Great thread. Usually when I ask a dumb or ambiguous question it's because I don't know enough to ask a good question. It's all in the application details, details, details...but if you don't know what you don't know you gotta start somewhere.
I listened to a podcast with ZCO and they described a different process for FFP scopes. They recommend a low magnification, I think 7-10x, and adjusting for clarity at 100 yards or so. Try it both ways and see what yields the best results throughout the magnification range.
I would suggest buying used from the forum here and get the best you can afford. If you really want to go as cheap as possible to start learning you can go with an SWFA fixed power, then when you get enough exposure and experience and you decide which top tier scope you want and take the plunge...
