I’m looking for backpack recommendations or at least a starting point. The backpack would be used for shooting off of and hauling minimal gear. Maybe shooting some prs type matches in the future. I usually hike on my land to different targets and set up in different places to shoot from. I’m thinking in the 30L size range. It doesn’t need to have gun carrying options. Any help would be good, I haven’t ever had a dedicated shooting backpack. Thanks in advance

Do you hunt at all? Do you have a budget? Honestly, after collecting all types and sorts of packs, I ended up selling all of them except a mystery ranch daypack and an exo k2 frame pack. I can do everything I could with the others and more with the load shelf. I can haul steel out or whatever if I need to and I picked up their gun carrier to so I can walk around with that on my pack too if I wanted. After running this for the last few years I wouldn't go back and regret spending so much on packs specific to everything I wanted to do.

Yes I hunt, but I use a small day pack because it’s mostly stand hunting on my property in WI for deer or grouse. I was thinking a bit bigger. I have an older kifaru mmr but that is too big for what I envision. I also have osprey backpacking packs but they are too delicate to be hauling steel. My budget is around $300 or less. Which mystery ranch do you use? An add on gun hauler might be a good idea.

I run the daily. It is similar to a north face style book backpack I'd say, but maybe a touch larger? Way better built tho and super heavy duty.

Should have been clear too that I have the exo frame and the 5000ci bag. I can run frame only or the bag with or without the gun carrier. Its versatile and I like it. 5000ci gets me plenty of space for overnight to a couple days. I don't have a bunch of fancy camping stuff but I've seen videos of bag dumps of guys doing 5 day backcountry hunts with it

I've heard good things about the new stone glaciers too. Look on longrange hunting forum, or rokslide and I'd bet you could find one of them for your budget. Especially with the new 2020 stuff coming out

Mystery Ranch, whatever flavor strikes your fancy.

Does anyone have any experience with the non-USA made MR packs? I think they make most of the civilian and hunting line in Vietnam nowadays. Only the military line is made in the US. Thanks!

Yeah I have the 2 day assault pack and I like it a lot. Only a few months of light use at matches, but it seems fine.

I have MR 3 Day made in US and that thing is bomb proof. I’ve gotten the impression their around town series and commuter bags aren’t exactly the same but still better than a good deal of Stuff out there.

Whooo those are some pricey packs (the military line anyway) I thought kifaru packs were expensive....I’m guessing I only really need the hunting line of MR. thanks guys, those good looking packs, know I just have to find a dealer near me to get my hands on them.

I’d keep a eye out for used Mystery Ranch packs. I picked up a used 2013 Mystery Ranch 3 Day Assault for ~$250 with 4 add ons in excellent condition.

Edit: I got rid of my Eberlestock HiSpeed 2 for it

Good idea, I will keep an eye out

Personally I run the Scree 32 as my PRS/Field Match pack. It's basically the civilian version of the 3 Day Assault with fancier yoke to.

https://www.mysteryranch.com/scree-pack I bought mine on sale for $160 I think. I lash the tripod in one of the outside pockets and hang bags off the front. Fits all of the gear I need for a 1 day match easily, and is comfortable enough to handle the weight. It's around 25-30lbs depending on how much food/water I pack

I had a 5.11 Rush12 but it was a little small so I just bought a 5.11 Rush 24 and it’s about right for the essentials plus some extras. The Rush 72 is pretty big and I think overkill for the typical range trip

Packs are too subjective to the end user to get a solid recommendation especially form the interweb.

The Hide favors MR, nothing wrong with that but there are better out there but again, better means what to whom.

I have a couple Eberlestock, used for what I would expect you would too. They are heavy, don't carry weight comfortable but get the job done. I like the gun sleeve as an option to tote a gun. Easy entry as the front panel zips completely open, no digging around to find anything. I have a scabbard on one of mine to tote 2 guns. I have used mine to shoot off us as a rest / support. I like the fact its a backpack with carry handles on the side to tote as a suitcase. While I am not into matches, I did take one to Mammoth many moons ago.

Most of the 3 day assault packs, its a clam shell design with a zip top open do not open wide enough to see down inside and you have to dig around to find what you need. The pack design is from Lowe Alpine back in the early 80s and for reason has been adopted as an assault pack. Updated version would be a medic / trauma pack that zips wide open with pockets for organizing small kit. Tactical Tailor makes a quality medic and 3 day for under 3 bills. Yes I had an original Lowe Alpine and have one from todays copy. To use as a shooting support, use a piece a 5mil sheet plastic cut to the inside dimension of your 3 day, run duct tape around the edges for duct tape storage and to protect from abrasion. This will stiffen up the pack in general for increased carry comfort and allow to shoot from the pack standing on the long edge and short edge without collapsing on its self, rigid support.

good luck

Does your Kifaru MMR have a frame?

Their 22 mag bag sounds perfect if you have a frame. Otherwise their 14er or possibly Quandry would work.

I dont like the Eberlestock bags for much weight or long trips. Perhaps the Gunslinger with the better frame is nicer.

I like MR though a good bit of their non .mil packs are made overseas now and still commanding a crazy premium.... Good stuff, probably. For a few more and have US made is worth it. Pack will last forever too

Been running a Mystery Ranch 3 day assalt for 3-4 years and its been great. Bombproof, as mentioned, and plenty of room for everything you may need for a match. If i have any complaint is that it's actually almost too big for a match pack.. I may try something smaller this year so I don't carry so much unneeded junk.

I love the Arc'teryx LEAF Assault packs. My wife and I use the 30's, but one could always move up to the 45 if they wanted a bit more space. I love the design of the pockets, the modularity and ability to completely open up the pack, or partially open the main compartment from any angle.

They are pricey, but tactical distributors does put them on sale from time to time.

It has that flexible frame so I think the 22mag might be a good option, thanks, I didn’t think of that

I really like and use a lot of arcteryx stuff...I haven’t looked too close at the LEAF line, thanks I’ll check them out

5.11 makes great products. clothes and packs. packs have plenty of room and pockets. prices seem reasonable for the quality involved.

Agreed, The cargo pants are nice but after CCW most of the time I felt they made me look like I had my CCW....like wearing a "shoot me first" vest or fanny pack would.

I’ve had my eye on the Mystery Ranch day pack for a few weeks. Thanks for the info

Mystery ranch 2 day assault. Used it in 1 day matches and one 2 day match ,worked great. Got it on huckleberry for like 120 bucks, arrived about 4 days later . Great pack

100% agree. This 30L Arcteryx pack is legit. The ability it gives for organization within the pack is second to none. And even when packed full it carries very nicely.

I carried MR for a bit when I was issued it but dropped it quick because I didn't like the way they felt and for what the are they felt way too heavy to me. I bought an Exo Mountain Gear 5500 as a replacement. For a 24hr. bag I have a Grey Ghost Gear Throwback. It's actually multi day if you pack it right. I've strapped a sleeping system to the outside with enough room internally to carry 3-4 days of clothing and toiletries as well as some lickies and chewies.

There's a lot of concerning reviews on the MR 3 shoulder straps. Complaints of a paucity of padding and feeling "cheap" compared to older MR 3 and SATL models

I plan on opening a museum filled with nothing but backpacks that didn't really work out for me. I like to keep things simple. If you are like me, you might want to take a look at this back pack. It's very affordable and very well made. I have two of them; one for my job and one for hunting, shooting or other outdoor activities.
