I've been suggesting LAR Grizzly for some time to new members because I have had such a good experience with the company as well as the rifle I bought from them. Being as they seem to be somewhat unknown I thought I'd post a little to show what these rifles are made of.
My brother (AKA Burglecutt on the hide) just received his LAR precision operator rifle from Zac (AKA MildotZ on the hide). And today was the cherry-breaker for it. His rifle is very similar to mine; 20" 8 twist Wilson barrel threaded 5/8-24, the difference is he got the skeletonized lower and his sports the new SS5-20HD in a PEPR mount. Mine has the MKIV 4-14X50 on it.
Both guns are side charging, something that until I had one I thought was just another way to do it. Well after shooting with one for over a year now, I've decided I could never go back to the original. It just fits perfectly, not having to move from the shooting position to operate the bolt, it feels much more sturdy than the flimsy aluminum charging handle, and the knurled knob give's great purchase without being too bulky or in the way.

We started out by sighting his gun in, after that, we shot a few groups. I'll admit I was just in a hurry to double check my gun and make sure it still shot tight enough for me. Burglecutt spent a little more time, and while his initial groups showed great potential, they were quickly ruined by a couple of "flyers"

    .
This is what my rushed group looked like, the one man out was because I changed positions

After shooting our "groups" we went looking for some further targets, first a rock at 275, then one at 300, 500, and finally 930. I was extremely happy with my first shot at the 930, a rock about the size of a gallon jug. 26.5MOA and I held two mils left for the wind, the shot couldn't have missed by more than an inch or two. We pummeled the shit out of the rock, with plenty of very close misses as well. The wind was probably between 1-7 MPH left to right all afternoon, but it kept changing speeds. We had an awesome time, and will be showing alot more about what these rifles can do.

    Re: LAR Grizzly shootout

Are you right or left handed? I never did care for side chargers on the right. Takes more time to clear a jam or for any purpose if you are right handed than a basic CH. I do see the left side chargers. I know grizzly does each based on customer. I was just curious if you got it on the right over the left for any specific reason?

    Re: LAR Grizzly shootout

Nice looking rifles. I have been wanting to do a side charging build for awhile. Your pictures just pushed me over the edge.

    Re: LAR Grizzly shootout

What is the knob for on the rear of the receiver?

    Re: LAR Grizzly shootout

The knob is simply a plug to cover the hole where standard AR's charging handle would be( needs be removed to remove bolt).

    Re: LAR Grizzly shootout

thanks chubbles. you'll see first hand what she and I can do

I use the Model 1 armorer's blocks, upper and lower receiver. They work well.

Can a standard charging handle be installed along with the side charger setup?

No, its a totaly different upper reveiver built only as a side charger. At the back of the receiver where the standard charging handle would go in, it is threaded round for the screw in plug. This is only used for taking the BCG in/out. Hope this helps. Its a very nice upper! Mine runs smooth, very nice.

Ah ok, now that I look closer I see what you mean. Not a big deal really. I plan to get one sometime this year.

Nope, it is screwed into the BCG. Solid.

    Re: LAR Grizzly shootout

Its the sound of the BCG moving inside the billit receiver. The billit sounds alittle different. My 2cents

Most of the after-racket is actually the buffer spring.

    Re: LAR Grizzly shootout

I got another question since you guys seem to know a lot about these.
LAR lists a forged and a billet upper. Excluding the OP's green rifle every picture I have seen of these look the same. Is there any physical difference between the two types of uppers?

I dont believe so, IIRC when I bought mine they told me the only difference was the price.

    Re: LAR Grizzly shootout

Thanks. So your brothers is forged? I'm going to build one up soon. Is LAR the best place to get an ops4 upper receiver or are they sold elsewhere?

No, I think mine and his are the same. I believe they have dealers around the country, but I believe you can buy them from LAR as well. PM Mildotz here on the hide, he can tell it to you straight.
