Alright everyone I know it's not exactly vintage like a 1903a4 or M1D. Not exactly a "sniper" rifle but more of a DMR rifle. Anyways I have a chance to purchase a unused PSL with optic , 6 mags with mag pouch, and cleaning kit for about $1500. Which seems like a great deal correct? I've seen the rifles alone go for about 2k with out all the extras. There is not a scratch on it not even from the safety lever. Bore is amazing! Now should I jump on that as a collector piece. I know they arent the most accurate rifle out there. Surplus is no longer importanted so it's not really a cheap shooter anymore.
Does it seem like a far deal and good buy?

I don’t know on the PSL. That said, i was in a gun store a few years ago and they had a “Pile of Aks” in the corner. i started digging in the pile, and eventually pulled out an original russian dragunov. It had no price, and the pile said “AKs $249”. I immediately took it up front to buy it.

The guy behind the counter said “Where the fuck did you get that?”. I told him. He said they had been looking on the surveillance tapes for weeks to see who had stolen their Dragunov. He then politely let me know that it could be mine for only $10k.

It was a fun experience.

Damn, that's crazy. Too good to be true...

Classic Firearms just sold a bunch of these for $3k with only one magazine and the 4x scope. Now granted it's Classic and they sell stuff for inflated prices, but I would think it would be a tough investment to lose on for you if it's a complete untouched kit. They can be fun shooters, just realize the shots start stringing when the barrel heats up.

$1500.00 doesn't sound too bad. My LGS has the same rifle (with the optic included) on the rack for $1899.00

They've also got a 1977 paratrooper model on consignment for $2,300.00

I feel like such a jack ass for not buying one of these from AIM Surplus when they had them for $699-$799....
That really wasn't that long ago. I remember a friend buying one for $800 and thinking he got ripped off.

I just bought one a couple months ago for pretty much the same price. yes, it's a good deal.

I would buy it. Though the PSL's are good for around 2moa (Depending) they are a really good rifle. I've shot both (Dragunov and PSL) and I would rather have the PSL for the price any day. One day I'll find one cheap and never let it go.

I had one with a rare? 8x scope. Paid 1000 for it. Sold it for 2000 after sandy hook. I wouldn’t buy it to “collect” but I’d buy it to use as a big game hunter that you don’t mind having in the elements. If you do get it just to collect, find some of the different com block ap rounds to put up with it.

The vepr 54 is a better shooter for accuracy. They have a heavier receiver and barrel. The 20 inch barrel vepr were more accurate than the 23 inch barrels in my experience. Vepr receiver is cut for single stack mags only though.

I don’t remember the website, but there use to be other scope mounts you could switch out that had weaver rails on top.
Low or high to still use the irons.
Easy to swap around optics if you didn’t want the original.
Could keep a thermal or Nightvision on a separate mount.

I didn’t care for the chin weld with the d740 I tried on mine years ago. Optics were a little to high for my taste.

The rifle, mags, original scope were around 900 out the door circa 2011 when I had one.
Wish it had shot better than 3moa, I might have kept it. Sold it a year later for what I had in it much to my surprise.

Yup I remember people thinking $800 was to much for them back then too lol.

Also reminds me of $100 Yugo SKSs and cheap 03s. Lots of would’ve, should’ve, could’ves for me.

I bought one back in the $8-900 days. It could be a 1.5" rifle one day and a 4" the next. Sold it two years later for $1000 and thought I made a killing.

If only I had a time machine.

I have a 23” Vepr and would like to see a good comparison between them and the PSL.

$1500 is a good deal if it’s a Cugir (PSL-54C) as they’re more desirable. I still regret letting mine go, but someone wanted to give me $2K for it about a year after I took it in trade for a $600 value and my inner hustler couldn’t say no.

Wow, I looked back on here and I figured $1500 for a PSL would be a no-go, I remember Tiger's going for that way back when... And those were real Drags with a shorter barrel.

I remember when the PSL's started showing up, some were sold AS drags. But it's really just a x54 AK. I wanna say they were $500 but don't quote me. They were sold by a liquidator with the scope and mags and some had a cleaning kit, sling and some other doo dads.

The halcyon days of $199 AK74's are over (yeah, I walked out the door with one for that plus tax in 99 or 2000). I sold my milled Arsenal SLR95 (considered to be the best AK ever built) for $500 like an idiot... It was actually a fair price back then. That rifle just FELT smooth, not janky like an AK at all. Steyr barrels. No idea what they'd go for today like that. I also sold my RPK for $400 with a drum IIRC. These rifles were a dime a dozen back then, kinda like AR's today but even cheaper.

So the price on a PSL? Fuck, I guess I couldn't tell 'ya anymore.

But I CAN tell you that if I were going to buy an AK today there are only a few I'd consider. Arsenal is one, but they ain't cheap. A modified Saiga would be another (also the ideal candidate for a PSL if you want a better one). An actual Lancaster would be tops on the list, but those were made for SAS by one guy in Britain, so good luck scoring one of those. Kalshnikov just came out with a new x51 that would be high on my list were I looking for one:

But for the prices on these, I'm not so sure I'd get one unless I just wanted it. For the price you can get a decent FAL or G3 from DSA or PTR, both of whom secured the actual plans from the mfg. Jard makes a 2 stage trigger for FAL almost as nice as the Geissele (they've stepped up their game a LOT).

The vepr made not with the same specs like dragunov . PSL made with military specs. I don't know how good vepr but my PSL shoot with surplus ammo 10 out of 10 rounds in the head size turget on 200 yds
