I've had a NIB Kimber stainless steel 10mm 1911 sitting in the vault for some time.

I was thinking about trading it off when one of the guys in the office suggested getting it customized by a local smith who's nationally recognized.

I've got way too many 1911's so I want to do something eye catching and unique to make this thing an heirloom.

If you were in my shoes and had a blank canvas to work with, what upgrades would you want?

Re: 1911 upgrades

Just my opinion here. Take it FWIW.

If I were to build an heirloom pistol it would be a complete custom build on a caspian frame and slide or a full custom Colt build. If you have a bunch of others, sell the Kimber and put the funds toward a Colt build from Heirloom Precision, Condition 1 pistolsmithing, or my local favorite - Ray Parga of Del Valle Gunsmithing.

Admittedly, I have a Springfield Loaded model that has been worked over comprehensively. I love the pistol and plan to pass it down. It is the ONLY 1911 I have. If I were to purchase another, I would save the funds for a full custom on a Colt series 70.

Re: 1911 upgrades

sell it and order an SVI single stack 1911.

Honestly theres very little you can customize on an already built pistol...at least to make it unique.

Re: 1911 upgrades

Look into Pistol Dynamics - his ISS sight system is unique, and some other parts....plugs etc are another touch from diff. manuf.

Ultimately, as Minor and RR above stated. Sell it IMO. Talk to Steve Morrison (MARS), Heirloom, Dave Lauck DL Sports, Matt Gish, Chuck Brown, Paul Liebenberg Pistol Dynamics, or one of other top smiths of the 1911 listed on several threads in this section. That would be something to call Heirloom.

just some thoughts

Re: 1911 upgrades

I agree in part with MinorDamage.
You don't see Kimber and Heirloom in the same sentence very often. I have a customized Kimber Compact and the only reason I spent that kind of money on it was I wanted an alloy, Officers frame with a 4" slide for a carry gun.
Caspian slides are good as any and better than most, you can order any profile and feature. I was talking with some Smiths earlier this year and they have been pretty disappointed with small voids in the castings on Caspian Frames.
If you want a 10mm, I would either start with a Colt Delta or a Les Baer frame and slide. But first I would find a Smith and find out what he recomends as they all have their preferences.
Try checking out the link below. It's 1911 porn at its best and any of these guys can build you a true Heirloom.

Yeah, right. Do you know how long it takes to get a gun from SV?

Re: 1911 upgrades

1st thing for any heirloom 1911 piece is to make sure it works..then get the fluff

I agree with Josh, except I prefer instead to use pre-enhanced Colt MKIV Series 80 pistols as base guns.

Re: 1911 upgrades

I had a full house built on a series 70 Colt, it's so pretty I've never shot it. I have another piece built by Drake of Drakes Custom guns, excellent work and very reasonable prices. Best shooter I have though that is dead nuts accurate is my Wilson CQB elite two tone with naked slide.

I'd say save your pennys and get a wilson. Most of the big 1911 builders have 3-5 year wait lists for full house customs and you're looking at 5-6k usually.

My input (and that ain't worth much) would be dependent upon what NIB Kimber model it is. If it says "II" on it anywhere, and you don't see it as a shooter-trade it.
If it doesn't have a "II" on it and says "yonkers" on the frame and you are inclined to have some modifications done so it fits you and shoots better-go for it!
If it doesn't have a "II" on it and says "Clackamas" on the frame keepit NIB unmolested adn either hang on to it and let it appreciate or sell it to fund buying a frame and slide recommeneded by the smith you choose.

There's a guy that sometimes posts here that would be a great choice for 1911 work, now who was that........???

Oh yeah-contact the poster above me!!

Re: 1911 upgrades

Sell it and buy something that is already an heirloom. It will only get more heirloomy......

Re: 1911 upgrades

Same Boat Here.
I have just traded for two unmolested Colt 70 series Blue Gov'ts to send off for the same treatments. I have two sons, one 9 and the other 10. I know it will take a few years for the builds but heck, I have pleanty of time. I believe I am going to go to John Harrison for the retro look. I want the to be 100% reliable first and foremost. Than The Classly look..No boat tails, Rails, extended this or thats, just old fashioned Blue steal and that big ol' 45 hole out the other end...
I also believe that the Heiloom should be 45acp in the 1911 format, at least for the first build. If I only had one 1911 I would want it to be... A Colt, and yes in 45acp..
My opinion only. Good luck on whatever you decide.
