It started off as a 20" SPS in a Hogue stock. I received the Bell and Carlson target/varmint stock (bedded), CDI bottom metal w/ AICS 5rd mag, Callahan firing pin assembly, 20 MOA EGW base (bedded), bolt and bolt lugs lapped with JB, barrel lapped, Phoenix Custom bolt knob, i'm thinking TPS rings (lapped), Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 mil/mil. I worked the factory X Mark trigger down to about 3 lbs but it will be getting a Jewell set at a crisp 2 lbs. so it can still be used and abused..... Thoughts on the build anyone?

This gun is going to be for someone who has never shot any type of distance before and i'm trying to get him in the 1k mark this summer. [img:center]

Re: 20" Remington 700 build

Nice build. Is he going to shoot off of a bipod? Atlast? Harris? Other? Is the EGW a 20 moa for helping the scope with distance? Regardless of these questions, that will be a nice rifle. If he new to rifle make sure he gets a bore guide and good cleaning rod. Not too long ago I saw a guy with a beautiful rifle and no bore guide. Not trying to insult intelligence, just stating the not so obvious.

I stressed proper cleaning as soon as he told me he wanted to get into this. He was used to cleaning from the bore and with a 3 pc aluminum rod.....OUCH! I know.

As for the bipod, I have a pivot Harris lined up for him.

Re: 20" Remington 700 build

Well I finished bedding the base today. Hers some pictures while I was in the process.

First taped off area where i didnt want to hit the action or stock with the JB Weld by accident. Kiwi shoe polish and Vaseline for release agent.
A808216C-orig.jpg
[/img]
Then scuffed the base for good contact with 220 grit and put some polish where i didnt want the JB to stick.
A7D3E0F2-orig.jpg
[/img]
Then mix your JB 1-1 and apply to base but watch your screw holes. Place the base on the action and screw it down from the rear while holding the front up so you get it right where you need it once its tightened down.

[/img]
The once you have a slight bit oozing out on all sides, just wet a paper towel with WD40 and get yourself some Qtips. Dab the Qtip in the WD and wipe the access JB Weld off to get a nice clean line.
BB6B9895-orig.jpg
[/img]
After about 4-5 hours later, take the base off while being careful, take a drill bit and hand turn the screw holes to clean out the JB before it turns to steel.

[/img]
Put it back on with all screws tight and the groves from the release agent will flatten and smooth away and you'll have a nice finished product in 24 hours and ready to mount up the scope of your choice.

You can see the Callahan firing pin assembly installed in this pic. You must run these with a little more lube than factory. They are fairly tight tolerances and WOW are they light.

Re: 20" Remington 700 build

sounds like mine--it is coming together. Began life as a 20" varmit. Now has a B & C stock with CDI inletted and Timney trigger. I like it well.

Re: 20" Remington 700 build

Sorry about the typo. It is looking good. It looks as if you are taking good care of this rifle...and friend.

Re: 20" Remington 700 build

Nice rifle Boyder. The stock will be getting sent down to Jeff at CDI this week so he can inlet it for the bottom metal.

Re: 20" Remington 700 build

I just bedded my first scope base recently. Forgot to wax the base screw holes. Took a bit to get em cleaned out. I did put putty in the receiver threads though. I bedded the rear so that it wouldn't take away any elevation.

The key is to set an alarm after you first bed the base for about 5 hours after or until you feel confident that the JB has hardened but not cured. Pull the base off and twist a drill bit of the correct screw size in the base holes by hand. Once that is done, take all 4 screws and tighten the whole base down for 24 hours. Once that is done, pull it off, trim with sand paper or dremel where the JB has oozed out a little bit more, then use a sharpie to paint up the gray of the JB on the sides. You now have a perfect bedding job;-)

You wont loose much elevation if any.... You'll end up with a 19 MOA base instead of 20. That wont mean much unless you plan on shooting steel on the moon.

Re: 20" Remington 700 build

Sounds like it will be a pretty nice build... Like the pics and progress so far!

Re: 20" Remington 700 build

I'm really interested in this build as its very similar to a build I'm preparing for. Just need to sell my savage 10 first!

Re: 20" Remington 700 build

Newbie question: why bed only the front?

Usually, its the front or the back that doesent line up and you can just bed the side thats too high

Re: 20" Remington 700 build

Yes but the inletting will be done by Jeff at CDI since I do not have a mill. It gets sent out next week. There will be pictures

Re: 20" Remington 700 build

cant wait to see the progress on this rifle.. any way you could put up the cost for each stage you do and the items used?

Re: 20" Remington 700 build

Update:

Stock was just shipped to CDI precision and the bolt is ready to be sent to PCR for the bolt knob.

Re: 20" Remington 700 build

Well I received the stock back from Jeff at CDI. Everything fits perfect and the milling job is top notch. Hopefully ill be getting the bolt back soon from PCR within a week or so.

Ill be bedding the action once I have all the parts. I have to pick up some modeling clay. Stay tuned!

Re: 20" Remington 700 build

Very nice. I'm waiting on my last parts of my build before I start bedding anything. Maybe ill take pictures and post them on here. It'd be nice to have a friend like you. I built a rifle for a friend. He said he wanted it exactly like mine. So while I had to wait and save money to build mine I built his

Re: 20" Remington 700 build

Brutal watching someone else's rifle coming together before yours. Especially if your the one building it for him lol.

Re: 20" Remington 700 build

Re: 20" Remington 700 build

I received the bolt back from PCR and since it was such a nice day today, ill throw you a few pics. Next it will be bedded. [img:center]http://

Re: 20" Remington 700 build

really interested to see what your rifle weighs with that stock.

Re: 20" Remington 700 build

Did you bed the barreled action with the tape on the back side of the recoil lug as seen in the pic? I'm wondering how that will work out for you.

Re: 20" Remington 700 build

Tanner, I was surprised how light the stock was. It's very comfortable as well. I'll give an over all weight once complete.

Hdbiker, that pic was taken prior to me cutting the rear of the tape. It was only left on the front. After cured it was super snug but after some work, it popped out. I built up a dam for the compound about an inch out from the recoil lug as well. It worked out well.

Re: 20" Remington 700 build (Updates)

Ok heres some updated pictures of some of the progress. Its not totally in the order I want them to be in and I left a lot out due to getting involved in what i was working with.

First off, I wanted to give this stock some texture. This gun is not going to be a safe queen. It will be used and hunted with during the seasons. I figured Marine Tex would do the job.

Started by taping off the area and cutting out how I wanted the grip. The owner is a fairly big guy and wanted the grip to wrap around the whole way.

[/img]
[img:center]http://
7084920D-orig.jpg
[/img]

Here is a shot once dry and before sanding. You can see how the Marine Tex is shiny and very rough. This stuff is nasty sharp prior to sanding. I mocked up the scope and rings before bead blasting for Cerakote.
[img:center]http://
A79FBE59-orig.jpg
[/img]

I also wanted to bed the stock so the action had complete rigidity.
I start by taping everything off and disassembly, modeling clay works best for inside the action, add a built up tape dam about an inch in front of the lug, add 1 layer of tape around lug then nicely cut the tape from the rear action side of the lug so there is complete contact and leaving the tape on the front for easier removal, rough up the area that is to be beaded and make sure you put release agent on EVERYTHING that you dont want bedding compound on. For this application, I used Devcon putty and Kiwi shoe polish as release.

Yes... That is a Trap Door Springfield in the back ground that someone totally Fk'd up and I had to fix it.

Prior to removing tape from rear on lug and smoothing everything out.

[/img]

Set the action in, screw down with release agent coated action screws, tighten and remove excess with WD40 and Qtips.

Finished product with my own touch...

Barrel is now cut to 18''
Threaded for supressor/brake
Muscle Brake on back order
Action/Barrel awaiting OD Cerakote
A little more lapping and BOOM! Im probably forgetting stuff too.
Ill give an update again in a week or so.

Re: 20" Remington 700 build (Updates)

Is marine tex some kind of epoxy? Different than JB weld? Beautiful work so far Bruno86!! You are a dam good friend.

Tell him that.... He was about a fly dick away from getting his jaw jacked at work the other day;)

Anyways,
Yes. It kinda has the consistency of JB but a tad thicker. It is normally used to repair boat hauls. Very strong stuff and when you put about a 1/16" coat on with a putty knife or plastic butter knife, get it even then wrap a plastic grocery bag around your hand and dab it quick up and down. It pulls the putty in an upward position that look like little spikes. Let it set up and sand to your liking. WAYYYY better than any checkering but it may not suit some peoples tastes. Works well on B&C stock that don't come checkered as well as many others.

Re: 20" Remington 700 build (Updates)

Bruno86 I was just wondering if you have used devcon for bedding and texture if so do you prefer the marine tex I really just want to know your opinion because you do really good work with marine tex and I have used devcon to bed actions and once to texture a swap out hunting stock for my Remmy but I didn´t like the feel anyway just wanted to ask sorry for rambling.

Re: 20" Remington 700 build (Updates)

Bruno86 what did you use to create the camo pattern? Awesome job and thank you for documenting the procedure.

Re: 20" Remington 700 build (Updates)

I never used the Devcon for the texture because I think it's a little to thick and doesn't pull up well with the bag method. The marine tex you can let set up for about 20 min and pulls up to a sharp spike.

As for the camo, I cut out all my own patterns.

Re: 20" Remington 700 build (Updates)

Thank you Bruno86 I will be using marine tex for my next texture job and again hell of job I like your work bedding, texture and camo.

Re: 20" Remington 700 build (Updates)

Thanks CHUBS. If you need some help on something, this is a great place to find it. Lots of good people on this site.
