I have look at all the forums I can find on here and I still have some questions. Is there any pros and cons of these two? What grain bullets do these rounds like and how much powder to get the same velocity? The max velocity I will go from 28 to 2900 fps I am looking at getting a 24in barrel. What kind of barrel life are these rounds getting? Can you load to the lands while useing a mag? Is there a pro to the small rifle primer vs large primers? LOL well thats all I can think of for now any help will be very helpful. Thank you

Re: 6.5x47 vs 6.5 creedmoor

6.5 lapua-123 scenars/ 130 berger vlds

2800-3000 fps depending on how you load them

36-37.5 grains of re15

room to spare if mag fed

can't comment on barrel life I would guess 3-4000 rds

only benefit I can think of for small rifle primers is stronger
case head. Some say it improves accuracy.

Zak Smith did some great write ups:

6.5 comparison

6.5L

Re: 6.5x47 vs 6.5 creedmoor

Go with something Lapua makes brass for. Better quality means better accuracy.

Re: 6.5x47 vs 6.5 creedmoor

260, 243, 308 all suffer from the same piss poor case design
run it as SLR and well you have a good cartridge

6.5x47
Cost of brass makes this about pointless

6XC buy brass direct from tubb, Norma very good
run as 6mm or neck up to 6.5 and you have a large primer version of 6.5x47 @ half cost

Tubb/Norma 6XC brass is only $8 more than Hornady CM brass which would you rather shoot

for a TAK rig where losing brass in weeds is gonna happen
SLR makes most sense

I used to believe this also. Now, I'm not so sure. I originally bought Lapua brass for my .260 and it shoots better than any rifle I've ever owned. I attributed some of that accuracy to brass that is incredibly consistent and beautifully made. Just recently I bought a considerable amount of Winchester 7-08 brass, which is about 40% the cost, and formed it into .260. I did not sort in any way, and the worst group from virgin brass was .625", with most being in the .28-.32" range with one group at .160. All different loads. If this brass holds up, there will be no reason to pay the price for Lapua. I do have over 10 firings on the Lapua brass and the primer pockets are just getting to the point where I don't wince when I try to squeeze a primer into them.

So, we'll have to see what the life of the Win. is.

Stay tuned.

"Anyone with a rifle in any one of these three calibers would be silly to ditch a working system to switch to another of them-- they are that similar. Make your choice based on component availability and price. "

Let's see, .260 you have to deal with Remmington brass. Lapua has the least case capacity and very expensive brass. Creedmnoor - to be honest I'm not sure why there's a bias against the Creedmoor. When I get a 6.5 built it's what I'll be using.

Re: 6.5x47 vs 6.5 creedmoor

I'm assuming you reload...If not then start...If you don't intend to ever reload then 6.5 Creed is the clear choice economically.

6.5x47l uses Lapua brass, nuff said! There is no better brass. It lasts seemingly forever. The flash holes are drilled not punched like american brass. 6.5x47 brass is able to "leap buildings in a single bound",LOL...or in other words handles ridiculous pressures like no other brass out there, meaning you won't loose any primers from a worn primer pocket. It's very consistent brass in all respects. The case is short enough that you can have the barrel throated out farther enabling a bullets baring surface to be above the neck shoulder junction while still having room in a AI mag. The downsides...it's expensive and likely your bolt will need to be bushed and firing pin turned/fitted to avoid primer flow.

Not really, since it shares a case design with the .308 you can use brass made for .243, 7-08, or .308, so you can shoot just about anything out there. I've been using Lake City match 7.62 brass in mine, which required neck turning, but I just loaded a progression using 7-08 brass. Nothing exotic required- size them and you're done. I'd say brass availability and price would favor the .260, but these 3 rounds are so similar it's laughable when anyone touts any of them as being significantly superior.

Sacrilege!!!! Don't you know that no rifle is accurate unless you use the all powerful and wonderful Lapua brass! If you use it you can walk on water too!

LMFAO... I'm guilty of trying things to see if they work. I'm often amazed at what works that the "experts" say won't. The funny thing is most of them are just repeating what they've heard, instead of gathering hard data.

Re: 6.5x47 vs 6.5 creedmoor

I do reload. And how many grains of powder will they hold of h4350? How many loadings of the lapua brass should I expect to get and how many of the hornady? Thanks for all the help guys.

Yeah I agree John. I used to use Lapua brass back when it was $33/100 in the .308 but also used once fired BH for matches and guess what? They shot equally as well. Use Hornady now as I have a bunch of once fired and they shoot equally as well.

I go by my personal experience and take the "experts" with a grain of salt. Just cracks me up the huge pedestal Lapua is put up on. It's good but not the be all end all in shooting.

Re: 6.5x47 vs 6.5 creedmoor

You can probably buy Creedmore match rounds as inexspensively as you can reload them for...

Re: 6.5x47 vs 6.5 creedmoor

Creedmoor over 6.5x47 because of more case capacity. Hornandy loaded Creedmoor shoots well and is relatively reasonably priced, and very consistent. Plus, if you ever want to get a semi-auto Creedmoor is great.

Re: 6.5x47 vs 6.5 creedmoor

For the couple of you that are trumpeting the 6.5x47 over the 260 because you have to deal with Remington brass, I would like to welcome you to the year 2011 when Lapua introduced brass for the 260. It's also cheaper than the 6.5 Lapua. So, there is hardly any reason to ditch any one of the 6.5 chamberings for another.

Re: 6.5x47 vs 6.5 creedmoor

The gun, not the round choice, determines whether brass brand is important to accuracy.

The meaningful difference is the availability of Hornady ammunition for the Creed, and again, the common denominator is the gun; whether the loaded ammo shoots in THAT gun.

Other than this, there is no appreciable difference in these two rounds, particularly in exterior ballistics performance.
