    Behind the Glass
I purcahsed a savage tr on thursday and have shot about 200 rounds through with no 5 shot groups better than 3" and some stringing as much as 8 or 9 " at 50 yards. I have tried cci mini mags, sk subsonic, winchester x, federal gold hv because they are the only ones I have found available locally. I have shot this rifle mostly of the bipod and have tried off bags. Its been cleaned twice, second time was just a bore snake. I thought maybe it was the bushnell scope I had on it, so i put a brand new nightforce on it and no difference. I dont think its me I took my 10/22 with open sights out and shot a 2" group at the same distance with the same ammo. I have also took it apart and chek the action screws. Do I just have a dud or am I missing something here. Im not sure trying different ammo would help. I would think this gun would shoot 1" at 50 with anything. I dont really want to send it back to savge so any help would be appreciated

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

Base was checked at the gunshop when they wounted the scope and I rechecked it when I mounted the nightforce. The wierd thing about the rifle is it would walk the shots in closer to bull, so the first shot would be 7" right and high and the next two might be 3" right and high and the last one would be 1" away. The rifle also wasnt consistent one group with cci was 2" high left and the next group with cci was low right.

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

I cheked that when I had it apart. Didnt appear to be any slop. I starting to wonder if its a headspacing issue

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

I was thinking this as well but a head space issue would get tighter grous as you took more shots. Did you check the bottom metal for loose fitment when checking the action torque. Does the crown look good

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

Do you mean tighter groups because of fouling or other reasons. It did seem to shoot tighter groups when I shot strings quicker. If I let the barrel cool at all that is when shots would be ridculous off. I was shooting a target that two bulls and they would hit on the other one sometimes which was about 8". Rifle definitely shot way worse cold with spuratic point of impact. It would actually shoot a couple shots close together in the strings when the rifle was warm.

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

I just remembered earlier I had two misfires. I went out to the drive way and picked one up and it had a light primer strike, could this be a symptom of excessive headspace

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

Damn. My Savage is a tack driver, sorry to hear that you are having some issues with yours. Not too familiar with Savage's models, but does yours have irons? If it does, try shooting some groups with just the irons to eliminate any scope or mount issues. If that is not the issue, then it would have to be the internals. I doubt if the ammo is the issue, as you pretty well established that with your 10/22.

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

With the light strikes it could be headspace but all the didn't casings would be the same depth

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

I was hoping this one would be a tack driver. The 10/22 adams bennett barrel I just got rid of would shoot anything under a inch a 50. Now I have to decide wether to spend the money to mail this back to savage or trade it for the cv I almost bought to start with

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

Don't suppose you have anything to make a cast of the throat of the barrel do you? That could answer a few questions.

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

With your hot and cold issues could be the barrel float. At any rate I have shoot three new savages in the past year. They all would shoot 1/2in. at 50 yards with the right match ammo, right out of the box. Ship it back to savage, the sooner shiped the sooner you get it back.

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

Got my savage tr back today and was a little disgusted at the results. They did send back a 100 yard test target that looked good, but no explanation of what was repaired or even checked. When i talked with savage early in the week they said the hammer was replaced. I am not sure what effect if any that would have on accuracy.mi guess I will shoot later and see, hopefully the results are good.

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

When my Mark II was new I had a slight problem with stringing, and with warm barrel groups. I tried 6 or 7 types of ammo. My gun turned out to favor Eley Sport. Also, my groups tighten up with a 'seasoned' barrel. The first 100 rounds through a clean barrel are not as consistent as I would like on this gun. I clean the bore a 500-700 rounds, depending on when that occurs in relation to the hunting season.
One more thing: I had some slight accuracy problems until I floated the barrel. Now it is better. I am satisfied with my Savage as a sporter model. I believe it would need a match bull barrel to make any great improvements in accuracy. I haven't checked groups lately, but my notes show pretty consistent 1/2" groups @ 50 yards. I use mine for squirrels. I'm good to go out to 75 yards, maybe a little farther.
    Good luck.

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

If your results are alot better i wouldn't be surprised if you didn't get a new barrel. unless it was marked and you know its not. When i got my first one i couldn't hit a 10 plate at 50 yards. I tried everything. Turned out the barrel only had rifling in about the first 10 inches. The place where i bought mine was happy to take it back in exchange for a new one. Which is a frikkin tack driver. I love it. I have vids of my 8yr old daughter consistently hitting a 15 in plate at 330 yards with SK match ammo. So easy she got bored. What ever they did i hope it fixed it. good luck

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

Results are a little better but still around 3 to 4 at 50'with any ammo. This is rifle is going down the road and i will never buy savage again

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

Sorry to hear about your problems. I have three Savage .22s, and my friend has two more that we use in training classes. Every one of them shoots better than .75 at 50 yards, even the very cheap sporter model we got at WalMart. My heavy barrel thumbhole model shoots .25 at 50 yards with SK Plus and Eley Sport. It sounds like you got a rare lemon, and I am puzzled why Savage did not make it right. What size groups were on the factory target that was sent back to you? II wouldn't keep any .22 that could only hold 3" at 50 yards, and I can't believe Savage would maintain that such a rifle meets their standards.

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

Bought a CZ452 in 17 hmr varmint to replace this rifle. I probably add a tacticool stock to it and I already have the bushnel 10x40 that I was going to use on the TR. I think this combo will be much more accurate any way.

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

Newbie here. Joined just so I can add to this thread. I purchased a Savage MK2 TR .22lr yesterday. Took it to the range this am and had the EXACT same problem. Bases and rings were tight. Action was tight as well. Tried 2 different scopes and 4 brands of ammo. 10" eratic "groups" at 50yds.

Frustrating. I'm going to give Savage the benefit of the doubt. I have a .17 that I have had no issues with. I'm going to assume they will make this right and my next report will be a positive one.

    To be continued....

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

I am not so angry that rifle was not up to par. I was pretty mad that they sent it back to me and did not even tell me what they fixed. I have owned a couple savages and all were decent, but this won turned me off savage for good I will by remington and cv for rimfires from now on.

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

I'm not "mad", .....YET. We'll see how this plays out though.

I was pretty frustrated and dissapointed yesterday at the range though.

Strange how 3 of us, just on this forum alone have had the exact same issue. Savage had a recall on this rifle some time ago for an issue with the scope bases being mounted incorrectly (I believe). Maybe we're at the onset of another one of their recalls.

This doesn't speak well for their quality control. Hopefully their customer service will make up for it!

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

I just got a TRR SR last week and shot it for the 1st time (in massive wind) still did remarkable. Mine seems OK. Hopefully they take care of you.

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

I have been waiting for a month to get mine back and repeated calls and frustration with the customer service lady ended up with her calling me back to tell me she exlained to the gunsmith what I told her and the gunsmith seen there was no rifeling in the barrel after 3in for about and inch and a half then the rifeling picks back up again. Long story short it got a replacement barrel and I'm still waiting on it.

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

So this is 4 of us with the same issue with the TR?

    This is not good!

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

What ammo? How many rounds did you fire before measuring groups?

My BTV prefers the Remington sub sonic hps (consistent sub 1/2" at 50y), but also likes the same type from CCI and Fiocchi. Doesn't do as well with wolf (3/4"), and the bulk stuff makes it 4" at 50y.

I do notice that when changing ammo that it takes 20-25 rounds for an ammo to settle in and start showing what it really does on a consistient basis. No idea as to what it takes after a cleaning since I don't run anything but ammo down the barrel until accuracy falls off - and it hasn't yet in a few thousands rounds.

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

I got mine last Thursday, TR, that is, haven't shot it yet, waiting for the rain to stop. Will let ya'll know how it turns out.

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

Congrats! Hopefully you have MUCH better luck than several seem to be having. Anxious to hear your range report. What part of Texas are you in?

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

North of Houston, Lake Conroe. I have a Remington 700 XCR Tac Long Range .308, and the TR is a very close copy. I bought it as a lower cost teaching tool. I really hope it works, my other Savage (Mark II, Mako) is a little tack driver, with the right ammo.

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

Sorry to hear about all these problems. I'm looking to get a .22LR trainer for a future centerfire build and Savage mkII was one of my choices. Sorry to say this has me looking away from Savage's rimfire line.

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

There's no e-mail contact info on the Savage website. They require that you call. I've been calling all am and have yet to speak to a human. "Due to unusually high call volume the wait is longer than normal. Please continue to hold for the next available ........". I've spent a sum of about 40 minutes on hold this am. On hold as I type this.

    Good times......

Wolf, CCI, Federal & Rem. Man, I'm not talking fractions of an inch. We're talking groups that are anywhere from 3" to 10". That degree of horrible performance can'r be attributed to make & model of ammo.

    A total of 200+ rounds.

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

    UPDATE!

Apparently staying on hold for 18:32 is the sweet spot for getting through to someone in the customer service department.

The customer service agent was very well trained and cordial. Points for that I guess. I was advised to ship it to them (on my dime!!) with a detailed letter explaining what the issue(s) happen to be. I was told the current turn-around time is 2-3 weeks.

They don't issue RA #s or notify you upon receipt so shipping w/ a tracking # will be critical.

I'll update further as things progress.....

    Good times.

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

Well I got to go out and play with the TR. The bore sight we use requires zeroing at 25yds and then moving up, to stay on the paper. Well using Blazer bulk crap, it will put 2 bullets in the same hole, with in 3/16 of an inch to the point of aim!! I just started to run out to 50yds, and was getting the scope zero at 50, and got called out for work. So the first 25 or so rounds were spot on. Oh forgot a detail we did have a 5-8mph tail to cross wind gusting to 12-15.
As I get time and more rounds down, I'll update yall.

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

Sounds like it is gonna be the shooter that Savage's are normally. Work out the details and start hammerin the targets!!

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

The cz452 in 17hmr i replaced the tr with is a tack driver. Anyone debating Cz or savage IMO cz is much better quality. There seems to be very little POI difference from 50 to 100 yards on the 17 hmr which Is going to make it a squirrel slayer

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

Shipped the TR back to Savage via UPS ground on Saturday. They should have it in a few days. And the waiting game begins....

    To be continued.....

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

I bought a Mark II FV-SR a week ago and my barrel isn't floated all the way up. So hopefully that will solve mine shooting 5inch at 200

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

    Hello,
I'm new to this Forum & know I will learn some new tricks.

I was looking at some of the problems individuals were having with their Savage M.K.-II rifles. I believe their were four.
I was curious what the Month & Year of Manufacturing they were?
Maybe a Q.C. problem for that run?

    I have a Mark II T.R. that was made February, 12, 2011.
I can shoot 50 yd. groups that a dime will cover. That is ,of course, using a bench, sand bag & bi-pod, no wind.
My M.K.-II T.R. has a free floating barrel, from the front stock to the receiver, no half way stuff, Mueller 4.5- 14 scope, Boyd textured black stock, fluted barrel, factory adjustable trigger, & Harris Bi-pod. CCI Mini-Mag, 1235 F.P.S. Nothing special.
To shoot nice groups you have to shoot your last shot as you did your first shot.
    R.

Re: Savage mark II tr problems help!!!

I got tired of fooling with my TR so I scrapped it and bought a CZ 455 Varminter. Too damn finicky.
