Sidearms & Scatterguns setting up a sling for my mossberg 500

So I am attempting to mount a sling to my mossberg 500 using a barrel/magazine tube clamp and my mossberg 500 came with a heatshield. But the heatshield has this seemingly pointless plastic divider between it and the barrel. I just wanted to make sure that this is infact pointless before I take my dremel and cut it off because I cant imagine it really matters.
