There is nothing wrong with the WM. You can push heavier bullets faster.
I guess the real question is what do you need it to do? If you are pushing it as far as you can go then the WM might be the way to go. If you want a light hunting rifle with a short bolt throw then the WSM is the way to go. Both rounds are pretty darn good it really comes down to what you want to do with it? Someone will be able to tell you about accessories.
I shoot my WM in a McMillian A4 with badger ord bottom metal. I should have gotten a AICS stock.

I have Sako Grey Wolf 300WSM and a Remington 700 in 300WM. I prefer the 300WSM, I think it has less recoil, and for hunting anything in North America, there's nothing a 300WM can do that a 300WSM won't.
I wouldn't take a shot on anything beyond 500 yards with either gun (that's just me), and both are well within dropping anything at that range (in NA).
The only other disadvantages that a 300WM would have is possibly barrel life, but I'm not for sure on this.
The major advantage of 300WM is more readily available ammo supply.

I like the short action, and went with the WSM. No regrets here. It seems to me (and my 120 lb 17 yo daughter) that the recoil is not as bad as the WM.
If you found a good deal on a sako I say go for it.

I say go for the 5r. I bought one in 308 and my buddy has one in 300wm. Its a really accurate rifle and you won't be disappointed.

Anyone ever come up with a quantitative way to measure recoil? We study the heck out of velocity, but never what happens out the other end of the rifle.
If WSM and WM both throw the same bullet at the same speed, they should be generating the same recoil energy... maybe it's the shape of the energy delivery curve?

Good question on recoil. For us it was a trip to the range with a buddy who had the same rifle (remington 700) in 300 WM. Loads were both 180 grain bullets. All 3 of us shot both rifles, and we all agreed the WSM seemed to be a little easier on the shoulder. Not great objective data, but that's how I came to the conclusion. And honestly neither rifle was overly punishing for the amount we shot that day.

Less recoil because the WSM is a smaller case, using smaller powder charges, and produces lower velocity...Simple physics...No magic involved.
All of the 30 mags perform and shoot well.
To me the serious question is 300 or 7mm...There be the question you want to consider...Just sayin'.
