hey what is your guys thoughts on armalite AR-10? I'm thinking of building a rifle off of a striped lower receiver from them

Re: armalite AR-10???

Solid system, quality target barrels. I have yet to see one of their stainless barrels not shoot 1 MOA or better. Armalite Ar10s are probably one of the most cost effective quality AR .308s.

Shoot me a PM when you are ready to buy. I am a dealer and can help you save even more.

Re: armalite AR-10???

Armalite lower will need an "Armalite" style upper also as the "DPMS" pattern upper receiver will not fit well. The rear of the Armalite upper and DPMS upper are cut differently.

Also the barrel extensions are different.

My suggestion would be to purchase a "DPMS" pattern lower receiver OR buy a matching upper/lower from manufacturers like Mega arms with the Armalite pattern mag if you want to use AR10 magazines.

Usually shooters that do .308 AR builds do so off of the DPMS patterned lowers which are more popular as well as more parts and different manufacturer options as compared to the Armalite AR10. If you want an Armalite rifle then buy a complete rifle from them.

Re: armalite AR-10???

I've heard nothing but good things about them from their owners.

During the ban they were great because they took modified M-14 mags. Now that the ban has been over for almost a decade and the standard has shifted to the original Stoner AR10/DPMS/KAC pattern (and especially with the inexpensive PMags in this pattern) they have fallen behind in popularity (but not in quality).

This year Armalite announced they will be retooling the line to accept the more standard KAC pattern and I expect to see an Armalite resurgence.

If you want to do a build I'd suggest sitting on your hands until the new pattern lowers come out. But then again you'll probably be able to swing a bargain on one of the older pattern ones and there will likely be a few good sales on the old Armalite mags but they'll eventually dry up and potentially become even more oddball.

This is good news. Not good news for me though as I have an AR10T running gen2 mags. Not a single problem since the gen2 mag. The gun shoots too.

I have 2 Armalite AR-10's and I am so happy with them that they are now my favorite guns.

Re: armalite AR-10???

They are making a SASS that takes Pmags now too

Re: armalite AR-10???

Own an armalite carbine that shoots light out....never had a single FTF/FTE in several thousand rounds. Its a least a 1MOA weapon if not better.....but I shoot with a trijicon reflex sight so tight groups are not exactly what I am going for. Multiple hits in center mass rapid fire is what I bought it for.

With the right ammo, it'll take pretty much every major game animal in the US with the right ammo an well placed shot.

Cant go wrong with an Aramlite. Top quality gear.

Re: armalite AR-10???

Dont buy based on a magazine. Would you buy a pistol because it takes a certain mag?

Armalite's Gen II mags, and M14 mags that are modified PROPERLY, are extremely reliable and durable to boot. To buy a rifle solely because of what magazine it takes is kinda illogical.

You wll train with that system, buy parts for that firearm, and magazines as well. Why does it matter if PMags cost 20$ if you will only get 10 or so? The difference is small, 15$ . Thats less than a box of quality factory ammo.

Sure, if you plan on buying a shit ton of mags, than PMags are the way to go.

Armalite is not retooling the line. They are make a special run of the "A" models that except the original "waffle" mags and any of its variants. Their main focus, which comes from Westrom himself, is what they have been doing, making "their" AR10 with their magazine.

They are testing the waters, to see if it will be beneficial enough to include to AR-10A with the B. I am sure that if they sell enough of the A version, they will eventually switch all the way and just make replacement parts for rifles like mine and so many others.

Im an Armalite fan, but Im not talking down about any other mfg. Just when I was shopping around, it came down to the Armalite. It just felt best in my hands. Which I feel is the most important. What feels best to you.

Not what mag it takes, or what barrel blank they use, or whatever. Its what FEELS best. Which might be an Armalite, or it might not. Only you will know. Just about every rifle can be redone and made to YOUR standards and preferences. You can even modify an AR10B to take PMags. So it all boils down to what you want.

Re: armalite AR-10???

I really like the Armalite AR-10 mags. I have 15 AR-10 mags, but have only used 4 in 5 years. The other 11 or still new in wrapper. These things are solid, and there are no mags out there better than these.

However, it's time Armalite go with the Standard (SR-25) and use what everyone else is using. It will only hurt them if they did not.

In time, I am sure they will phase out the current AR-10 completely. I wonder what parts will have to also change? I am thinking only the lower receiver and bolt.

If the current AR-10 is phased out, I sure hope that Armalite continues to support the current platforms with spares and magazines.

Re: armalite AR-10???

Reminds me of the VHS vs. Betamax contest.

Stoner-type magazines will win in the long run. When the military adopts something, it usually boosts the availability and quality of said item. Logistics matter! My 0.02...

Thanks for that link. So it looks like only thing that is different is the AR-10A Bolt Stop, Magazine Catch, Upper Receiver, and Lower Receiver.

I am not worried about lower and upper receiver. Bolt stop and mag catch are also not items that are likely to break or wear out.

Tech note also said Armalite will continue to support the old platform. So that's comforting news.

I have a 2001 Armalite ar-10A2 (carbine version). Of all the DI AR's I own this is my favorite to shoot. No problems of any kind....runs like a sewing machine even with dirty ammo. I shoot primarily 147gr South African mil surplus with FMJ's. on the carry handle is a Trijicon Reflex II sight with 2 moa amber dot. The thing is a best with a 25 round mag. Accuracy is around 1-1.5 at 100 yards. Great quality and value for the money....I haven't had to replace a single part yet!
