can is simply awsome, dry it was quieter than the HEMS2, wet they were the same, the thing set the SilencerCo apart was the unquie cam lever system to align the can, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JhZHIfXrX4&feature=player_embedded

The Silencerco Osprey 45 is simply awesome! Will definitely be my next can.
