Absolutely, good for the homeowner protecting his...and to a speedy recovery for this man.

...and was it ever thought shotguns do not work in SD/HD?

IMO not many more effective options. Of course there are pros and cons but for sheer fk you upness with a quickness, shotguns with defense loads are tough to beat.

If I were to bet, he probably got popped when cycling in between shots...

Three less pieces of s#$! in Houston it sounds like. Hope the homeowner makes a quick recovery and faces no charges.

Shotguns work in CQB

Rifles work better.

There's a reason why almost all police forces in this country abandoned shotguns in favor of AR pattern rifles for CQB.

For the average homeowner I would disagree.

For police force it makes sense.

Nah, you're an idiot and it's a good thing the "average homeowner" doesn't give a flying fuck about what you think.

Good thing is I feel the same about yours... :)

Looks like we found common ground after all.

You know...opinions.

I just want lemonade to mix these tater squeezins with..... Will grab ya some popcorn Jimmy.

ARs are great for HD.

all of the options for armed HD take training and practice to run well, clear malfunctions, and reload.
ARs are faster. Easier to have a second mag.

a shotgun is easy if it doesnt have any failures

As for me, I will keep both. AR gets grabbed first though.

Didn't realize I duped this article in another thread.

Merging post...

Several important points to take note about this incident...

1. Shotguns are pretty fucking effective. And they remain so to this day and beyond. In the old West, many altercations, especially in enclosed structures such as saloons and corrals, have been ended by shotgun blasts.

2. Ambushes are brutally effective in dealing with unknown and hostile interlopers. ESPECIALLY when you are in terrain that you are intimately familiar with. Another good tactic is to use a 'decoy light source', located in another corner far away from your own location to illuminate the intruders and confuse their sense of awareness while you open fire on them from a dark and hidden position. Judging by the outcome of this shooting, the resident must have broken his cover to engage the intruders or otherwise had attracted their precise attention in another way. Weapon mounted lights are a good source of immediate target illumination BUT they also give your position away and gives the enemy a spot to aim at.

Excellent shooting by the armed resident and prayers for a quick recovery from his wounds.

A shotgun recoils more, it takes longer for follow up shots, and contrary to popular belief need to be aimed as carefully as rifles in this context.

A 5.56 semi auto carbine recoils less which means follow up shots are faster and can be placed more accurately. And it's typically easier to set up with proper sights and illumination. They are also shorter and handier than a HD shotgun unless you're stupid enough to pay ATF for a SBS

True stuff @308pirate.

Looking to do more to reduce flash on my AR as well as tune the buffer a bit to slow it just a tad. Will actually make me faster......

anyways, gotta take care of grown up crap. Like groceries and stuff.......

Run a two gun match at a local range where your average homeowner/fudd wants to get their feet wet running shotguns on poppers and plates. I have. I facepalmed more the Jean Luke Picard.
It won't take long to realize a shotgun requires far more "skill" to run than an AR.
Unless you live in the Biltmore House, typical ranges inside a home, mean your shotgun is a 12bore rifle.
Most off the shelf buckshot isn't well suited to inside a home. It's heavy recoiling, heavy loads.
A shotgun at 20 ft must be aimed every shot, and recovery from recoil can be an eternity if you miss.

A good home defense load should be T-#4 buck, 1ounce, light target. Much easier to handle fast.

You MUST train with a shotgun just like any other weapon, and I'd say more so.
I've seen people shoot their shotgun in competition that thought "hey, it's a shotgun, can't miss".
It's ugly....real ugly.

My GOD, run what you have. I have both. Who gives a shooting *%%^#% what I decide to protect my ass with. In this case the SG came out with a win.

On to a new thread.

That's only true for the untrained in their use.

I always recommend the use of light/laser units that have finger activated remote pressure switches that can be operated by the supporting hand. With these setups, one can activate the device for precise aim and almost immediate weapon engagement as soon as he gets a good bearing of where the threat is located.

Dam...
Everyone seems to be missing something here.
1. CNN covered this story of a responsible homeowner defending himself..( and we all know how many times they do that)
2. Would this even get picked up by the media if the homeowner used a Ar type rifle to defend himself?

Weapon lights can be useful for home defense because you may want to briefly make sure it's an actual "Intruder" you are pulling the trigger on.... And yes that happens a bit too often....

Ive been duck hunting since i was 12 so a shot gun feels all most to comfortable. Non the less i think 20 gauge is better. I would chose T shot steel pellets for home defense. More pellets less weight and at 3 to 5 yards it will leave a single hole in a duck (my dog was disgusted at those birds).

Makes me optimistic for the future of America that he killed all three! Bravo!
