Lots of guys "make" an AR from parts but here is one a little different. It started out as a little shop thearapy after my CNC went TU again a couple winters ago. Since I didn't have the money to buy another $1500 board at the time and the project I was working on really needed CNC, I took a break and went old-school milling out a billet upper and lower (less than $60 in materials on the upper and lower) on a bridgeport without DRO's and a manual lathe. Once I was into it that deep, I decided to make a ajustable stock and a handguard .... Barreled it with a cheapo green mountain 1-7 blank that I turned and chambered. All together the most expensive part was the optics - SS 16X followed by the bolt carrier and the JP trigger. Like to many of my personal shop projects it got placed on the back burner after getting it 98% done. Finally finished it a few months and am still debating if I like the GM barrel or if I will fit a decent tube, it wants to shoot at the beggining of a 10 shot group but will invariablely leak 1 or 2 out of a 10 shot group ruining what would have been a great .5-.7 moa group and bringing it out to 1-1.5 moa.
Dang sure learned a few things about stoners design staring at prints and remembered a few things I had forgot about machining and AR's....

Re: Home Made Billet AR

That shiny thing in the first picture is another AR reciever that just doesn't know it yet....

Re: Home Made Billet AR

The man has skills!!!! Pretty sweet that you can make your own weapons and don't have to report it, F'n sweet!!!!!!!

Re: Home Made Billet AR

That is sweet! But unless im wrong and correct me if I am, But I think you do have to report it. You must have a manufacturing license from ATF to build a lower receiver and it must have a serial number on it! But it is cool that you can build this, and it looks like a very nice job!

only if you are going to sell it

Re: Home Made Billet AR

Your right Adam! Sorry guys I spoke to soon. You can make them for yourself as long as your not prohibited by law from owning a firearm, and not going to sell them.

Country 888

I am not a lawyer but did stay i a holiday inn once, the ATF is very clear on the ability for a non prohibited person (ie felon, drug user, denounced citizenship....) to make their own firearm read GCA 1968 in its entirety or simply go to their web site and read the darn FAQ's its in there last I checked along with a multitude of ATF publications. They do not require a serial number unless sold but recommend one. You can sell one you made without a manufacturer's license as long as you did not INTEND to sell it when you made it, ie it is legal to dispose of it but you are getting into a gray area that gets you closer to potential problems. I never will sell any firearm I have made the receiver on for this reason besides it is a labor of love not "saving" money.

PS people jumping to conclusions and making statements like that have kept me from sharing more than one cool and LEGAL project but I had a moment of weakness after reading the bolt action budget build and thought hey I have a real budget semi....

Re: Home Made Billet AR

how many hours do you have in the lower receiver? i think its awesome you did it without digital read outs on the mill i cant even imagine all the dial counting lol. also why did you go with a side charging handle? are the prints you made it from publicly available?

Re: Home Made Billet AR

I know a (very) tiny bit about running an old Bridgeport, and you sir, have skill. That is a serious undertaking without modern machining conveniences. Well done!

Re: Home Made Billet AR

Biscuit-Couple months off and on (project ADD syndrome) the rest of it took longer even though the parts were more simple, more a lack of motivation. I went with a side charger because I could and because it made making certain features on the upper easier. I have a "gas plug" attached to the upper where the charging handle would be to prevent gas blow by as there is no charge handle (afraid the handle would not be compatible with cheeckpeice , and didn't want to buy a "non-functional" part)

I have since upgraded to a DRO on that mill and the next one was like I was cheating- about 3 days in the shop. Making them Full size CNC is even more fun- no more making spreadsheets to plot radius cuts.....

Re: Home Made Billet AR

That is so SICK! I have been looking at purchasing a mill and lathe to start building stuff like this, everytime I have enough money I just buy another rifle... Maybe someday when I meet my quota on how many rifles I want to own(We all know this never happens) I will buy one.
