Hello all. I wanted to post on hangfires (failure to fire or delay in round going off) I saw 2 of these on a 50 caliber rifle last weekend at the shoot I was at. The first was a delay that lasted long enough for the shooter to get up off the gun but before he grabbed at the bolt the round went off. the second was a no fire untill he went to move the bolt. as soon as the handle was moved to lift it the round went off.
The gun was a bullpup style where the round is inserted into the bolt and then the bolt put into the gun. It was not a grizzly but a similar type bolt arangement. This can happen in any firearm but I personally have seen it several times in 50 cals using older surplus ammo. my first 50 was one of the "buttstuffer" varietys and I had this happen a few times but in my case it was because of the pin adjustment backing up. The shooter in this case had no idea about the proper procedure when this happens. He/we were very lucky.
For future reference, when a hangfire occurs. First wait for one minute while holding the weapon downrange. If it does not eventually fire get off the gun and while keeping it pointed downrange position your body to the side of the weapon. Then grab the bolt handle from the front side of the gun, reason being if the round goes off when the bolt is opened the bolt can shoot out of the gun backwards. You need to make sure no one is behind the gun and your hand is not on the back side of the bolt handle for this reason.
All the 50 cal shoots I have been to in the last few years actually make this announcement in the shooters meeting. If the shooter this pastweekend had just of been a few seconds faster taking out the first hangfire the round could have gone off in his hands. He did not know to wait to open the bolt.

always a good idea to leave it sit for a bit when this stuff happens

Thanks for posting this. My buddy picked up a .50 cal bolt rifle a few weeks ago along with some older ammo. I'll pass this along as a reminder. Scary what could happen.

opening a hang fire round is bad news

I had to google how long you are supposed to wait after pulling the trigger on a 50 today and getting a click instead of bang. Bolt just wasn't all the way home so not a hang fire realy

My first hang fire destroyed the bone in my left pinky finger. A 9 mm derringer fell on the floor and discharged when I was replacing it to the holster. Had a bone graft from my wrist to repair it. Months of debilitating pain. Before that happened, I had to attend a gun safety class to get my CHL, but they didn’t cover hang fires. It was a couple of years before I could make myself get back into shooting. Went straight into CAS competition. I still don’t carry with a round chambered though.

I wish we could make that pic a sticky

On a side note, I had a couple of hangfires a couple weeks ago. Only they weren't hangfires. It was a reloading mistake. I had a batch of cases, I thought were powdered. I thought I checked them. I didn't. Sixty rounds of .223 stuffed with 60 gr. HP's. I didn't even think about it, I just assumed I didn't lock the magazine up right (AR), and pulled the charging handle back. I was a bit surprised when a case came out. The next one was a "click" too. I waited at that point.

Now, I'm taking down 60 cases

So yeah, good thread on hangfires. No matter what cartridge or firearm...WAIT!!

It's easy to forget/get jaded to the pressures/forces that are frequently seen in the firearms world, but that doesn't make the potential for harm any lower... good reminder!

Generally speaking, I'm no Safety Sally, but it really does put a damper on the fun when someone gets hurt.

Just holding one in your hand or loading a mag tells you everything.

Then you shoot it and your teeth rattle. And your ears ring because you only used good ear muffs and forgot to add good ear plugs.

Still fun to shoot.

cant believe we bumped a 9 year old thread just to post a pick of some rando on the internet
