20# rifle gaming tricks, or have I completely missed some Jedi trick for stable shooting from a kneeling position?

Considering there's at least 12" of snow on the ground, with more planned, I'm not sure that position will work. This year's match is going to be interesting, for sure. Note to self: cold weather gear and sunglassses will be required.

I saw that pic on Instagram also, guess I'll have to try it out. If it works it works

Don’t try that with a heavy recoiling gun,

I can’t imagine that is not very stable, but maybe it is

How is that more stable than a traditional sling kneeling?

I think a bigger concern is the head/eye position, it’s gotta be easy to can’t the rifle that way

Gamer yoga. It's been around a while. You should see the "standing" position.

Most matches around here will say "No" and force you back into traditional positions, but if the MD is cool and you have practiced it (and are flexible enough) it's pretty darn stable. Don't try it for the first time at a match though.

@Supersubes I’m sorry sir, but we are talking about kneeling, your pictures are obviously about alternative prone positions ( I think? ) haha.

Ya you’re right, I thought the old school wacky prone would compliment the wacky kneeling in the pic.

Blanchard can do this all the way to sitting...he used it in my squad in like 2016 in New mexico

for the sitting he would move is foot from under him and sit on his butt, then rest the rifle on the top of his boot/pants and grab it to keep it from sliding

IF you can get into the position its actually very stable...my torso is slightly too long for me to do it, i can get into the position, but then i cant breathe lol

You must not be very serious. Impacts > Everything.
    ?

Not knock it you should, until tried it you have...

    That picture hurts my knees...

I wish I was a Gummby! Man, I'm not flexible at all.

I remember the Phoenix club thwarted Ryan Kurr (he'd always win that sitting stage), by putting a string across and the rule was you had to have your barrel above the string. Before, Ryan was able to rest his barrel on his foot or leg in sitting position kinda like Dtros is doing in kneeling.

Those guys belong on the America's got talent stage, lol.

I have this airgun bummbag that is excellent to sit on. One time I used it and did well but next time the MD's made a rule that you couldn't sit on anything, I didn't hear that in the stage description. I get to shooting and someone was kicking my bummbag out from under me, lol, I'm like WTF are you doing??!! Good times!

There are all sort of ways to do this,

This is the old Jim Clark version, Wade Stuteville used to do it. With the rifles getting heavy and technique being poor for most, its the easiest way to balance the rifle

I have seen several variations on this, bipods off the foot, all sorts of stuff.

Lack of training leads to innovation or bastardization of the positions

If I was to get in that position, highly doubt it but I would have to go to the hospital and multiple surgeries would be in my future

I’ve tried it, it’s a seems to be a pretty interesting position with potential. From my experience most positional shooting is at 3 minute targets inside 600y. Also, this is why this old guy does yoga.

Dang don't know how I missed this. Im famous.

    Couple thoughts...
-lots of match directors get around this by saying "no yoga positions" or "barrel has to be above knee." I practice both and am completely fine with both.
-100% more solid than sling traditional and 100% faster trasnsition positions...esp in cold weather!
-if it wasn't so cold and so many layers, I usually have butt inside elbow - no worries on recoil
-def practice before trying in a match. target acquisition through scope is 200% harder than any other position
-transition, as mentioned, to sitting is super fast
-rifle is almost 5 lbs under 20#...man the haters are getting redic! lol

-MOST IMPORTANT - I cleaned that stage. suck it trebec.

    haha

eta - contrary to popular haters...if you suck at positional, this isn't a fix. its a tool. and much harder to use, not only for flexibility reasons but several others you will find out during shooting. GL.

Now THAT is an interesting quote!

On the one hand you're a brilliant innovator in the realm of positional shooting who is widening all our horizions. On the other hand you're an untrained moron who's doing it wrong!

    Totally agree.
The only reason we have precision rifles to shoot is because some moron shoved a ball in a tube who gun powder. It's all innovation/evolution to some degree! I would definitely use that position if my manly bits would allow it.

Great feedback. I guess it's all about perspective and what your goals are. On one hand it's very hard to argue with a position that gets you your hits within the context of a competition. On the other hand, I wonder if this is a position that is applicable in a "real world" setting? Obviously it's all recreation unless you carry a gun for a living. But for example, I try to only practice positions that I could realistically use in a hunting situation. I haven't scraped up the money to start shooting in matches yet, but if/when I do the ultimate goal would be getting more time reinforcing fundamentals to make me more proficient marksman in the field hunting.

So with that context in mind I am genuinely curious: I don't know if you are a hunter or not, but if you were... is this a position you could see yourself using?

Your goals will change when you shoot your first match. It’s as fun or more fun than hunting. You know that giddy laugh when big wads of ducks start dropping in and you’re blowing their bills off and everyone is grinning from ear to ear....yea, that. Or, when you get that big buck in your scope, you pull the trigger and he drops DRT...yea, that’s the feeling of cleaning a hard stage. Those dings quickly become beautiful music, and from stage to stage it’s you against yourself shooting with a bunch of good dudes. I think most hunters will love it from hello.
