Hello all. I just created a new account here (previous account was shared between a former friend of mine). He made some rather daft comments on here before so I've decided to part ways and post under my own private username.
Anyhow, a few days ago I ordered a Schmidt Bender PMII 5-25 with locking turrets and tactile clicks from eurooptic.com. Double-turn is included with all 5-25's now I believe, so that's standard. (http://www.eurooptic.com/schmidt-bender-pmii-5-25x56-l-p-p4-fine-mrad-mtc-lt-ccw.aspx)
I received it today, mounted it and logically wanted to run to near bottom of travel since I will be zeroing @ 100 yards and am utilizing a 45 MOA base.
What is interesting is that the reticle is moving even when the set screws in the turret are loose (and even completely removed). Windage, no problem. Elevation, moves just like they were normally torqued down. I tested this with a white piece of paper with a dot drawn on it @ 25 feet away.
Now, the manual that comes with this scope is old... it pertains to the previous-gen knobs. Their website(s) are no help either as they simply haven't updated their manuals for these newer models (that I have found anyhow). I own a previous-generation S&B also, which requires the one pull up until the o-ring is visible, then you zero the dial(s). The current generation knobs don't come off, or slide up, or anything. They even still click when the set screws are backed off, which I read is normal (they click even though no adjustment is being made to the reticle). For the record I am not a fan of this at all. If I feel a click, I expect the erector to have moved. If I don't and it's smooth, then I know the cap is slipping and no adjustment is being made. You basically lose this ability with the current-gen S&B. Technically, in a proven working scope like this you'll always wonder if the set screws are truly tight and are actually adjusting the erector, since they click no matter what.
I will of course be calling S&B in the morning, but has anyone else experienced this issue? If it truly does turn out to be faulty (which I wouldn't see any other way it couldn't be) then I would be rather disappointed with S&B's QA department! The only thing I can think is that the turret cap is pressed too tightly on the erector rod, or the "dummy" plastic set screw in the third set screw hole was lodged in there too deep from the factory.
Simply stated, a $3729 scope should be capable of zeroing out of the box!
I will report back what S&B suggests after I talk with them.
Thanks in advance,
Lee
