ok guys im new to the long range thing but not new to guns at all, i was wondering what rifle you guys would recommend to get started in the sport, i was thinking build on a stevens 200, savage 10fcp-k, 700sps i want it in 308 and 1000yd capable. also i plan on this going into an xlr chassis, witch is why i am not looking at the mcmillan or hc savage so much. thanks

Re: best beginner gun

I'm in a very similar position as you, being an experienced shooter but new to the long range game. I recently picked up a Remington 700 SPS Tactical in .308. I didn't wanna break the bank on my first bolt action, it was readily available at most gun shops, and there is plenty of aftermarket support and information in the internet for the platform. Sadly, I haven't yet put optics on in so I can't comment on how it shoots. But this was the weapon a lot of people recommended I go with. Good luck to you.

Re: best beginner gun

Just got a Remington 700 sps tactical AAC-SD and I LOVE it! Got to play with it out to 300 yards day before yesterday and it was great! I'm taking it out on Sunday to see how well I can do at 600-900 yards.

Re: best beginner gun

i just built my 308 with a remington 700 sps varmint barreled action and it shoots really well.i just tested some diff loads today and guna do a little more fine tunning tonight. only thing is that i dont like the trigger. i wanna replace it with a timney 510

Re: best beginner gun

i just sold a remington 700 varmint in .204 and the thing was a tack driver. the reason i listed the savages is there easy to upgrade, the one mod i know i want to do on the action or bolt rather is an over sized knob and with the savage its a bolt on feature vs grinding and threading on the remy, now im just saying i like the idea i have never owned a savage bolt gun.

Re: best beginner gun

I think I would go with a remington sps tactical or varmint in 308. These are probably the best out of the box gun for the price and when its time to upgrade the market is better for remington over savage. If you look through the for sale section on here remington products out weigh savage 3 to 1. The 308 has a wide range of bullet choices and powder and there is alot of cheap ammo aviailable also.

Re: best beginner gun

ok thats good to know plus i just found the no smith oversize handle for the rem. how about barrel length on a 1000yd gun i like that aac sd 700 but it seems a little short in the barrel department i may very well be wrong though too, but i would think you would want 24-26"

Re: best beginner gun

I only shoot out 600 and use a vls that was cut down to 22. Then rifle is so much more manuverable with the 22. If I was building a rifle for 1000 yard only I would go for 26 or longer, but my rifle is multipurpose. You loose some velocity with the shorter barrel ,which hurts when trying to dope the wind, but you sometimes gain accuracy. My next barrel will be a 20, it probably wont be the best rifle at 1000 but I shoot more 100-600.

Re: best beginner gun

If you're going to do it, do it big. Barrett M82-A1 in 50BMG firing slap rounds (308 projectile). Its a sure bet that the bullet will go whizzing by the 1000 yard mark.

Of course, I recall something about not firing slap out of the M82... The round exits the the side of the barrel maybe.

As a side benefit, nobody sits next to the guy with the 50BMG at the range. The muzzle blast blows their shit off of the table and I like the elbow room anyways.

Re: best beginner gun

boy that would be nice, i would if i had a spare 10-12g's. im liking the looks of the 700 aac-sd and its not a bad price point i can get that shipped with an ffl transfer for cheaper than a used 10fcp-k. after watching the lonewolfusmc videos i think im going to go the same route with a different scope and either an evolution or aics chassis. thank you guys for your help

I was torn between that and a 5R went with the 5R 20" pre-threaded barrel cause i like Stainless and it came with a HS stock.

Re: best beginner gun

Well I decided to jump in tonight I orderd the rem 700 AAC sd and a 10x42 ss now I need to order my bolt lift and do some research on mounts and rings, any pointers? All I know is I want a 1 pice picanty base.

Re: best beginner gun

On the less expensive side, you can get an American made Weaver tactical Aluminum rail with integral recoil lug. On the higher end you can get Badger or Seekins base and rings.

I purchased in the middle with a Leupold M4 base and Warne Maxima rings. Very stable and IMHO the MK4 base looks like it belongs on the R700 receiver (doesnt overhang too much).

Re: best beginner gun

I recommend that you keep an eye out for a nice barreled action in the for sale section. They pop up and you can get something nice and save some also.
