DIY Scope Zero Stop

This has been done before but I haven't seen it posted here.

I have a few Leupold MK IV's and decided to put some zero stops on the elevation turrets. There are several ways of doing this and I just decided to turn some shims out of aluminum. Reading on the interwebs I see that some say you can ruin the mechanism with them. I have no plans on cranking them down when the knob makes contact with the shim. When finished this one went past zero about 1 moa but that's ok.

First I zero the load at my given distance, say 100 yards.

Next remove the knob and measure the distance from the scope tube to the top of the turret shoulder. In this example it measures .368".

Also measure to the distance from the bottom of the knob to the mark/scribe where your zero was. This measured .300" on this one.

Subtract that number from the previous one. .368" minus .300" equals .068" That is the required thickness of the shim give or take. This will not be absolute perfect but will be close enough for a zero. So I make a aluminum shim .945" OD with a .780" ID and .068" thick.

The calipers slipped and are off 5 thousandths but you get the idea.

Simply drop the shim down in the turret housing and install the knob with 0 on the indicator line.

Now you should have a stop where you can not crank your turret down any further that the zero for that particular load.

Guys currently I'm running a millet LRS and although it has locking turrets it doesn't have zero stops. I was wondering if it is possible to make one of these for the millet? Also I'm looking at upgrading in the near future to a vortex viper pst or sightron S3. I've heard the S3 has better glass than the pst(almost comparable to the NXS line of nightforce) but doesn't have zero stops. Could zero stops be made for the S3? If so it would be a no brainer which to buy!
 
I wonder were that guy went that had a run of these for sale few years+ back .
They were various thickness Laser-cut ( mylar or nylon) disks/washers just for MK4's . They were sold cheep-good price also . People bought the shit out of them & then I never heard of them again for sale .

I bought several of them (Leupold and NF) and still run them. I got the feeling that someone on the board ran him off. He was definitely cutting into manufacturer zero stop $$.

Not at all familiar with Millet or Sightron so I can not say whether it's feasible or not. Pull the knob off and see what it looks like. The shim/stop/washer (what ever you want to call it) simply takes up space so as the knob can not be screwed down any further. I have quite a few VX III's with target turrets that I will have to look at and see what will work on them.

Might just look at getting a piece of PVC or nylon stock and turning some.
 
I will see about the millet as I have it currently but I don't have a sightron. I'm debating on buying it for the better glass or a vortex viper pst for the zero stop illuminated reticle and 1moa subtensions instead of 2moa and it's FFP. Would buy the sightron though if I could utilize this D.I.Y. Zero stop.
 
Being able to turn the shims out of aluminum is fabulous. I don't have a lathe though, so I had to make due with the plumbing part. Fortunately, it works perfect, and the process is otherwise precisely the same as posted by ElGordo2. Great photos ElGordo2.
 
Tag for a great Idea, any word on the potential damaging on internal mechanics? The vortex pst zero stop is basically the same thing. So it should be fine but I have no real world experience.
 
Hey guys I'm back. I didn't buy the vortex or the sightron. I bought a brand new nightforce nxs non-zerostop 5.5-22/56 MOAR reticle. Is there any way OP can make me some of these for my new nightforce or can it even be done? Thanks guys.
 
If someone makes and sells these, it would be easier than the way I make them myself. For Leupold scopes, a copper plumbing fitting for .75 to .5 inch works perfect. Cut slices off with a hacksaw if you don't have a lathe as they are the PERFECT size to drop right in. I usually end up with a bunch as it is difficult to cut them precisely. I cut a piece off, then using a sanding belt, or file, reduce the shim down to the thickness I need. Or, I often combine them to get the right size.

I prefer being able to go a few minutes past zero so if I have to change my scope setting due to temperature changes, I still have a little room to go down. To return to zero, I simply turn the adjustment turret until it bottoms out, then go back to the zero. Usually 2 MOA or so above the lowest I can turn the turret.
 
We know these work for the MK4's but what about nightforce NXS scopes? Can this same design be used? Thanks guys.
 
I'm going to have to try this. This has always bugged me about the Leupold. My Vortex came with shims to add the zero stop.
