Im going to try a new round in my wifes 260. I want a good bullet she can use for targets and also use for deer, i was using 130 grain accubonds for deer hunting. Does anyone have any experience with a load that has worked for both targets and hunting.

Re: 260 round for targets and hunting

Sure, either the 130 or 140 grain Berger Hunting VLD. I've shot plenty of game with the 140, and am just now starting to use the 130. Both have shot well in my 260's, one an 8" twist, the other 9" twist.

140 Amax flat out kills, and is a dam fine target bullet, especially considering the price.

What he said.

I will be using a 260 for the first time this year as well. I will be using either the 140 berger or 140 a-max. I have been using ~47 grains of H4831sc with the 140 amax and in my 24" obermeyer barrel I am right at 2790-2800. Shot the tightest 3 shot group of my life with this load at 1000y, 6 inches.

id have to check my book but i believe my 140gr amax's are doing 2850 and are great for a hunting and target load

Re: 260 round for targets and hunting

I'm going to pick some of each up and try i have been using 4350 with the accubonds, i think i will try that powder to start off with. i was using 43.1 grains with the 130 accubonds and shot very well at 2823.

Re: 260 round for targets and hunting

You should have good luck with any of the 130-140 grain bullets listed with H4350, that's what I've been using and haven't needed to change it.

Re: 260 round for targets and hunting

I don't hunt with my .260; but if I did, I'd be using either the 140gr Ballistic tip or 139gr SST.

The 140gr Partition should be an excellent deer round, and may shoot well for targets too.

The 120gr Ballistic Tip is also good for hunting and targets probably inside 600yd, but I consider it more of a varmint bullet.

The 95gr V-Max is a devastating varmint bullet and can be used for targets at distances out to about 250yd IMHO.

My all-around magazine length target bullet is the 140 (not 142) SMK. For single feed, I prefer either the 142SMK or 140 A-Max.

These days, my all around hunting caliber is the .280 Rem. It's just a damned reliable, flat shooting death sentence for any game I choose to aim it at. Hornady Superformance or Custom 139 SST's; period. I figure a deer is worth using a $2.00 cartridge on. Makes a .243 look like a popgun. A 150 Ballistic Tip makes 1Kyd supersonic. What's not to like?

tigerfan9 that was a sweet link with some huge animals killed with lapua scenars .

Re: 260 round for targets and hunting

while they state that "match" bullets are not to be used for hunting the results speak for themselves. for typical NA game a match bullet that you can place where you want will do the job. Now for an african safari with very big thick skinned animals i would out for something different, but then again i wouldn't bring a 260 there in the first place.

Re: 260 round for targets and hunting

when i read that the amax were a match bullet i was a little concerned about game hunting with them, i was wondering too if you hit high shoulder with the amax and hitting bone will it penetrate and do its job like the bergers?
