I have a 300 WSM being built right now just for hunting. It is a stiller predator action with a #4 interrupted fluted barrel. My plan was to have it cut at 24" but the flutes are held back enough to cut it at 23" and still have at least an inch unfluted near the muzzle.

I'm thinking about having it cut to 23" because I think it might balance and look a little better. I'm guessing I'd only lose about 30fps. What do you guys run on your 300wsm's?

Re: 300 WSM barrel length

i have a old remington that started off life as a 300rsaum had the barrel redone to take the 300wsm the barrel length is only 22" and it shoots fantastic fast flat in fact i am looking at a gap right now and it has a 22" barrel on it. i had a 26 on a 7mag and cut it down do to bagging it on the deer blind walls and such.

Re: 300 WSM barrel length

I think the shortest you should make any WSM is 22" thats just me though. I'm sure that cutting off an inch wont affect performance much, just have it crowned and you should be good to go.

Re: 300 WSM barrel length

split the difference. what speeds are they running at now. you could figure out where they will be at when cut to 22-24"

...difference between 24 and 26 will be very minimal

Re: 300 WSM barrel length

I have one in a 24" and one in 26" I wouldn't go any shorter then 24". Pushing a 180 Accubond @ 2910FPS outa the 24". Can go up to 3000FPS but ran into pressure on warmer days. I have no problem hitting steel @ 1k

I'll probably leave it a 24" for now and see how it balances and handles.

Thanks,
