British 'Iron Man' flies jet suit in gridlocked Bangkok claiming it will be the 'future of travel'

A British engineer dubbed the real-life Iron Man demonstrated his flying suit over gridlocked Bangkok yesterday - claiming it will be the future of travel.

Former Royal Marne Richard Browning flew in his six-cylinder jet suit, which he controls by movings his arms, in front of crowds along the Chao Phraya River.

The inventor, from Wilshire, UK, was seen reaching speeds of 50kmph in front of skyscrapers in the Thai capital, notorious for its pollution and traffic jams.

Richard, who was attending a manufacturing event, believes suits like his will be ‘’the future of travel’’.

He said: ‘’In terms of practical applications [for the suit] there are some niche uses in terms of very precise search and rescue, special forces use to get soldiers in or out of places and potentially the police forces getting into areas very quickly.

‘’But, to be honest, our main focus is entertainment and racing and using that as a mechanism to accelerate the development of the technology.

‘’The very first motorcars were considered to be noisy, inefficient and in no way as good as horses, but look what happened with many years of evolution, so I think we’re on the same pathway. This will rapidly improve with every month that goes by.’’

Richard, the founder of Gravity Industries, said in a press release his jet suit flight was the first time it had been performed in Thailand.

He added: ‘’We believe this will be the future of travel.

Richard previously revealed that the British army was interested in using his suit, having previously ‘’given up on flying soldiers."

The footage was captured yesterday (May 14).

Not gonna be fun if PLA gets these but then again it'd be like shootin skeet

While it certainly seems quite cool and fun to watch, I'm not sure I'm ready to "iron man jet pack" my ass 20 miles to work each morning.

Yer' gonna need good face protection if you are going to be flying one of those things. If bikers are already dealing with mouthfuls of insects while traveling at moderate speed, imagine this thing. Helmets.......Unless you like the taste of flies and small birds.
Agree , a small bird or rock hitting you in the arm and making you flinch . That flinch or arm movement could cause you to crash .

Meh, There have been personal jet packs or what ever you want to call them for years, going on 60 years I believe. The issue is fuel, to make it compact 10-15 minutes of fuel (if that) is all they carry. Defying gravity takes energy. The more fuel you add, the cumbersome it becomes and the more fuel it burns. Doubling the fuel does not get you double the flight time. As weight and wind resistance goes up flight time goes down exponentially.

The link @QuickNDirty linked to is a little more plausible. But mission requirements will determine if you get to take an extra gallon of fuel, or 2 extra loaded mags. And that will depend on if you had double cheese burger or a salad for dinner last night.

There is a reason we don't have floating/flying cars now, or ever.

The future of travel?

Watching it buzz around I see people on similar trajectories splatting into walls and off each other with regularity.

A jetpack isn't all that fun when you got like only 30 seconds of flight time before you're outta nitro jet fuel.

Time for hydrogen cell technology.

Kind of what I was thinking. We have huge numbers of douchbags on the road now, imagine those same douchbags flying around in the air.

Time for hydrogen cell technology.
There is a lot of potential there for sure. But even though hydrogen is the most abundant element on earth (and universe I think) most of ours is locked up in water. And it takes energy to break that bond with oxygen. Only to reconnect the two to make the power.

You use electricity to seperate the hydrogen from the oxygen then introduce them to each other in a fuel cell. The fuel cell captures the electricy given off from the hydrogen-oxygen rebonding to make water.

Neither the seperation nor the rejoining are 100% efficienct.

Energy is a bitch that way.

Mayhaps I should have said "More efficient/advanced hydrogen cell technology".

Didn't Iron Man use one of these to power his suit with a cool blue LED behind it?

Japs were using hydrogen fuel cells

the problem was it would eat the metal on the tank out after a short while

I didn’t see or hear mention of the available duration of flight.

I am wrapping up a trip to Italy and all I can say is that these lead-paint-chip-addled Guidos can’t walk down a sidewalk or run a taxi stand to save their own lives.

Apparently the entire gene pool emigrated
To America c 1880.

The idea of Rome or Naples with jet packs has me in stitches. Same applies to Paris.

And when the Germans get them, they will all set them on Lebensraum and that will be that for Warsaw.

Jet packs... can you imagine the carnage? It would be hilarious! Someone should do a computer simulation...

Cheers, Sirhr

I would like one that worked not this and that was just a powder or something not jet fuel . Yes i would not like a bomb strapped to my back.

Cheap drones have very good thrust vectoring capability and stability now. Arm mounted jets are cool but maybe
some kind of waist mounted jet system would free up the arms to do work other than steering .

"Future of Travel". Last time I heard that it ended up being the Segway.

A hydrogen fuel cell generates electricity. If it generates a significant amount of power it is large, cumbersome, heavy and generate a tremendous amount of heat. Hydrogen as fuel for either internal combustion, a turbo jet or rocket has it's own problems. Storing enough to be useful takes a very large high pressure tank if stored as a gas, or as a liquid a lot of energy intensive refrigeration at -423 Fahrenheit. Yeah, the Germans have been experimenting with hydrogen for buses and commercial fleet vehicles which can all go to a common fueling center. Imagine what it would cost to convert all the gas stations to hydrogen. Imagine some halfwit trying to fuel up their car with a high pressure highly flammable gas. You REALLY wouldn't want to smoke around leaking hydrogen.

My view on the jetpack is I'd always want stout overhead cover.

im annoyed with what they called a hoverboard more like segway without handlebars

this is what it should have been

I was expecting a real iron man suit.

That's just a damn jet pack. You can buy one now if you want, they're just really expensive and don't stay up long. IIRC, they're using a non-combustible fuel now but I forget what it is offhand.

"Future of travel" my ass. On the other hand, I bet it'd speed Darwin the fuck up here in the good ol US.
