gents,

i thought i would give ya a quick review of the streamlight super tac IR. i recieved this unit yesterday from DSG arms and ran some quick tests with it tonight. i must say that i am blown away by the long range performance of this unit. it is an IR led in a 2.2in deep parabolic lens that projects a solid concentrated beam with sharp periferal drop off to 300yds very well. i was using a pvs-14 pinnacle unit and it is complete overcast and was able to discern very good detail at 300yds with no magnification. this light weighs hardly nothing, runs on cr123 batts for up to 3.5hr constant, weapon mountable with push button tailcap and momentary switch capable. the best part is it is less than $100. it really is fantastic so far. i will get out on some song dogs soon with it and give ya a field performance report.

Re: Streamlight Super Tac IR

Great post. I had looked at that lite and wondered if it performed
like the visible version, which does very well itself.

Re: Streamlight Super Tac IR

mount it up to your Rifle & run some rounds thew it. Am curious if it holds-up to recoil & a solid product .

Also . if it weapons mountable ? is there any way to Adj. beam direction/POA when it is attached ?
.

i will do that and let you know. as for adjustable mounts i am not sure. i have it in a quick release mount that locks on a pic rail and is parallel my bore with no problems or need to adjust the beam. it is just big enough it covers the area you would want to shoot into. i have never needed to adjust any light beams on any of my prior light systems. now laser is a different story.

my guesstimation would be 3-4ft at 300yd or so. it is quite concentrated in my opinion compared to other units i've used. it flat smokes any surefire lights i've seen. i don't know about comparing it to something like da-torch but it isn't exactly apples to apples either.

FWIW...i contacted the engineer of this light at streamlight and he advised this light has been field tested for recoil on various calibers from .357sig to 12ga slug and reported no recoil issues.

Re: Streamlight Super Tac IR

Nice to hear on the Recoil .
Beam POA should be pretty close to the Reticule POA on mounting .
but is nice to be able to have the fine-tune & get it moved in shooters view threw the scope when you start to shrink/concentrate the Beam size smaller .
but this sounds pretty nice IR for hand-held or rifle mount .
.

Re: Streamlight Super Tac IR

wanted to give ya all an update. went out last night for a night session and while i didn't have any luck i did get to test the super tac at some field distances and can report usable light to distances of 600yd. while the beam was obviously larger i was still able to truly light up a tree line at 600yds and be able to observe something move or eyes reflect at that distance. i will say for absolute certainty that 0-400yd is awesome. the beam is tight and penetrates amazing.

Re: Streamlight Super Tac IR

I'm surprised I don't hear more about this light. I picked one up a couple weeks ago and just finally got to give it a good test tonight.

I agree with Killswitch 100%. This light rocks! I was able to light some trees at 850 yards. Granted, it wasn't super bright at that distance but there was a circle of light on the trees. I could light the neighbors windmill and see the blades spinning at 600 yards. Like the op stated you can see good detail past 300 yards with no magnification.

Mine has a fairly sharp circle of light about 6 feet in diameter at 100 yards on the side of the barn. There is enough spill to see plenty well at closer distance when shining the beam farther out.

I was able "rig" it up in a 1 inch detachable ring and my laser is right in the middle of the beam.

The only negative it's possibly to bright close in. To bad it doesn't have a multi function tail cap like the visible Super Tac does.

Re: Streamlight Super Tac IR

I also agree. While not perfect it is a lot of IR illum. for $$$$.

Added an extension past the lense to cut down the short range spill
somewhat.

Re: Streamlight Super Tac IR

Update:

I took my first IR Streamlight Super Tac out last weekend on a hunt with a client and the light kicks ass. It even beats the Torch. It has a nice narrow central beam surrounded by a generous (actually huge) spill area, that allows for pointing the light away from the target and still getting illumination without being overly intense.

I love Surefire, but this is $200 less than the Vampire light, and beats it in intensity and homogeneity of the central and spill area.

I'm amazed at this IR light and for the price, it will give even the LDI SPIR a run for its money. The only difference I see is that it will not likely be as durable, but for the price, you an buy two or three.

Big thumbs up to Streamlight. We have more demo units inbound for our other guides.

We are also working with Streamlight to get a variable intensity switch on them.

thats what i've been trying to tell people and they just don't believe me. these things are incredible for the price point.

Does anyone know if there is a mount for the streamlight IR that is adjustable for windage and elavation. Something similar to IRs that come with armasights CO-LR.
