Going to start shooting out to 500yds. Was wondering if the NF or March would be that much better than the 45x bench rest Leupold I have now.
Thanks

Monkey see - Monkey do. The reason so many run NF is they offer reasonably priced high mag variables with a little bit of adjustment range built in. It's not because they are superior, IMHO.

There are many out there that run the Leupold Competition scopes with excellent results.

Now to the OPs question. A fixed 45x power scope can be tough to use, especially at distance. Some people have no problems with the high mag scopes, but some can't stand them when the mirage is rough. Personally, when using a high power variable, I usually keep the power dialed up when shooting targets at distance. If you are going to be shooting stationary targets and the Leupold has enough adjustment for you, stick with it.

If you must have a variable and high magnification, I would probably get a Sightron or a NF. They at least have good warranties, something the March is lacking in regards to length.

Re: Leupold va Nightforce vs March

I bought a NF because of the research I'd done, personal recommendations, and because I concluded I could trust my life to it.
I will admit that I am very far from knowing all the answers or even half the answers. As I am on a new rifle build, I'm interested in knowing what other scopes, similarly or more affordably priced, are in the same class as a NF?
Also, how did you reach your conclusions? Do you own both brands, etc?
Thanks.

Which NF? There products range from low mag carbine optics to high mag benchrest scopes.

I do own both Leupold and NF. I don't consider either of them top of the line, but both companies make scopes that fill certain roles well.

Re: Leupold va Nightforce vs March

I agree with Matchking. If you are happy with your Leupold I would stick with it. The only reason IMHO opinion you should change is if your Scope is not tracking properly or you need finer adjustments i.e. 1/8 MOA adjustments. I have owned a nightforce, numerous leupolds and in my opinion there is not much difference in the quality of the glass. Now i admit the Nightforce is one Tough S.O.B.

YMMV,

Re: Leupold va Nightforce vs March

I do not own and am unfamiliar with the March, and have only owned one Leupold, which was a hand-me-down from my grandpa, so the tech is outdated. So, defer to the others on this site that know much more than I do about these. I do have a 5.5-22 56 NXS NF, and feel comfortable testifying to it's abilities. First, if you're going to be shooting out to 500 most will encourage you to get a 3.5-15 NF. I can see the logic in that , but my thinking is go ahead and get the 5.5-22. That way, if you do decide to shoot out to 800-1000 as you mention, you don't need another scope. Some of the guys I shoot with argue that 12x is high enough for 1000 yrds, but I digress. The only downsides to the higher power scope, is you lose 2x magnification on the small end, its a few hundred dollars more, and you gain a few ounces in weight. Second, you have to be realistic with how good of a shooter you are. I know that the NF will probably always be better than I am. I don't think I'll ever shoot a great group, scoff at my NF and say "I've outgrown you". Schmidt & Bender and US optics are great scopes, but they breach my personal point of diminished returns as far as what you get for the extra money. Third, my NF has not let me down, ever. It has never lost zero, the hs turrets and 0stop work flawlessly, and my best 3 shot group at 1000 so far is 6 inches. And I'm the weak link with the equipment.
Hope this helps.

Re: Leupold va Nightforce vs March

I had the opportunity to stop by Kelbly's booth at SHOT to check out the entire March line.

One of the things that impresses me about the March scopes is their ability to focus down to 10 meters crystal clear on their highest magnifications.

They also pack alot of magnification in a rather overall compact package for what you get.

Their digital illumination feature was very nice as well.

Reticles were not bad.

I could not gather a reasonable perception of resolution or contrast because we were inside, but what I saw was pleasing.

After speaking with Ian at Kelbly's, I would have never guessed that March only produces 1200 scopes a year for their entire product line.
