What have you guys found to be a good Hunting bullet as well as a good target bullet for the .308. I am looking to shoot out to 1k, not for hunting but for steel but would like to use the she load for white tail hunting.

Re: looking for a target/hunting bullet

whitetail are relatively easy to kill... think about it, people do it with lead balls, arrows, pistols... pick a "Long Range Match" load and get to shooting, I suggest a 178 A Max

Re: looking for a target/hunting bullet

Look at the berger lineup, after that I would lean towards the A-MAX. It's not a true hunting bullet but I have heard alot of good things. Personaly, I use a Sciracco for hunting and SMK's for target. That is since I tried using the SMK for hunting. I will never do that again. The deer went down and died but it wasn't what I wanted. So for now on, I would look just for hunting bullets for hunting. Good luck

Re: looking for a target/hunting bullet

Amax and Berger hunting VLD will do you good for both

Re: looking for a target/hunting bullet

Bergers all the way, they work at short range and long range too!

Re: looking for a target/hunting bullet

178 Amax should still be pushing a bit over 1000 ft lbs at 700Y( at least up at 5000ft). The Berger VLD may be a plus on the BC, but the Amax is not as sensitive with regard to seating depth. In short, the Amax shoots consistent groups even when seated at mag length.

I have rolled both the VLD and Amax, and went with the 178 Amax as my all around, do all bullet. Plus at $20 less a box, the value is hard to beat.

Re: looking for a target/hunting bullet

I like the 168 nosler ballistic tip hunting. It seems to stay together better than the amax's.

Re: looking for a target/hunting bullet

BERGER! 175's. With either 2000 mr or varget. What stick you shooting?? That is pretty darn important In decision making

Re: looking for a target/hunting bullet

Nevermind saw your stick under post. 24 or 26"?? You might want to try the Berger 185 vlds. I am getting 2700 wi a 23" bartlein with 2000 mr

Re: looking for a target/hunting bullet

I've had excellent results on whitetail with the 155 A-Max and great accuracy as well. Berger Hunting VLDs are also great for both.
