Edit: In the context of not voting in the recent elections, this was his reasoning for not voting in the last 8 years. I should add that this guy is a pastor of sorts so this blew my mind.

    What @Veer_G said.
With that, are you trying to say it is your job to determine morality of others?

I'm reading it as someone saying voting = appointing a master.

Who ever came up with it couldn't get from A to C if you spotted the B. IMHO.

There’s so much wrong with that statement I don’t know where to start

But even looking at it as “choosing a master”......I would rather choose my own “master”, than have someone else choose one for me....

People will look for any fucking excuse not to vote

If that’s his excuse for not voting, it’s just a cop out so that he can be lazy and complain no matter what the results. Like it or not, he is a citizen of the United States (assumption) and as a citizen it is his duty to vote and to serve as a juror when needed. It’s not a lot to ask of a “free” citizen.

To quote Rush (the band), “If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.”

    He’s just abdicating his responsibility.

Yes it was his excuse for not voting. Strong believer in freedom of will and choice but this is so short sighted.... This is akin to standing by and watching the Nazis take power, or whomever throughout history. It has been learned many many times painfully throughout the last 100 years that to NOT stand against evil IS to support that evil.

There is a nice little allegory about that same idea in Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged.

Guard at the building is standing in the way of the door.
Heroine pointing a gun at him tells him to make up his mind either get out of the way or try to stop them.
The idiot didn't want to have to make a decision between 2 equally bad options but wanted somebody above him to decide for him so he couldn't be blamed either way.

So the Heroine blows him away without a thought as a useless waste of flesh with no mind.

Well, if he truly is a pastor, then he has already appointed a master over himself and preaches the same to others. This makes his statement not only stupid, lazy and short-sighted, but also hypocritical.

It depends on your ideology and the tradition of your government.
In our Constitutional Republic, as designed and executed for the first century or so, the role of government is to protect the liberty of the citizens that we already inherently possess without any government at all.

If that's your ideology and philosophy then there are no masters, and you are simply voting for whomever you believe will protect your liberty best.

The left does not operate under American philosophy or believe in our form of liberal government. They are totalitarians who want...total control over your life and your very thoughts. They do indeed want you to vote for an elite master to give you your opinion, and use force against your fellows to make you behave as they see fit, and according to a fungible morality that can change day to day.

In in a sense, if all you could vote for were democrats then he's right. However, if there is a candidate who does not seek to be your master and you don't vote for that person, you are willingly accepting slavery.

Here is further explanation of the justification...

Option 1: Vote for more evil
Option 2: Vote for lesser evil
Option 3: Don't vote for evil

If you believe your current options are all evil, isn't it your duty to run for office yourself? I'm hoping for a resurgence of the Tea Party here.

The Tea Party was a failed half-hearted movement where they said one thing to get in office and did another once they arrived into the swamp of Capital Hill. I hope the other side's measures of voting into office die hard admitted socialists will be the same, but the coddled young and the older lazy electorate wanting something for nothing will only spur their fervor. It's the fabled grasshopper and hare casting the votes on their side, and they're winning.

The real solution is the end of the present day big government supporting GOP that has been overly hijacked by special interest big business and ultra social conservatives who love big government that ignores the basis of our country, instead the creation of a party that goes towards Originalist mindset where everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed or fail, the choice being upon them on their own. It's a lofty idea, of course, and will only come after a very ugly period of outright fighting and depression to reset at the bottom of the cycle. Fingers crossed...

On the actual OP's topic, willfully not voting for your beliefs is being an actual cuck, get ready for the snowball and don't forget to say "Thank you, master, may I have another."

Let's be real here. At a local level voting matters to some extent, but since the fed exerted total dominance over the states (Civil War), the federal elections haven't really mattered. The whole idea behind America is a Republic, not a Democracy. Republics protect the minority, Democracies do not. To sum it up, I'll say the quote that impacted me the most in my life with regard to politics..."If voting really mattered, they'd make it illegal".

Basically, it doesn't matter if the pile of shit is in a blue bag or a red bag, it's still a pile of shit. I choose not to vote because I don't want to participate in a system I don't believe in. I think George Carlin described it best.

“I don't vote. Two reasons. First of all it's meaningless; this country was bought and sold a long time ago. The shit they shovel around every 4 years *pfff* doesn't mean a fucking thing. Secondly, I believe if you vote, you have no right to complain. People like to twist that around – they say, 'If you don't vote, you have no right to complain', but where's the logic in that? If you vote and you elect dishonest, incompetent people into office who screw everything up, you are responsible for what they have done. You caused the problem; you voted them in; you have no right to complain. I, on the other hand, who did not vote, who in fact did not even leave the house on election day, am in no way responsible for what these people have done and have every right to complain about the mess you created that I had nothing to do with.”

You don't fix a termite infected house by replacing some rotten wood with other (less?) rotten wood. You burn the house down and build a new one.

So then you become the one with higher aspirations and want to be the Master and others will deem you evil for doing so? Sounding like a revolving door to me, but I usually leave these things alone.

They are glad you don't vote...
Whether I agree with you or not you have a set of beliefs that you'll stand by, kryptonite to the power hungry politicians.
As Rome wasn't built in a day fixing our current cluster will not be righted in one election.

stop trying to justify being a lazy piece of shit.

basically what youre telling me is you are too much of a pussy to make and stand behind a decision....you just want to bitch and moan about your situation while doing nothing to change it

I agree they may be glad I don't vote; that still has no influence on my decision not to. I'd argue it won't be righted in any election given the myriad we have had since the problem began, and yet it still continues to this day.

As to the lazy piece of shit comment, I find that hilarious. It made me giggle a bit :ROFLMAO:(y)

I'd like to also point out that your first response is to talk shit over the internet. I didn't insult you or attack you personally, I just gave an opinion you don't like (the problem with America in one post). Where I'm from guys like you get fed their teeth wholesale. I'd love to accommodate you if you ever make it to Alaska.

More insults over a computer. You're cute.

Any time you end up up here or change your mind I'll be around. I'll also be in Denver mid/late December if that's geographically better for you. We could even have some Hide members attend and post the video on the forum.

Actually, we've got fairly well hinged people who might just show up anyway with enough provocation. I'm putting that out there as something to think about for the new guy.

Some of the excuses to not vote are laughable. The excuses and uneducated use of philosophy of logic. Let’s please remember comedian logic is not even close to real logic (take a philisophy class in logic and reason). Let’s say everyone took the pastors position of not voting. What do you have with regards to government? nothing everything comes to a halt. No elected leaders then no government at any level including law enforcement and emergency services eventually fade away. I think the gentleman that’s described our duties as citizens had it right you only have two vote and serve on a jury. I have done both and consider neither a inconvenience for opportunity I have in the United States of America. To those that say our country sucks no one is keeping you here and the state department has a list of countries you shouldn’t visit that’s where you should go they will welcome you will open arms.

I've never even received a jury notice. I think they know my username here, and they know I'd send someone to the gallows for looking at a kid sideways and vote to acquit on any gun related charges based on unconstitutionality.
