It’s that time of year again, when dogs and veterans bark all night

With Colonial Trader Day approaching I’m curious what works BEST to keep my dog calm on the 4th (and leading up as well as a few days after)

I think she’s a veteran because fireworks get her all loud like she’s going to kick some ass but all she does is annoy me with her “Home me back bro” barks.

so besides Benadryl and Whisky what works for K9 friends? These youths are setting off fireworks in the daylight.

Trazadone, I had it prescribed for my dog.

I have one dog that will literally bum rush and take anything burning or sparkling out of your hands and one that is out of fucking town at the first firecracker that goes off 🤣🤣

I'm thinking about turning my Malinois loose at the first sound of fireworks. I want to see how fast my neighbors can run. My money is on my Mal. He hates fireworks and those firing them off as an enemy. His prime drives are prey and food so if you're disturbing his environment you are instantly both.

My #120 lb girl went through "a phase" I gave her 5HTP - with great success...my vet freaked that I could have killed her yada yada..

Can't wait for all the Karen's to start crying on Facebook about how her dog "Maddy" is scared to death ("literally shaking") once it starts to go down in the hood...wife shows me the Facebook posts lol...pure gold.

Whole town sounds like a war zone and gets so smokey you need to drive with fog lights on...

Smells like freedom :)

This behavior from dogs makes we wonder about dogs in combat. I assume they must be trained for it. Makes me wonder why more owners don't.

Even gun dog breeds can tend toward gun shyness if not acclimated to gun fire. Start them early and condition them that gunfire means something exciting- like getting to retrieve- and they can overcome a natural aversion to loud noises. And, remember that dog ears are substantially more sensitive to loud noises than human ears. There are companies that are making dog specific hearing protection... But, yes, you must train gun-shyness out of most dogs.

My bird dogs used to head to gunfire, etc. They expected a bird on the ground!

Kitty also doesn’t like the big booms.
My area usually sounds like the invasion on Baghdad for the week up the the fourth.
It’s been surprisingly quiet this year.
Did the FBI buy all the fun stuff for a white supremacy operation?

My wife gave one of dogs doggie cbd gummies and didn't tell me. Yelled out in a panic when the dog couldn't walk up the stairs. Quick trip to the emergency vet (9 at night). They take the dog back for evaluation. Vet comes out asking about cannabis in the house...

What size dog? If 40-50+ pounds you can do 50mg benadryl without issue.

My labrador ran in the house and my thunder scared dashaund stayed outside tonight go figure.

Our golden wants to chase them.

My wife's border collie does not.

Call you vet tell them your need meds to calm him down during the fireworks. My wife was a tech for years, her dog gets Trazadone if I remember correctly. There are others also. I'll ask her when she wakes up.

that’s a great looking dog in your avatar.

I have one dogs that is ok as long as we keep him with us, and stay inside. The other dog runs around looking the for the birds he thinks must be falling. He probably thinks the 4th is a cursed day when no one can shoot.

So last night I gave ol Doggerson the Benadryl and beef jerky treat. Put her in her crate, in deep interior room with a fan to try and drown out the sounds of freedom.

she seemed to have a good nights rest.

called the vet, got some line about how we need an exams because new rules and there are no appts for the next 3 weeks.

no problem.

appreciate all the help fellows.

acepromazine, (spelling?)

Also, be mindful of how you respond to your dog's anxiety. Often we create or promote the anxiety in dogs by treating them like humans, coddling and trying to calm them. All that does is make things worse for the dog, we are telling him that his fears are justified and to continue them. Not only that, but we will reward you for your anxiety.

How good can she shoot?
