I currently shoot a Remington 700 SPS tactical that sits in a bell & Carlson tactical medalist stock with a rifle basix trigger. I am able to achieve about .45-.50 MOA at 100 yards and from what I have been reading should be happy to achieve. However, I have always been a stickler to detail and very competitive in everything that I do. I intend on keeping this rifle as it is; however, I just purchased a brand new Remington 700 SS 5R mil-spec and was hoping that you guys could provide some guidance of what I could do to maximize accuracy.

I am seriously considering the following:

- Truing the Remington 700 receiver
- Installing Jewel trigger
- Adding larger bolt knob for ease of cycle

I could use guidance on the following:

- Whether or not the stock HS Precision stock is worth keeping or selling and put towards a different stock (possibly McMillan A5)
- What to do with the factory never fired 24” Stainless 5R mil-spec barrel
o Ideally I would like a match grade barrel, but I’m not sure if there is a market for selling the factory barrel or not (I’m trying to stay within a reasonable budget, but don’t want to be limited by the potential or lack thereof of the factory barrel)

I'm a bit confused.
If your intention from the start was to rebarrel, why didn't you just rebarrel your SPS?

Truing the action and installing a quality match barrel would have cost less than the 5R and you would have a better shooting rifle.

The HS stock is a very good stock, my 5R shot very well in it. I did upgrade to an XLR though. A McMillan is a better stock than the HS, for best results needs to be bedded though, which is another cost.

You may be able to sell an unfired barrel for 150-200. They tend to be good barrels.

I traded a pistol for the 5R mil-spec and got a really good deal that I couldn't turn down. I realize I would have been better of with a re-barrel of the 700 SPS but I essentially didn't pay for the 5R. So now I'm stuck between whether or not I want to modify a rifle that is currently shooting .45-.5 MOA or put some money into the 5R and get it shooting better than the SPS Tactical so that I can sell the SPS for some better quality glass.

I have heard nothing but good things about the 5r, I would simply shoot it and take it from there. The rifle comes with a decent stock and excellent barrel, I would consider selling the stock, if it doesn't work for you. Change out the trigger, I think there other options than a jewel, obviously my personal opinion. If the barrel doesn't perform to your liking, then sell it and at that time have the smith true the action and rebarrel it. Sell the sps for glass the 5r should really be a better performer.

Change out the stock. Look at a Manners stock
