Introducing the NEW Huber Concepts® Tactical Trigger

The NEW Huber Concepts® Tactical Patent Pending for the Remington 700®

At this years Shot Show, I was introduced to John Huber of Huber Concepts. During the show he introduced me to his Remington replacement Tactical Trigger, a simple drop in unit that I just couldn't wait to get my hands on. Ever the fan of the 2 Stage Trigger it was something my Remington Tactical Rifles were lacking, as I usually opted for a GA Precision Tuned version of anything else, mainly stock Remington triggers. Most of the aftermarket triggers out there don't hold up very well to the use and abuse we put our rifles through. In fact I would venture to say a faulty trigger is our second biggest problem we see down on the range at Rifles Only. The fine sand and grit tear the mechanisms up and the bolt guns go down failing to cock, or dropping the hammer when the bolt is closed. We see it a lot so a good tactical strength trigger is always in demand from us.

Huber Concepts makes a bunch of aftermarket triggers for a wide variety of older military type rifles and John holds several patents and patent pending on his designs. His patented anti friction ball design is credited for making his triggers so smooth and reliable, as well the triggers are set at the factory using his state of the art testing fixture for optimal performance.

Now fast forward to just before the Sniper's Hide Cup, I received a call from Paul over at Rock Creek Barrels saying he had a Huber 2 Stage Trigger available and wanted to know if I was still interested in giving it a test run. Absolutely I told him and Paul wasted no time getting me that trigger just days before the match. As luck would have it, the trigger arrived at the exact same time as the guys from GA Precision, George and crew were just strolling in the door at Rifles Only and I immediately put Flounder and Moon to work. While Flounder was busy tinkering with my AR-10, I gave Moon my Werewolf and the trigger and ask him to drop the trigger in before he was too comfortable. Well it took Moon longer to remove the action on my Werewolf then it did to install the trigger. The Huber Concepts' trigger is a simple drop in replacement for a Remington, and while my Werewolf was built on a Nesika K Action the trigger was, go figure, a stock Remington. So this proved to answer two questions, the trigger was easy to install and didn't need any modification to fit in an AI Chassis System. 52.7 seconds later the rifle was ready to roll thanks to Moon.

On the Huber Concepts website you can find a computer print out for the trigger, which details the breaking points and travel details to the thousands. The 2 Stage trigger has an initial take up distance of .068, with an actuation travel of .081. His lock time is 3.3ms with an over travel distance of .062.

Now that we got the details out of the way, where does this trigger stand on the range and compared to other triggers. Well let me tell you, I love this trigger, one of the pros we we find with the AI rifles we use happens to be the trigger. For a tactical rifle you have to like a 2 stage trigger. It gives us a certain level of control over the shot that people just don't have with single stage triggers, especially after they have lowered the breaking weight to below 2lbs like a bunch of people are prone to do. The trigger shoe feels the same to your finger as a Remington, but as soon as you begin to take up the first stage, all those similarities go right out the window.

Recently we have been working on some online training classes, and something that may never make it to a lesson due to the advance nature of the concept has to do with trigger control and sight picture. Basically we found people had 2 moments in time when shooting a precision rifle, the time before the shot breaks and the time after the shot broke and the recoil has ended. What is commonly talked about during these moments is "Calling your shot" and it's described as remembering where the sights were when the trigger broke. It's part of that "surprise" people want you to experience. Well we have been taking a different approach to this, actually its something Jacob has been working with for a while now, and let me tell you, you can really see the difference with John's trigger. The control I can experience over the shot is phenomenal. It lets you know exactly where you are with it, there are no "surprises".

Talking with John about the trigger, he also explained to me how he addressed some of trigger issues of the past, namely dirt and debris messing up the works. First, because of the anti friction ball technology this trigger can be shipped to run dry. What a great idea, a dry trigger that won't be out there collecting dust and working itself into a problem. Next he explained about the housing. Well, he closed it off in the key areas where dirt enters standard Remington triggers. He called it gates, to keep debris out. Its probably one of the primary reasons you'll find his triggers being used on the Ashbusry International Rifles out there. John understood the stresses placed on Tactical Equipment and he addressed it up front.

Moving to a 2 Stage trigger also has other benefits for people who regularly use an AR-10 type rifle, employing the same type of 2 stage action. So you get a consistent trigger across the platforms. And if you are one of those guys who is taking advantage of the Badger Action, well this trigger is perfect for you. You can get yourself that much closer to an AI type setup at a much lower cost. As well they are available with the safety on both the right and left side, so that is another plus in the Huber Concept Column.

Currently Rock Creek Barrels is in preparation for a group by on these triggers. I believe this is a perfect opportunity to take advantage of the pricing they are going to be offering. These triggers are not cheap but through the group buy Sniper's Hide members will be able to save a lot of money on them. I know I'll be taking advantage of the special pricing for several of my rifles.

The triggers are offered in 3 weight ranges, which are set at the factory using his state of the art equipment, These weight ranges are, 1. Military Model at 3.75lbs to 4.25lbs, 2. Varminter from 2lbs to 3lbs, and the 3rd, the Sniper weight which is 1lbs to 2lbs. Each trigger comes with a Performance Data Sheet detailing the travel and actuations of the trigger. Once set the weight won't change, there is no set screw to come, none of the failings of a stock trigger.

Bottom Line, I understand not everyone likes a 2 stage trigger, and I know this trigger can accommodate those shooters well if they want it more like a single stage trigger but the factory set trigger from Huber Concepts is in my opinion, as good as anyone would ever want. It's designed right built to exacting tolerances and make to function in adverse conditions. Trust me when I say, it has found a home on my rifles from this point, I have no need to go in another direction again as far as I am concerned.
