Remington 513T Scope Mount

I recently bought a 1952 U.S. Marked 513T. I am wanting to mount a scope on it, but it does not have any existing mounting holes (not even for the old style Unertyl scopes on the barrel). I found the mount made by Ken Viani. If I got this mount, I would still have to have it drilled and tapped in front of the receiver. Would this lower the resale value of the rifle? Also, does anyone know where to find a swivel stud that will fit the front eight holes to be used as a bipod adapter?

Would that be the easiest/best way to scope it? And would it detract any value from the gun? I personally don't mind drilling and tapping the receiver. I just don't want to hurt the future value of the rifle.

That is what I was thinking. I was just making sure I wasn't destroying the value of the rifle by D & Ting the receiver. The Redfield sights are ok, but I would prefer to have a scope. DFOOSKING, I saw in a previous thread that you were looking for swivel stud to attach a bipod. Did you ever find one?

9H mine is an early model with the smooth receiver.

Rob, I had emailed him prior to posting, but if I got Ken's mounts I would have to D&T the barrel. Ken's mount uses the holes on the barrel in front of the receiver for the old style unertyl scopes. Unfortunately my 513 does not have these mounting holes. I have learned that either way I will have to D&T for mounts. Now I am just wondering which option would be best.

Just drill and tap it. It's the easy solution.

do you know of a good work around that will not require that I drill holes in the receiver? It seems like the old Stith mount would work since Stith had one version of his mounts with the rear mount that mounted to the side of the receiver and used the place where the leaf sight dovetail was used for the front Stith mount. All of this was set up for the old Lyman and Weaver scope’s so people didn’t have to drill néw holes.

my problem is I don’t know which Stith to look for. They come up on EBay all the time.

Try the EGW Winchester 52 Target (fits Kimber 82C, 82G, Rem 37) Picatinny Rail 0 MOA I use this on my 513 T and it works well.

I should have read a little better mine has the old style scope mount I did not need to drill.

Here is a pic of the rear base on my 513T. I assume the EGW rail would mount here, right? I think this base was for a Unertl scope. Also do you know how long the Picatinny rail is? I was going to mount my old Weaver K4 (or K6) to it and the K4 has only about 3-5 inches of eye relief.

Sorry for all the questions, but I do really appreciate the help.

Mine mounted on the barrel just ahead of the receiver. I had plenty of room to mount my Weaver T10. Looks like yours is the same.

Thanks!! Very helpful. I repair old Weaver fixed power scopes (and have a few in my inventory with different reticles -K2.5, K3, K4s and K6, as well as 3/4 “ tube varieties).

I will trade you a handful of three for one of those nice T10s ;), but I am joking ‘cause I doubt you’d do that!

Personally, I'm in the camp that you make the gun what you want it to be. If it requires drilling and tapping....do it. If mounts exist....grab it.

These guns were MADE to shoot in competitions. The RFC crowd can look at added on wood cheekrisers or cut short stocks with butt hooks attached and side drilled optic mounts and they go, "Ooooo.....Aaaaah.....look at this vintage rifle....wonder what kind of ass it must have kicked back back in the day.".

And then in the next sentence they come unglued because I drilled and tapped my 513T and won my first match after like 4yrs off. And later qualified the for the NRL22 finale with it.

If you don't want to do that....I get it. I'm fine with that. There needs to be some minty examples out there. But few actually are. These guns weren't ever expensive or rare or considered "fine firearms for their day". They are good and they were built for end users who weren't gentle on them.

Sorry for the rant. Hope you get your rifle up and running. But if you don't....don't sweat it. You can buy a Tikka or Ruger brand new and it be easier and cheaper.(Remington can't even try anymore it seems :( )

I've owned multiple Rem 40X's and my current match rifle is a Bergara B14R. It's not a 40X on feel but it kicks the shit out getting a 40X running for match shooting.

Thank you again! Very good comments and you’re right, it’s mine and I can do as I please. I doubt I can afford a Unertl.

Makes a lot of sense. So, either a Weaver # 42 or #43 base will work. Wonder what a ‘smith’ would charge to drill those holes? I don’t have a good drill press.
 
Just wanted to share ....

Took the Rem. 513T to the range for the 1st time today. This is my last target. I shot off a bag, at 50 yds using Browning 40gr BPR LR. (using peep with a round insert in front globe). 30 shots on this target (with many through the same hole). Pretty happy with the gun. A scope would obviously help my old eyes a lot.

this is my brothers 513T i built for him. made my own scope base (and 1 for me). stock was a replacement from Numrich that I cut up and modified.

Does your mount utilize only the holes on the peep mount or did you have to drill new holes? Thanks

Gus I know this is an old thread but I would like to build a mount for my 1941 513t is has the scope barrel blocks installed. any ideas?

I know it's almost a year later but I just installed a EGW winchester 52 base on my 513t. It took the place of the rear unertl base
