I just received my order from Cameraland for this scope. I was on the fence with all of the mixed reviews I have seen, but I decided to give it a shot. Cameraland included a note that says "not refundable if mounted", so I wanted to do what I could to try this out before mounting it.

It's been a while since i've owned a top tier optic such as a Kahles, but it would be an unfair comparison anyway. Because I have an XTR2 on hand, that will be my comparison.

Initial impressions, scope is a lot beefier than I thought (in a good way). It feels like a quality optic. The finish has more of that nightforce flat finish compared to the PST line or XTR2 with the shiny black coating.

Turret feel- I like turrets that require effort to move them. These are perfect for my taste. Without looking at the scope, I can adjust 1 tenth up or down and know/feel that I only did 1 tenth adjustment. In comparison to my 4-20 XTR2, it takes a conscious effort to only move the turret 1 tenth without looking. I generally end up moving 2 tenths. No mushiness in the turret as some others have reported.

Controls- the controls have a good amount of friction to them. The magnification ring is just tight enough for my taste. I don't see myself needing a throw lever for this. I will update if that changes once it's mounted and in the field.

Glass- here we go. Initially, I looked through it and thought "yeah it's nice". Then I grabbed the XTR2 and compared side-by-side. Looking at trees anywhere from 100-430 yards away the biggest difference between them was brightness and definition. The Steiner is much better in these two aspects. On low power, you don't see quite as much of a difference, but with both optics on 16x, it's a huge difference. The XTR2 shows it's cloudy and dark glass whereas the Steiner does not drop off in performance from 4 to 16x. I would say it's definitely a step up in optical performance.

Eyebox- hands down the Steiner wins. Both are about the same in maintaining a good sight picture on lower powers. Once you get into 12x and higher, the XTR2 becomes finicky to maintain a good sight picture. Granted I am holding these optics instead of them being mounted, but that just means the Steiner would be even easier to stay behind than the XTR2.

FOV- Steiner wins. I had a NF SHV F1, and my biggest issue with that scope was the small FOV. Personally it felt like I was looking through a toilet paper tube. I preferred the XTR2 over the SHV F1 because of this alone even though the glass quality was much better than the XTR2. The FOV on the Steiner is even better than the XTR2. This was a weighted decision for me which is why I compared specs on FOV listed by each manufacturer prior to purchasing. Turns out they were right because the Steiner had the highest FOV on 4x when compared to the NF SHV F1, XTR2 and the Toric 30mm (lowest FOV).

Conclusion: I feel confident enough that I can now mount this scope without worrying about having to get my money back. For $800, this is a steal (unless it doesn't track lol). The box was sealed with Steiner tape that said certified and inspected. So let's hope that's true.

I will update once it's zeroed and some field use.

Great review, after buying two of these myself from the guys at cameraland, I too feel like it’s a steal. Initially was worried also after reading some of the issues the EARLIER scopes had.

Today ironically enough I compared mine side by side to an xtr 2, and also an older nightforce nxs 5-22x56. Multiple shooters at the range today all looked through each, and we all favored the glass in the Steiner.

My turrets seemed to track true out to 935, and match my StrelokPro calculations after chronographing loads on the magnetospeed.

I was really surprised at the clarity, and how little magnification was really needed to make solid hits. Furthest hits were 935 on a 24 inch (I think) piece of steel. Also made solid consistent hits on a known 8 inch plate at 800 yards. These hits were made at only 12 power, as down here in south Louisiana, anything much higher than that and the mirage gets you.

Also to give guys an idea, I mounting this on a 700 SA with a zero MOA base, and after zeroing still have 15.5 mills of elevation. I am shooting a 168 grain hornady eld m, and only needed 9.7 mills to get to 1,000.

The FOV on this scope is great!

Edited to add, on the bolt gun it’s sitting in nightforce ultralight mediums, and on the gasser an adm recon qd mount.

How does your parallax turret feel? When I was playing with the scope before mounting, I didn't feel anything moving around. After mounting the scope, I can hear like a springy noise when going through the parallax range. It's always in the same area. The parallax works, it just seems odd to me. I checked my rings and I only torqued them down to 15inch pounds. The feel in the turret feels the same as it did before mounting it.

Just curious on your experience with it.

No issues with either adjusting parallax. The friction is consistent on both, and adjusts fine. No noise no sticking, nothing. I have heard some say that theirs had stopped working, but mine are fine. I have my rings torqued to 25 inch pounds I believe? Whatever nightforce recommends.

I don't trust my wheeler torque wrench, so I go conservative on the number. It always seems like it's over-tightening, but I could be paranoid. I've never had my optic loose zero at that setting. It's a very faint noise. The resistance is pretty much all the same except for the very last part near the infinity setting then it slightly increases in resistance. It adjusts parallax every time, so until it doesn't adjust, I won't worry about it.

Update:

I was able to take my 224V out to the field today and do a little more evaluation on the scope.

Glass- the optical clarity was good. Much much better than the XTR2 without even having to look through them side-by-side. Looking at terrain features off in the distance I can still see details in the terrain, logs, stumps, and etc no problem. Mirage was visible but not distorting the image even on full 16x.

One thing I did notice was I used the SH advanced marksmanship target to zero the scope at 100 yards. I did notice some CA looking at that target around the black dots. I had another target to the right with white dots and no CA visible to me there. On 16x I could see my 224v holes no problem, I could read half inch sized letters at 100 yards no problem. The CA visible on the SH target at 100 was the only time it really stuck out to me that it existed. If it was there while glassing around the terrain at varying distances, I couldn't detect it.

I wanted to perform a tracking test, but I forgot my tall target at home along with my wallet and sunglasses. Figures. When I was zeroing the scope, I would measure a previous impact with the reticle and make the adjustment. It seemed to line up, but that's not enough travel nor is that an accurate enough test to see if it was off a tenth or not.

The bad:

Someone please tell me if I am doing this wrong, but after re-zeroing the turrets to set my 100 yard zero my lines on the turret and scope body do not consistently match up. I lined up the turret with my 0 dead on the line and evenly tightened both screws transitioning between the two incrementally tightening them. It is dead nuts on and then is off a little, back on track, and then off at the top of the elevation.

I have 15.3 mils of travel left after zeroing with 0 moa base and 0 moa rings on AR15 224V 88gr factory ammo. By the time it reaches 15 mils, the line on the scope body is halfway between the lines on the turret. This was consistently repeatable. I tried multiple times loosening and tightening the screws. I will link a video.

Great review. I have one and it is a really tough elevation turret, really easy perillax and a perfect windage. I was on the fence about returning it, but after I was just sitting on the couch and worked it back and forth a bunch the elevation loosened up enough to decide to keep it. I put it on a 6.5 PRC and used the 147 Hornady ELD match factory ammo. punched the speed from the box and dialed up to a 400 yard recommendation from Strelok and center punched the 3" bullseye. I dialed it up to a 828 yard 8" target (again using Strelok) and the first two shots were on the bottom right corner of the target about an inch from one another. I dialed one click up and one to the left and let my buddy shoot and he missed his first 2, then shot the 12" target that was next to it and realized he needed to adjust the perillax(it was still set for the 400 yard target). Once it was adjusted he hit the 8" twice in a row. In between the two of us shooting I did dial back to zero and back up. It dials up a little stiff, but the real issue was when I was dialing back down... I can deal with it, but it is stiff. When I got my P4XI, I ordered one for my Brother-IN-Law and his is perfect.
I had just been shooting my 300 WSM (and so did my buddy) with a 3-15 Burris XTR2 and this was a pretty noticeable step up in glass quality. I had been thinking about getting another 3-15 XTR2 for another long range hunting rifle, but the Steiner P4Xi 4-16 is just a better scope for hunting with the bigger objective lens. I just hope the turrets are more like my Brother-in-law's and less like mine. Even considering the flaws, I like It a lot!

Thank you. I am still in the process of evaluating this scope. I have a lot of work left to do with it yet before I can say "buy it over scope x". As of right now, I do believe it's a great value, but some testing still remains.

Turret update:

I played around with turrets again trying to see if I can get all the lines to line up perfectly. I have improved it, but it has taken some time. It's like this turret has a very specific sweet spot to tighten it down. I tried different tightness levels on the allen screws, compensating left or right of the 0 line with scope body line, and ultimately I feel like i've reached a point that it's good enough. Once it hits the last mil of elevation travel it's still a little bit off, but much improved compared to the video I posted.

It's just odd because I have never struggled so much to get a turret to line up and stay that way through the elevation travel. I had to play around a little bit with the XTR2, but not quite like this. FWIW, the windage turret didn't have this problem at all. Got it down first go after setting the zero.

As of now, I am not mad about my purchase at all. Because of the hit or miss reviews I have read about this scope, I am going through this one with a fine toothed comb vs others where I just mounted them up and zeroed. My goal is to provide as much feedback as I can for prospective buyers.

Wow looks much better, I’ll have to check my two and see if it’s the same.

My experiences are similar to Want2rides.
I feel like this is a good quality optic, however it is not as refined as some of the really high end stuff out there, IE turret feel, the glass, And CA.

My elevation turret seems to be breaking in really nicely also, more so on my bolt gun as I have used it quite a bit more ad I can now clearly feel a difference between the two I have.

I feel like this scope will last me quite a while until I “level up” my skills, and really be able to number one, tell the difference in the higher end optics, and number two be able to utilize that difference.

I plan on ordering. Third for my new APO M700 saber in 6.5 creedmoor I just picked up today!

I have owned high end optics. For what they cost, I didn’t see the value. I wasn’t shooting any better with my K624i than I was with a bushnell HDMR. I was just as capable hitting targets at 1200yds with my NF SHV as any other optic.

My whole goal has been to find an optic that provides a ton of value for the cost. Encouraging others to keep looking for the next step up in glass is great if you have deep pockets. I personally don’t. So I strive to find something that’s “affordable” in the PRS realm and you’re not leaving much to be desired from $3000 optics.

Update:

In preparation for a match this weekend, I confirmed zero and ran the 224V out to 765 yards.

Parallax- The infinity setting worked at 610 yards and further. At 485 yards I had to specifically set the parallax adjustment, but I am fine with that.

Glass- I’m still very impressed with the glass quality in this optic. It’s definitely better than my NF F1 SHV was, and not even in the same ballpark as the XTR2. I could see more clearly on 16x with the Steiner than I could see anything on 20x with the burris.

A buddy of mine just got his 3-18 Mk5 in the other day. I was interested to compare the two. Just a quick peek through his scope from my balcony, I didn’t see any difference between that and the Steiner. If anything, I preferred the Steiner because the FOV was noticeably better even with his Mk5 on 3.6x. It will be interesting to see how they compare side by side at distance.

Turrets- I did need to make a zero adjustment because I was rushed last time I zeroed. I was nervous to play with the turrets again because my zero actually needed to come down 2 tenths. I got it right first try. No issues with the lines not aligned properly. The scope seemed to track true based on my previous data in applied ballistics. Max distance was 765 yards today.

I am really digging this scope. I’ve been searching for a scope that provides a ton of value for the price, and I believe this is the one.

I will report back after the match this Saturday to see how it holds up.

I look forward to hearing back from you, Haven't shot a match with mine yet, but hoping to. Your review here has been invaluable, and I have shown several people this optic and they all love it. Just seems like the ultimate piece of glass you can buy that will not only get you started in this type of sport, but last a while, and you can grow, as well as develop your skills with it.

I was thinking of going a little bigger with the T5xi 5-25, but its more than twice as much, and im so satisfied with these, i may as well just get another! Idk, decisions....decisions....

I am not sure the T5 series is worth the extra price. When I had my K624i, I rarely used it above 18x. It would be nice to have the 18x vs 16x, but I could see the 7”x12” ipsc target at 765 on 16x no problem.

If I had the cash, I would pick up another P4Xi for my 308 bolt gun.

At the price Doug selling this for at the moment, and if you are good with the SCR reticle, I can't think of another scope currently on the market that offers better performance on 16x or better low light performance.

It is not an ideal scope for everyone, but if you are not a magnification hog and you want a precision oriented scope for $800, this is the best you are going to find right now.

I just got back from the match today. The scope did everything I needed it to do. The shooter behind the gun was the problem today. I got my butt handed to me today, but it taught me a lot about wind that I never had to deal with before.

Highlights:

The image quality was good all day long. Even when mirage was really heavy, I could still get hits and see my targets, see splash, and etc.

Parallax- I didn't touch my parallax at all today. Targets ranged from 389-812 yards. I never had to adjust my parallax once. I just left it on infinity.

Turrets tracked and returned to zero.

I do not regret this purchase at all. At this point, I don't have a reason to believe this scope will do me wrong.

I just bought my 3rd one from Doug and Joel over at Cameraland . Planning on at least one more in the coming month or two.

Like Mr. Koshkin has said, if you can live with just the 16x top end they are excellent. The more I use mine the more I feel like the FOV is exceptional, and it really just is an easy scope to get behind, eye box seems pretty forgiving, and my turrets have broken in very very nicely

Been impressed with mine so far, beauty glass, adjustments are bang on. Turret is a wee bit stiff, but no way to accidentally move it.

Very satisfied so far.

I wouldn’t mind picking up another one for a 16” 308 gas gun that I want as a hunting rig.

If increase the budget up to $1200, what would you recommed?

If you are comfortable with overall size and magnification range, P4Xi is still the way to go.

At $1200, there still aren't that many options. Ares ETR 4.5-30x56 is one of the few and the choice there comes down to what is more important for you: low light or magnification range.

P4Xi becomes a harder sell once you get to $1500 and up where there is Delta Stryker, upcoming Burris XTR III, Vortex Razor Gen 2 and a few others.

Eh I would have to disagree. The razor is a brick, and I’ve been comparing the steiner to my buddies new 18x Mk5 while we shoot. After looking through his, I much prefer the steiner. Mainly because of FOV is night and day better on the steiner. I don’t see the steiner giving anything up to those scopes you mentioned other than top end magnification.

I should probably keep my mouth shut about this scope because they will all be sold out before I buy another one.

To be fair, the Mk5 you were looking at has a 44mm objective, so it will look quite different.Generally, being two and a half inches shorter and half a pound lighter, it is really intended for a different purpose.

I try to compare scopes with similar objective diameters, so the P4Xi despite a dissimilar mag range mostly competes against the 5-25x56 Mark 5.

Either way, I fully agree that P4Xi is an excellent scope and I am really surprised Doug still has any of them left.

Yeah, that’s a fair point. A part of me still kinda wants a Mk5 25x, but that’s only because I want one not because I feel it’s needed.

I have not tested the 5-25x Mark 5, but saw it briefly and thought it was a good design. I am now testing the 7-35 Mark 5 and like it a lot. It is really impressive how light, comparatively speaking, Leupold has managed to keep it.

The FOV of the Mark 5 is fairly average. P4Xi has a bout 5% more FOV at the same magnification, but the image looks nice and clean. There is good feel to this optic. However, it is around $2500 for the illuminated TMR version I am looking that. It is fairly affordable compared to many scopes it competes against, but P4Xi at $800 is still a raging bargain.

I talked to Doug earlier this week, and once he runs out of the batch he bought from Steiner, I am not sure we will see these for $800 any time soon.

astrookie how would you say this scope is at like early day light and at low light as in hunting?

Used mine to shoot 2 deer this year and both were at the last moment possible before dark. With the illumination barely on it perfectly lit the reticle to see to shoot. The rest of scope I could still see the deer fine just the reticle would be hard to see without illumination.

Made my purchase through cameralandny this morning. This review pushed me over the edge.

Well this is what happens when I get on this site and start reading... between aslrookie's review and what koshkin had to say about the P4Xi 4-16 (how can you refute the Dark Lord of Optics??) I jumped on a deal that @gr8fuldoug is offering on a package deal for both a P4Xi 4-16 and a P4Xi 1-4. I am not sure if we are supposed to talk prices on here or not, but the price for both of them is very good.

To make matters worse, I just ordered a Razor GenII 4.5-27 yesterday from another vendor on here as well. ? I guess the good thing is I am currently deployed so my wife has about another 6 months to get over it..? Otherwise I may be looking for an open couch somewhere in the North DFW vicinity lol.

But between these three scopes I should be set for convectional optics, will order the Pulsar Termion XP50 shortly before I return.

Razor for 7-300WM that I was just informed is finally complete
P4Xi 4-16 for an AR10 6.5 that I will put together when I get back
P4Xi 1-4 for an AR that I am going to build for my son when I get home.

I put a different stock, grip and a few other parts on my issued M4 over here and told my son that when I get back we will use those pieces that I carried over here on his AR when we build it. Now he will have a good scope to mount on it as well.

I think I may want to stop with the reading on here, it is getting expensive! And now I might as well call the wifey so she can start getting over it... ?

Good luck to you buddy. I was single when deployed to the sandbox, but I wish I wasn’t so my deployment money wasn’t wasted on building a fast car lol

The 4-16 will be perfect for the AR10.

Oh, I have one of those as well.

2017 ZL1 A10, intake, throttle body, heads, cam, headers, exhaust, 18% OD lower pulley, e85 flex sensor, low side fuel system and meth injection. Was at 755/775 wheel on 93 and over 800 whp on e85. I pulled the engine before I left and having it built by Advanced Modern Performance in DFW using Late Model Engines in Houston for the block work. S/C is being ported as well so should be a *little* above that when I get it back together.

When I say I will have a lot to do when I get home, I will have a lot to do!

And I think the 4-16 will be perfect on the AR10, thanks for a good review to decide off of.
