338 Norma Loads
10/20/2014 Last edited 10/21/2014 by midgetorama

I am shooting a 9.5 twist Bartlein that finishes at 26".

With a 300 grain SMK I am getting slight ejector marks with 85.0 grains of IMR 7828 SSC and a CCI250 with Norma brass. Velocity is only 2715 fps.

The best accuracy with this bullet, powder, primer combo is 82.5 grains at 2632 fps. Single digit ES.

I am seating the bullet with a 0.025" jump.

I was expecting better velocity. I may try Retumbo eventually.

Any one try US869. 1smalljohnson told me to give it a try. I've just started messing with it. The highest I went was 99 grains and if I remember correctly I was in the mid 2700s. This was with a Berger 300 out of a 26" barrel. I'll post more after this weekend hopefully.

I have a good buddy that is using us869 in his 300rum pushing 230s. Ive thought about it, but what he is running into is a lot of carbon buildup, carbon ring.

If a guy is looking for a powder, definitely give rl33 a shot. Ive ran some of it and it gives excellent velocities.

Here is some info on rl33.
97.7grns rl33
300grn berger otm.
215mag
2863fps 26" barrel
3.725" coal - single load.
Es 14.22
Sd 7.00
This gave me a 0.103" center to center group at 100yds.

I did a quick velocity check prior to loading for groups.
1. 95.0grn-2738fps
2. 96.0grn-2788
3. 97.0grn-2732 - velocity dip.
4. 98.0grn-2861
5. 99.0grn-2899 - hard bolt lift

I shot these 5 rounds at 300yds and the resulting group was 2".

It'll fit...

I know it seems like a lot, but the density of the RL33 is higher then say H1000 where you'd have a hell of a time with 90grns.

89.0 gr of H-1000 with 300gr Berger OTM

3.602 Cartridge Length ... I'm a couple thousandths off the lands.

Averaging close to 2800 fps from 27" bbl.

5-shot groups were 1.125 @ 200 yards.

I managed one 3-shot group at 200y for 0.625" NOT sure I could reproduce it.

I'd strongly recommend Berger boolits across the board. My 6.5 CM loves them too. Super high ballistic coefficient on both calibers.

My Retumbo tests for 338NM were averaging 2715 fps.

Close to 2900 fps from a 338 Norma out of a 26" barrel?

How is brass life?

I`m building a 338 Norma with a 30" Pacnor 1-9 twist barrel and hoping for 2850 fps with good brass life.

brass life seems to be good. I'm not running a lot of the rl33. my main load is h1000 which i have previously listed on this page. but with RL33 a guy can get up there in velocity. Just giving the guys some insight. My numbers will vary from others.

Settled on 89gr of H1000 pushing a 300gr Berger. Shot it on a ridiculously hot day...occasional ejector swipe, primers look good, no sticky bolt. At 1071 yards it hits steel with authority.

15k off the lands
AVG 2809FPS, SD of 4.3, ES of 9

Also will note that for my barrel the POI is the same for both 88gr and 89gr of H1000.

I have a question (or favor) for the group. I am making display for my brother who is a sniper. Would anyone be willing to make me 2 inert .300 NM and .338 NM cartridges? I will pay for them. I do have some specifications that I will discuss. Please let me know and thank you guys.

Got a little data to add.

Rifle specs:
Rem 700 action
24" Lilja 9 twist #5 spiral fluted
MBM 5 port ti brake

81 - 2578
82 - 2615
83 - 2662
84 - 2669
85 - 2714 - near max

285 Hammer Hunter, H-1000, .020" off, OAL 3.833", really long bullets:

I haven’t seen a ton of info on the Berger 250 elite hunters for the 338 Norma. Seems like a better fit for the case capacity over the 300 grain pills. I’ve got a brand new Norma and it is throated for the 300 grain Berger’s but I’ll be starting with the 250s. Starting at 83.5 grains of h1000 as I can’t find much info to start at. so we will see how it goes this Wednesday. Will post results and here and hope some more people post theirs. Also thinking of trying the 260 or 246 hammer hunters with h1000 for a dedicated hunting load on this, and was told by hammer to start at 88 grains

Just got into a 338 NM and slowly gathering load info before my rifle shows up. What kind of brass/barrel life are you getting ? And with the current powder shortage does anyone have a good load for the 285 eldm with RL22 (I’ve got a lot of that for my 300wm but nothing else).

I'm on 6 loads with Norma brass , that includes load development so a few hot ones in that pile . Working really well so far single digit SD's and great Velocities as you can see in my table

I've shot the 250 Berger OTM behind 90gr of Retumbo and 88.3gr of h1000. It shot excellent but I preferred heavier

So, I.ve been here for awhile so I might as well start sharing some of the data I've gathered for the 338NM.
Found a load with SW 50BMG and 300g Lapua's.

I know, 3 shot groups, but still pretty happy.

Still need to see how temp resistant this is, but with powder availability thought someone might be interested.

Has anyone worked up any loads with 300 grain SMK’s, CC’s or OTM’s using LRT? Nearing the end of my build and going to start load development.
Thanks

I am working up loads with N165 and 300 grain Berger OTMs. I have not seen any load data for this powder, but it is listed as on the Vhit Website as a stable and accurate powder for heavier bullets, especially suited for the 338 LM. Any thoughts on what a decent starting charge would be in a 28" barrel 1-10 twist for 338 NM?

That's an awesome shot group. I did not know you could work up SW 50BMG in 338 NM with that accuracy. Did you have a compressed load at the 96 or 96.5 gr loads?

Not quite, but I'm at 3.618 OAL.

Spoke to Bob Blaine, Capstone Precision Group, and got the following load data for Berger 300 OTM with Vit N165.

338 NM
28" Barrel
3.680 COAL
N165 77.0 gr @ 2,561 fps
N165 80.8 gr @ 2,603 fps
96% Case Fill

No data yet for Ramshot LRT, but will share that load date once available.

G8TOR you might want to watch the N165 as it hasn’t proven to be temp stable to my shooting buddy. He worked up a good load pushing 300 grain SMK’s in the winter in Fairbanks but when summer rolled around he had crazy pressure signs every time he shot it. Enough to scare him away from using it. Stuck bolt (not sticky but stuck), blown primers etc.

Appreciate the good G2. Do you know if he was using a compressed load?

I don’t believe he was compressed, but close. He was running them at 2,750 FPS with 86.6 grains of N165

If your sporty enough in the cold even the best temp stable powder probably won’t like the heat.

In my 7 saum and 338 edge it’s had pretty good success at a mild temp speed gain.

Moses42ak,

I'm shooting in Florida where temp stability is not an issue. As long as you keep your powder and primers in the house during summer. You can shoot pretty much all yea long and never expect your ammo to vary from 72-80 degrees, unless you have your rounds sitting in the open sun.

got some free time this weekend and work up some load development with lighter bullet.

250smk 88.2 RL 26
Avg 2925, ES 10 after 8 shots. No pressure sign at all, easy bolt lift.

going to try the badlands 255gr high BC bullet later.

Jake, what did you end up settling on? I’d like to hear what you found out as I’m shooting 250gr otm’s using h1000. Any info would be great! Thanks!

Gosh it’s been sometime since I worked with this but if my memory serves me correctly I was a 88.6 grains for with the 250s. They shot right at 1/2 minute and held that out to 900 yards or so. I can’t remember the velocity I ended at but I think it was around 2750. Seemed kinda slow but was very accurate

Thanks Josh! I’ll work up to and and see what I can get.

Not sure if that is viewable or not. If it isn’t, I’m sure I’ll hear about it and find another way to post it.

Sweet...Moses42ak! Finally some new data for an impressive caliber. I've been reloading Sig Sauer brass with 76gns 7282ssc, CCI 250, with 300 grn Berger OTM Tactical Hybrids. Shooting out a SPR lathed 30" Bartlein MTU 9.3 two. Shot groups are as expected - taking out Bug eyes!

Thanks for posting more load data on this!! Shocker for me cuz the load for my bullet selection shows me 3.6gr over max lol

Hornady 285gr ELDM
H1000-89gr
Fed LRRM
COAL 3.675

Velocity 2726fps
SD 7

Works great with no signs of pressure in my rifle.

I’ve played WAY over what they have listed and way over what I’m sure Alliant would list. I had 2885 FPS with a 300 grain SMK from a 26” barrel. That proved to be a little harsh on the brass. Can’t say that any of it produced viable groups though.

How is the Sig Brass?

Really sweet. I will tell you case dimensions are as close to spec as you can get. They don't box them like Petersen or Lapua...(plastic resealable bags. but I am on my 3d reloading with them and I am satisfied so far. I bought them from Bayou Brass and Ammo and they were just shy of a $1.50 a case.

What would you all think about starting at 85.0 gns of Retumbo with 300 gn Berger OTMs in a 30 Barrel with an additional 9 inches suppressed?
