What would be the best way to break in a new Remington 700? I've seen a few things where you do five shots and run a wet patch down the barrel then followed by a dry patch after each of those first five shots and then you do five shot groups can repeat the same wet patch dry patch process for 50 rounds. Not sure if that is correct or the proper way to do a break in? Let me know. Thanks

Re: Remington 700 rifle break in

My break in method:

Clean the barrel well before I shoot it.

Take it out and shoot the crap out of it.

Clean it well when you get home.

Done.

In case you're wondering, most people on this forum don't do a break-in quite as extensive as mine. Maybe I'm just paranoid.

Re: Remington 700 rifle break in

Now maybe it's because I shoot Savage and not Remmy's so maybe they have a different break in???

I wipe the bore with a snake or patch.
Shoot as much ammo as I have for it.
Then clean the bore when I get home to check the copper foul.
After that it's lucky to get cleaned twice a year.

I'm really anal about my guns so you might not go as far as me. Hell you might even put yours in one of those case things they sell for them?

For the love of God, just shoot your new rifle.

Re: Remington 700 rifle break in

Figured that was the best route, just shoot the dang thing. Everything else is just a waste of time.

This is my "break in " procedure too.

I will be picking mine up next week and will use the method of cleaning it, shooting the heck out of it and cleaning it when I get home.

. This is my first non milsurp rifle that I have bought in over 40 years and really like the information I can get here.

Re: Remington 700 rifle break in

Clean the factory oil off, shoot until accuracy drops off, then clean.

Re: Remington 700 rifle break in

I usually clean in between every shot for the first 10 rounds but admit that it isn't fun. I think on my next rifle I'll shoot some of the Tubbs rounds that are coated with a polish.

Re: Remington 700 rifle break in

For mine I did the 20 round final finish http://www.davidtubb.com/308-ff-ammo

And then shot 30 rounds cleaning after 5 for the first 15 round and then shot the rest cleaning once I hit 40 and then 50 total shot's. Extensive but I had the time. First 3 round group after that at 300 with hornady tap I was shooting sub-moa at 300 meters.
