School was let out an hour afterward. I, two other students, and our phys. ed. teacher set up a table outside, filling plastic cups with cold water from the water fountains and handed them to the streams of people who were walking across the bridge from Ground Zero. A lot of them were injured, bleeding, dazed, and hysterical. I tended that table and ran water jugs all the way until 7PM.

Back in 4th grade (late 1970's) we learned about politics/elections. We then had an election for a class president.
After some campaigning and primary voting it was narrowed down to 2 people.
Myself and a child who sadly had been involved in a accident over the summer 2 years prior and had a large amount of brain damage (he missed 3rd grade year).
Well I bet you can tell where this is going.
Final vote and I lost in a landslide. I was pretty upset, who wouldn't be loosing to a "retard". I only use that word as a discription. Not that it matters he was not born that way.
I ask friends "why". Everyone felt sorry for him. They never thought about if he could do the job.
As class president the responsibilities included passing out tests and collecting tests.
He had balance issues and struggled to do this.
Take a lunch count and take it to the cooks. Poor guy couldn't count to 5.
There were others responsibilities, but they elude me at the moment.
I dont think the teacher was amused. The idea was to help her, she ended up doing it all for him. I refused to help, class elected him they can help.
Point is these people are elected out of sympathy with no regard to their ability to actually do the job.
