Rifle Scopes Vortex Viper zeroed with no windage left?

Forgive me if I ramble on...I'm new at this! Also let me know if I need to clarify more.

I bought a Vortex Viper 6.5x20x50 a while back and just recently mounted it on my rifle with a P.E.P.R mount. I then took it to a local gun shop to have it sighted in...when the gunsmith sighted it in he only had to adjust the elevation and I was good to go.
I then headed to the range where I discoved it was dead on at 100 yds but also noticed that it was zeroed with the windage knob dialed all the way to the left.

I tried turning the knob all the way to the right and counting clicks back to find the middle of the dial. It was way off zero.

So I headed to a different place to have it bore sighted again. I took the scope out of the mount and the mount off the gun to allow a professional to mount. This did no good... when he bore sighted it, he saw that when he ran the dial all the way out , at about 80% of the way through the clicks the crosshair was off the chart and I still had about a full turn and a half of clicks left.

So my question is there something I am missing or should I just send it back to Vortex for a look at the scope?

Re: Vortex Viper zeroed with no windage left?

It could be the scope... but have you ever had another scope mounted on this rifle? -- it could be that your scope base is off-center or something of that nature.

Re: Vortex Viper zeroed with no windage left?

No it's the only scope but we looked at the mount and base, it looks good and we leveled it.

Re: Vortex Viper zeroed with no windage left?

AR-15 chambered in 6.5 grendel, Burris P.E.P.R. mount on picatinny.

Re: Vortex Viper zeroed with no windage left?

Hopefully its not the reciever. My savage bolt gun is off pretty a good bit.

Re: Vortex Viper zeroed with no windage left?

The Burris PEPR is a Chinese-made mount, it is definitely a viable suspect with your issues....I experienced a similar problem with a Lupy scope on a Pic mount, the mount and/or receiver were not trued up. We tested the scope on other rifles and it was reasonably close to center.

Good luck.

Ok I will try it with different rings on a different rifle!

But what are the odds that the first time I put it on the rifle the windage was set exactly where it needed to be for it to be perfect at 100 yds?

Re: Vortex Viper zeroed with no windage left?

I agree, the cheap mount is likely the problem. That scope has plenty of windage adjustment and it's very unlikely anybody is making AR uppers with tops that crooked.

Re: Vortex Viper zeroed with no windage left?

If you have another rifle you can check the scope on it. Or, if you check the rifle at the range and have it zeroed like you said, start cranking the dial the opposite direction and see if it tracks true. If it tracks true as you are moving the opposite direction than it probably is not the scope and is the mount.

Re: Vortex Viper zeroed with no windage left?

it does track true but it seems to stop at a certain spot and I still have windage left.

Re: Vortex Viper zeroed with no windage left?

You could try some of Burris Sig Zee rings with the offset inserts. My Viper is zeroed and only has 16 MOA of left windage. I've got an EGW base, and I figure it is my base, or the holes in the actions are slightly off.

Re: Vortex Viper zeroed with no windage left?

If you mean the reticle stops moving (no further actual adjustment is observed) while the dial still keeps turning--what are often called "dead clicks"--it's likely there is something wrong with your scope. I just checked my 6.5-20X50 Viper and it has no dead clicks in the windage adjustment; if yours does that could be the issue.
