Best pellet rifle for woodpecker

Step 1 check The List of Migratory Bird Species Protected by the MBTA

Table 1 to Paragraph (c)(1)—Alphabetical Listing of Birds Protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act

Common name group
Woodpecker

and now we know where Bender volunteers his time, also protected

Fry them up and eat the evidence , once they bore a hole into your house they lose protection status. Woodpeckers are known to fly into the path of pellets for some strange reason around these parts.........

Guess I should have looked into that aspect. Figured it was OK due to damage they are causing. Thanks for the warning.

Any pellet rifle will work if you hit it. Just make sure there are no neighbors watching, or security cameras in use.

This is really step 8 or 9. Step 1 is shoot the bird. Step 2, dispose of bird. Step 3, enjoy quiet. Somewhere you get to step 8 and 9, but at that point....meh.

What better reason to invest in a 40mm launcher and a shitload of “bird bangers”

If your a poor like me, then a 37mm will suffice as long as it is an m79 clone.

I meant step 1 before posting in a public forum ;)

Maybe the OP should post up pics of his kill?

Ideally I’d use HE or HeDP, but apparently we’re not allowed to kill them?
The way I saw this thread was, since it's all obviously hypothetical, facetious, and acronym-enhancing, all wrapped up in ridiculousness, it was only logical to go the next step.

Simply because the nuclear option is so hard to obtain/create. But Amazon definitely DOES surprise....

Probably a sub 17 caliber pistol. The smallest one you can find. Woodpeckers have short arms and are recoil sensitive.

They taste better than blue jays but honestly buy a plastic owl and put near where the lil peckerheads are hammering.

Davey Crocket might end up killing more than a bear

.22 LR bolt rifle
.22 CB cap ammo
If you have a can, use that too, but not really needed.

CB caps will be quieter than a pellet gun by a huge amount.
They are hard to find these days and that is probably why.
CCI appears to have some ???

I had brought those up in another thread, someone mentioned they have been known to lodge in the bore.
I don't have any experience with that, though.

Just a casual observation...

I bought a 22 cal Gamo pellet rifle with an integrated moderator for my wife, She is deadly with it.
BUT...I use a TBAC Ultra 7 223 on my Bergara B14R and it is MUCH, MUCH, MUCH more quiet. Also, 22LR is substantially more powerful than all but the most expensive 22 cal pellet rifles.

there are some suggestions to discourage them without breaking the law.

As woodpeckers don’t have opposed thumbs and can’t operate most pellet rifle triggers or safeties, I don’t recommend a pellet rifle for a woodpecker.

However, they have strong neck muscle and a good beak, making them ideal candidates for a cannon fired with a lanyard and friction primer. Plus they can use their head strength to really tamp in a load of powder and grapeshot.

Pellet rifles should be saved for animals with binocular vision and opposed thumbs. Such as gibbons and chimps.

Pyramid Air just did a little pest rifle review. (Haven't located it just yet)

I believe one of the most popular was a GAMO whisper for the money. I shot an early one a little bit and was pretty happy with it. Accuracy was good pretty quiet overall.

We now use Benjamin Marauders. Pretty serious rig and not cheap.

I would go with a 300 BLK subsonic suppressed, 4 oz trigger break. You will have to strength train Woody for him to be able to operate.
Or
If you want to off Woody you should be able to operate the 300 easily, won't be any evidence left.

This alleged *someone* was an idiot ?

I've shot bricks and bricks of them, never even a dud round.

I used to live in the big city and there was a norwegian rat infestation when I moved in....they would walk the electric wires.
Technique...
You wait till they have to go around a pole, it slows them down and gives you a decent enough backstop.
There is no longer a rat issue in that neighborhood :D
CB caps kick the ass of just about any pellet gun made.....you'll have to spend $1500 or so to get a better pellet gun than a CB cap 22.

BTW, I never said to get Aguila Colibri rounds, those suck and I could see one getting stuck in the bore.

Any crosman bb rifle works very well so I'm told from the guy working the gun department in Walmart with no teeth wearing a AI Hat . I'v been told its like sending a 338 lapua at them the way they suddenly fall straight down at 32 ft per second. Another guy told me it works on bats in your eaves as well.

In WA, ‘in the act of predation’ permits some lethal recourse. Your state may have similar language in the Game laws.

12 Gauge beanbag rounds are supposed to be non lethal.

All the “it’s illegal” type comments are fucking hilarious. Yall must be city folk, or suburbanites. Just do your best to turn a blind eye to us dirty law breakers. We do all kinds of other swarthy shit too like shooting squirrels when they knaw holes in the eves of the house, and shooting Blue Herrons off the pond that has been freshly stocked with catfish and crappie.

cool.

but you do know there's a difference between what you do when no ones around in real life and what you post about in an open Internet forum crawling with G men and Feds, right?

maybe have more situational awareness, country boy

You know Lowlight has already received calls from the woodpecker cops, right?

They are among us every day, just waiting to pounce on the first woodpecker crime. I hear they'll shoot your dog.
