Okay, so I am tired of using a second rifle with a nightforce as a spotting scope. I do not wanna buy a extremely cheap scope but I also don't wanna use all my gun cash on a spotting scope. Any recommendations for anything decent from $600 to $1200? I would like to hear what yall use. (not expecting anything super amazing for the price). My wife actually wants me to get one so she can check out birds without having to point a rifle at them.

Lots of discussion in the Observation Device subforum. I'm about to pull the trigger on a Pentax PF80 ED and then pony up on a 1st rate bipod and head (Manfrotto 005XPROB / 322RC2).

If you are willing to get towards the upper end of your budget you should be able to get into a Kowa or a used Vortex Razor. Also the reviews on the Vortex Viper HD's seems to be very positive.

Contact Scott @ Liberty Optics or Doug/Neil at CameralandNY. They will talk it over with you and get you into something for your uses.

Spend as much as you are comfortable spending. Good glass in a spotter does make a difference.

I was not even aware vortex made a spotting scope, that makes things easy I am willing to pay more for quality and I do like vortex, thanks guys.

I would look at Vortex Spotter you cant go wrong with Scott @ Liberty Optics.

Use your 2nd Rifle. Problem with almost all spotting scopes is they do not have any ranging reticle on them. Only option I see are the Leupolds, but at $1200 for something that is on par with my $200 Konus, other than having a ranging reticle, I think I will pass.

It would be awesome if someone had an MOA reticle spotting scope.

Well, not glamorous, but I just got an Argus supergrade 20 power, 60mm obj for $75. Made in the 40s, survived the war, is heavy duty, compact, and the glass is beautiful. BEAUTIFUL. Just wish it had a reticle, but for $75, hard to complain.

My partners bushnell with mildot reticle is actually quite nice - and for $400(ish), a pretty good buy. No, it's not a spotter 60, but is entirely adequate for our purposes.

I like Bushnell glass, it's decent glass at any price point. I plan to get the new one when it comes out. FFP and only $400!!! http://www.midwayusa.com/product/178632/...nd-tripod-black

Re: Spotting scopes that won't break the bank?

My Father-in-law bought me a Barska 20-60 and I thought it would never get any use as I was thinking about a Pentax80 or 100 (if I could find one) or a Kowa long eye relief scope at the time. Well that was 8 months ago and the little scope is still in my gear bag every weekend.

The Barska totally gets the job done while I'm figuring out exactly what I want.

Re: Spotting scopes that won't break the bank?

I have the Celestron ED 80X and I used it at 600 meters last week. The glass is clear, with very little color fringing, but it wasn't as bright as the Leupold that was next to it. It only cost $400 though, and I think it's a pretty good value.

Here's a post I grabbed off another forum.

The Celestron model is made in China. It arrived in 2004 and is billed in some web reviews as comparable to the highly rated Swarovski 80 HD scope at about 25% of the price.

So I ordered one. I had to wait a few weeks as the model is sold out, backordered on almost every web site I visited. The 2 sites that had them in stock were asking about a $100 premium. I purchased at $466 which included S&H.

After it arrived, I took it down to a local outfitters where they have a dozen spotting scopes set up near a large window, including a Swarovski 80 HD.

The salesman allowed me to install my scope on the tripod next to the Swarovski 80 HD and do a side-by-side comparison, looking at various objects at various distances. Both scopes were equipped with 20-60 zoom lenses.

To my eye, the Swarovski performed slightly better at the extreme zoom (60) and distance. At most settings I felt the Celestron ED was very comparable in image clarity and color. The Celestron produced very sharp, clear, colorful images and after the side-by-side I remained satisfied with my purchase.

The salesman checked out my scope and told me he plans to add the Celestron 80 ED model to his lineup of scopes.

Re: Spotting scopes that won't break the bank?

Wife got me the 20-60x60mm Vortex Nomad with angled eyepiece for Christmas on Amazon for appx $330. I believe the Nomad is a lot like a Viper with a lightweight shell.

Weather has been unsat for shooting up here this close to Canada, but I did sneak a quick peek at 250yd around New Years, and I anticipate no problems spotting 22 cal holes with it out to that distance. Really sharp and clear at full power. Very happy with it.

My prior optic was a 20-60x60 Simmons cheapie, and I had no idea how badly I had handicapped myself with that until I got this Nomad.

Re: Spotting scopes that won't break the bank?

i am currently using a burris XTS 2575. it uses a mirror system like celestial telescopes. my opinion is still out. it is clear but very adjustment sensitive. they are pretty cheap. i will continue with it and see. would like someting that will do .22 @ 200,maybe 30 @ 600. doubt i could afford such an animal though. kowa or better? it replaced a konus, which for the price, was not bad at all.

Re: Spotting scopes that won't break the bank?

Celestron regal 65 ED is a good scope for the money.

Have the same scope, simple and it works good. Other good deals are M48, M49, and old Balscopes.

Re: Spotting scopes that won't break the bank?

I have the Leopold gold ring spotter and love it. It's is lightweight weight compact for putting in you pack for shooting or hunting. The glass in it is awesome, you won't be disappointed with it. They are right at $1000
