Apparently, this use to be pretty good paint for firearms and the like but is no longer for sale that i can find. Anybody know the story on why it is no longer made? Ive read in old threads and on other platforms that it was probably the best aerosol paint. Wish i had known way back when and bought a bunch of it.

Apparently, the did quit making it. FML.

they only have the "field drab" in stock. thats all thats left.

Bruh. Ive krylon'd tons of shit. 🤣

Something to keep in mind with Aerovoe:

Don't expect to be able to hose your stuff down with it and be able to reassemble in 30 minutes like Krylon. This shit legitimately takes 5-7 days to cure, depending on your climate. Once its cured, its pretty tough.

I'll use it for barrels primarily so no worries

Sand and field drab are still in stock at big tex, they are the best colors anyways. Excellent product

I bought a bunch of that stuff from Big Tex after I bought one can and saw how good it was. Let’s just say I got trigger happy and almost every gun I owned got sprayed in some form. Still have a bunch of cans left and thankfully I ordered a bunch seeing as it’s disappearing now

With good results? How do you get it to stick? That prep work must suck…
Yea, it's all in the prep. Then about 7-10 coats of flat clear. That normally helps.

Bummer since the #1076 is pretty much right on for FDE rifle accessories.
FYI, my Google search had it for sale at Walmart.com so I ordered 2 cans.
They sent me 2 cans of Hunter's Specialties Mud Brown instead. Sent it back for a refund.

Big tex states that Aervoe is ending the product line. Only a few colors remain as you guys have seen. Walmart blows and 100% sends the wrong shit, everytime.

If somone really wanted to know whats up they could pick up the phone and call Aerovoe direct or send an email if you're shy.

Wolfie, do ya have any military surplus stores close by? They usually have a decent amount…

Was looking for strictly aerosol lines.

Ended up ordering 4 cans of the Field Drap Aerovoe that @lowlight posted for me. Was hoping to get an array of colors but no dice.

Jam industrial is a really decent place to do business.
They are local for me and have bought tons of stuff from them without thinking about it.

As for getting A replacement paint that is easy.
Sherwin Williams has a whole world of Mil paints.
They will custom mix what you want whether something from the catalog or something their camera system can antilize.
It's awesome to walk out with 4 aerosol cans of paint for almost what off the shelf paint would cost you.
The only problem is you have to buy 4 cans because thats the least amount of paint they can mix and install in a spray can.

It was on sale when I ordered mine a few weeks ago, and Big Tex has 10-15% off coupons available.
I order 20 cans of each color when they still had 3 colors available. Right at $4/ can shipped

That’s totally awesome! How much toilet paper did you buy at the start of the plandemic?

I have a local auto paint distributor that can load paints in aerosol cans, even catalyzed paints. Same time limit applies but that does allow spraying any compatible paints even without a sprayer. I haven't done it for years as I have spray guns now but that is an option. I did a bicycle as a kid that way with Imron paint which was cutting edge at the time - it's been a minute.

I've had good luck using Duracoat for my finishing jobs. lots of different options, can color match specific hard to find stuff, and there is a line of specialty additives for heat resistance, extra abrasion resistance, etc.

Just got done using it to help a shooting buddy refinish a Transferable Carl Gustaf m/45D in the correct colors :giggle: (previous owner hadn't gotten the tube correctly parkerized prior to painting, so it was chipping and a random olive drab color)

Doesn’t matter what you use for color. Most expensive paint you can find or the cheapest. Buy whatever color your happy with.
It’s the clearcoat that determines the strength/longevity of the finish.

What’s the clear coat of choice for these spray paint jobs?

There are a lot of different finishes out there. The nice thing is that more and more options are becoming available.
From quite expensive PPG, HOC etc down to very cheap.
I’ve had good results with Krylon Colormaxx Flat Crystal Clear.
But I also don’t beat the crap out of my bolt guns.
    YMMV

It depends on the finish whether or not a clear is necessary or best. When a clear is "flattened" it clouds the finish. The more coats of clear the less of what is below you see. When I spray a flattened finish, only the last one or two coats get the lower sheen or you lose the depth of finish and color below it.

Base/clear (like high end auto finish) is absolutely about the clear. The base is color only, finish and durability is all about the clear and number of coats.

The clear coat comment doesn't necessarily apply to all paints. Automotive paint sure, because it's designed with that clear coat in mind.

many epoxy-based paints such as the duracoat or the brownells aluma-hyde are designed as a single coat application with a curing time, as they aren't just a color coat but a hard wearing epoxy shell

Last clear I used on a spray painted gun absolutely gave me the cloudy finish

The Krylon Colormaxx Flat Crystal Clear does not leave a cloudy finish.
I put 6 heavy coats on this AR and the color was exactly the same as before the clear.
Warm the can in a bowl of hot water for several minutes. Be sure to keep it shook between coats. Re-warm can if necessary.
If it’s not atomized properly, it will cloud. Make sure whatever your spraying is also warm and low humidity.

I’d be happy with those results on a clear coat. Looks matte to me

No shit? Is this any Sherwin Williams store?
Sorry for not replying sooner but I've been sick.

    Sherwin Williams Automotive paint.

Look locally for Automotive paint suppliers, most used to provide this service back in the day.
Problem is the EPA, a lot of larger paint shops do their paint matching/mixing in house.
Most paints now a days are all water based.
