I have a Ruger M77 that will not hold the groups it use to. It use to shoot 5 shots groups dime size at 100 yards all day long. Now I am noticing that my groups are sarting to open more and more each time I go to the range. I tried putting on different optics/mounts, even tried different ammo.

Are there any good gunsmith's that will work on a Ruger M77 chambered in 22-250?

Wesley

Depending on your set up, you might want to have it glass bedded. How many rounds have been fired? I'm assuming you have been using the same load and that your keeping things cleaned. You might also want to check your crown to see if you nicked it on something or maybe a burr developed.

I have a 24" hart barrel and mcmillan stock on it right now. Round count so far is 2782. And yes, I clean the bore at the range while the barrel is still warm.

Just after today, I'm so pissed with how the rifle is preforming that I'm ready to use it for a target itself.

Yeah, I hear ya. Hmm... Well I don't think your barrel Mfger would be the problem. You're in a good stock and if it shot pretty good before then you would think that its something that is progressing. I would say your best bet would be to take it to a gunsmith who has a hawk eye bore scope. He would be able to tell if your barrel is getting eroded in the throat area or what.

Where do you live, I think your best bet would be to make some phone calls tomorrow and ask the ones in your area. You would not have to ship your rifle out and go through all that crap. Just by talking to them F2F you should be able to get an idea what kind they are. You can also send it to one of the bigger name brand shops and have them do it. Heck, they might get you to rebarrel it and glass and pillar bed the stock. I'm not sure if they can blueprint a Ruger M77.

Wesley,

Not every smith will work on a Ruger.

Who put the Hart barrel on it, that would be a good start.

Oh yeah, welcome to the Hide.

Mickey Coleman is just north east of you in Alabama, Link With over 2,700 rounds down the barrel, I would think throat errosion is starting to take it's toll. Re-establish your seating depth if you were against or close to the lands.

I spoke with Don this morning over the phone he explained to me why Rugers aren't a favorite of gun smiths. So I decided to let him build me a custom rifle using a Surgeon action and Krieger Barrel.

I just hope the action and barrel choice will do me a good job in the field.

And thankyou to everyone who gave me replies and imput.

Hey you might want to check with Gradous Rifles in Augusta, GA. I know its alittle far away, but he works close with Surgeon actions. He built me a tactical .308 off of a Rem 700 with an Accuracy International chasis last year. Shoots 5 rounds in one ragged hole at 300 yds. Amazing accuracy. When I picked up my gun I went to the range with him to check it out, and saw first hand what he is capable of. He also shot 2 rifles he had just finished that were Surgeon, made me want to start over again and scrap the Rem 700! He is a very talented gunsmith. He works primarily by himself, but I prefer quality over quanity anyday. Check out his website at Gradous Rifles.com

Robert Gradous is one of the sharpest guys you will ever be around. He is a little different but we all are, that is what makes the world interesting. He has made numerous trips to our shop just to make his point. First time I met him he was very rough around the edges and I thought to myself why in the world do I want to set here and listen to this guy. Then I thought this guy has driven for days to come up and give his opinion and the least I could do is listen to him. The longer I listened to him the more I realised that we was in the past and this guy was in the future. Long story short he told us some things with the promice that we would not pass it on. I honestly feel he is one of the best gunsmiths in the US. If you do have your rifle built by him you will have a rifle that is as good as it gets. We have not only used some of his ideas in our action and also in our rifle builds. Not only is he a good friend he is a very good advisor and rifle builder. If someone was to take and have all of the rifle builders build 10 rifles each. And then take all the rifles and put them to a test and see which of the gunsmiths would be on top. If Robert was not on top I would like to spend some time in the shop of the guy that was. He is a little rough around the edges so when you call him keep that in mind and put up with a little of this to get a lot of that.

I would say that after 2700 rounds through one tube, you have severe throat eroaion with the cartridge. A 22-250 is a fairly stought caliber and will burn throats just like everything else. I have done it with a ruger before as well. I have rebarreled mine as well and it is back to life again. Bottom line, get a new tube and that should fix you up. I would recomend a cut barrel rather than a button, like a Rock or Kreiger. Best wishes!

I could not agree more with what Mr. Prichett said. Mr. Gradous is a professional and doesn't have a lot of patience for those who aren't, but we're not in this for a personality contest. Bottom line is, his guns function, their reliable, fit and finish is impeccable and they shoot where they are aimed, every time. That is what this business is about. If you call him, just don't try to bullshit him. Have your thoughts together on paper and get to the point. After he knows EXACTLY what you wan't, he'll take care of the rest and you will not be disappointed with the finished product. He and I have been through some rough roads together with personalities clashing, but we're both mature enough to get over ourselves and get back to business; Rifles.

Funny you say that because our first "conversation" involved him telling me that if I wasn't serious about rifles, I could go buy one from somebody else. LOL. No joke. Rifle Nazi is probably a good way to describe him. He despises the thought of one of his rifles being a "safe queen", only to come out to look pretty when it's being shown off to the fellas. He only wants them in the hands of people who do alot of shooting. That attitude has cost him alot of business to people who aren't "serious", but he will go out of his way to accomodate those people who are serious about having a "business gun", as he puts it. He will do whatever it takes to please you and make sure that your satisfied with your rifle, just don't try to b/s him about shooting 2" groups at 1K in a hurricane and all of that stuff. He's been around long enough to spot b/s pretty quick. He really is a good guy, he just really sweats the small stuff, which makes him hard to be around sometimes. But that's why we pay him the big bucks, so he can sweat the small stuff on our rifles and we can sweat the small stuff shooting them.

I spoke with Mr. Gradous and he said that he is coming out with his own line of custom and semi custom sniper rifles. He said that he will be starting with a "lower priced" semi custom with all good components but limited choices for the customer that he will try to keep in stock for immediate sales. From there he is gonna be building full custom 700's and Surgeons. He said he is getting away from contracting work and getting more into his own line of rifles.

I've found Robert to be nothing less than accommodating to me and the people who have called or come by while I was in the shop either visiting or working with him. To call him a rifle Nazi is about as irresponsible as it gets, even if it was meant as a compliment.

Robert is serious about his rifle work without a doubt, but he is far from and order filler. Sure, it helps any smith to have all of your ducks in a row when you contact them, but if you have questions or concerns Robert is more than happy to help you out. If you just want to let him know what the end result is your looking for and want to depend on his opinion alone, he'll get you there too, which is the route I'm taking. Keep in mind, he takes every step of the build seriously on his end. If it takes and hour to get the lathe set-up to cut the chamber, so be it. If it takes having to send a stock back because it's not exactly right, so be it. You can rest assured that when you get your rifle it has his best work in it, every time.

And no, there are no yelling matches or arguments. I guess if you act out and try to micromanage anyone that there could be a clash, but I cannot imagine how much of an ass you would have to be to rile Robert up.

I certainly regret leading anyone to believe that Robert is anything but professional. He is the most meticulous and knowledgable gun builder I've ever personally been exposed to. The things he has done for me alone have been nothing short of amazing. Excellent post wilzol.

Don and Mickey are both good people. I have shot against both and been in Mickey's shop. They both are held in high reguard in the benchrest circles. The are both very competent at their work. I have also camped beside Mickey at the Firearms Industry Super Shoot a couple of times. About as good a person in general as I know.

Here is my newest Gradous rifle build. Still waiting on scope to arrive, so I haven't shot any groups. I have fired 6 rds. with cleaning in between. The fired brass is perfectly symmetrical. The chamber is good, as usual. JT
