First, I doubt anyone will agree with me so be kind.
What I want is a scope similar to the NF 2.5-10x24 but FFP with side focus. I have tried many scopes and the little NF is the closest I can get to perfection. I would prefer it to go to 12 X. I do not want or need a large objective. I would perfer S&B quality glass.
The shortfalls of the NF are no focus, 2ed FP and slightly too low in power on the top end. I have little need for the bottom end and could get by at 4x easily. I only drop it down for NV use anyway. I always shoot it a 10x. This is on a very accurate AR that I use for predator control, varmint shooting and deer culling. Does a scope like this appeal to anyone else?

Re: The perfect for my use

I've for a long time wished I had a 2.5-10x NF with a SF and a 40-44mm objective. But no such luck.

However, I do believe that FFP would be a waste on a 2.5-10x as the reticle gets so small and washes out at lower powers.

If you always shoot at 10x, then what's the point of FFP anyway?

Re: The perfect for my use

NV use is at lower power and I would still like to range.

Re: The perfect for my use

Can you really see the reticle that well all the way down to range? But if you run it at 1/4 power or 1/2 power, just remember each mil is doubled or quadruple in value.

Re: The perfect for my use

Have you checked out the new IOR 1-10X Eliminator scope? It has a dual reticle SFP /FFP. Check it out on Scott's website: http://www.libertyoptics.com/index1.html
It's the first scope listed under the Tactical 35mm scope section. Otherwise the 3-18x scope has been a very popular scope as well. Either way...you get glass that's in the same league as S&B.

I'd also recommend either calling scott or writing him....he's extremely knowledgeable about optics and has helped many of us sort things out.

Good Luck,

Wayne

Wayne,
I really like the features of that scope. Have you used any IOR products? I know nothing about them.

Re: The perfect for my use

Yes...I had a 6-24x...an early gen 1 or 2. This was my first exposure to German Glass. The optics are absolutely fantastic. I could really get a sense of depth looking through this scope, almost 3D. My only problem with the scope was...dialing settings...the scope would hang for a shot when the temp was 18-20 degrees outside. This was on my hunting rifle...so I was forced to get rid of it. Never had a problem above 30 degrees.

I now own two Premier Heritage scopes( Among others) and will be in the market for an IOR....4th generation within the next few months. My eyes really appreciate German glass...so much so I sold my two NightForce scopes...and I couldn't be happier.

I think the latest generation of IOR's are a real legit player in premium optics. They are also priced much better than the others that have German sourced glass. S&B, Zeiss / Henzholt etc. are a more polished scope...but the IOR has the glass and now internals....they just have a more robust look.

Worth at least a look...to have a well rounded perspective on what's available.

Wayne

P.S.
I would not hesitate to give Scott a call. He can offer you significantly more information and direct comparisons as he's seen just about everything.

P.P.S

I'm not knocking NF...they make a great product...but for my eyes, the glass doesn't quite cut it. I seem to have less eye fatigue looking through premium German sourced glass....YMMV.

BTW, IOR sources their glass from Schott...just like S&B and Zeiss. IOR has a close relationship with Zeiss....Zeiss shares their coating technology with IOR. So...you are getting premium German sourced glass and coatings.

Re: The perfect for my use

Graham,
I tried one of those and really liked most of the features. It is still my favorite S&B scope. It had two downsides. One, just a much bigger scope than I am looking for. Two, it is so long that I could not mount the PVS 22 in front of it on a MK 12 mod 1 at the proper length. It is close though. Thank you for the input.

Re: The perfect for my use

Wayne,
Thank you, I will be checking it out.

Re: The perfect for my use

I know you said you are not interested in a larger objective, but have you thought about a Hensoldt 3-12x56? Short, awesome lowlight performance, smooth sidefocus, FFP, variable illumination that does not wash out image or NV, and unbelieveable brightness and clarity. It is also relatively light for a tactical scope (28oz).

Re: The perfect for my use

x56???
Thank you, but no, I did not consider it.
I did put on a 3-12x50 S&B prior to the 4-16x42 S&B. Just more than I care to hump around.
I really like the IOR idea. I will likely try it. I may also look at the USO again, but I think all are too big.

The Hensoldt 3-12x56 is over 2.5 inches shorter and 3 ounces lighter than a S&B 4-16x42.

Re: The perfect for my use

x56 is out, even if it floats on air, levitates the rifle and shits golden eggs.
