.223 reloading- help me decide...

Okay so I have two AR's, one with a 1:9 twist, one a 1:7 twist and a Rem 700 5-R w 1:9 twist. The two AR's are not precision guns; the 1:9 is a 16" SW MP15 and the 1:7 is a DPMS w/ a CMMG 14.7" barrel. 5-R is 20" barrel. I'd like to get a sort of SPR/precision AR sooner or later that would likely sport 1:7 twist.

So with that, I have a couple routes I can take-

#1, load all ammunition with the same bullet

#2, load the AR ammo with a cheaper bullet on my Dillon while I load a better bullet for the bolt gun and future precision AR via single stage.

At this point I have a couple thousand pieces of .223 brass of a couple different head stamps I had intended on using as bulk mixed- head stamp brass for loading AR ammo on the cheap. Will be ordering about 500 peices of Lapua brass soon for use in the 700.

I'd love to be able to get a bullet that will work great (1moa or less) in all guns, and be rather inexpensive; decent BC, acceptable performance out to 600m or so. But I know with such a variety of rifles this might not be do-able. But anyway, I'd like to hear some in-put on what bullets guys have had good luck on using in multiple guns across different platforms that can be had for a low price.

I looked on wideners and saw 75gr BTHP "match" "milspec" bullets for 5000 @$610, thought it might not be a bad deal but then I saw a few posts about the performance not being up to par.

Worst case I'd be alright with one bullet for the AR's that does 1.5-2moa and one for the 700 and a future precision AR that will likely do under 1moa. Of course I know this is highly speculative since performance is by no means assured. Just looking for input and places to look for the best bang for the buck.

Thanks guys

For the 1/9 twist, you are limited to the 69gr bullets. Those preform decent out to 600 yds but not any further.

The 1/7 twist will do well with the 77gr bullets but will shoot the 69's equally good to.

Re: .223 reloading- help me decide...

I would also recommend the 69/68 grain bullets for a one size fits all in your guns.

If it were me I would be tempted to try the 75 Amax in the bolt gun and something else in the AR's since the Amax won't mag feed.

Re: .223 reloading- help me decide...

any idea's on brand/places to buy in bulk for cheap? Can't really swing SMK's for my AR's- that could get pricy FAST

Re: .223 reloading- help me decide...

I have shot 55gr Hornady in my colt and a few of my buddies guns. They shoot well in all but I have not shot them out of a bolt gun.

Re: .223 reloading- help me decide...

Get a bit of 75gr hornady hpbt. They can be loaded to mag length and I have shot them from a 1/9 very accurately.

Re: .223 reloading- help me decide...

Since I restrict my AR15 to 600 yards, anyway; I just standardized on 69 SMKs. The 308 is for longer range.

Re: .223 reloading- help me decide...

Okay, so here's what I did-

Ordered 100 Lapua cases- I'll use these for testing

Also ordered:
100- hornady 75gr match
100- horandy 75gr amax
100- hornady 68gr match
100- 69 gr SMK
50- 77gr SMK

I'll see how they all shoot out of each rifle then decide if I can use one bullet for all or if I'll have to stock two different bullets. If one of the hornady bullets worked out, I'd be in business since they are a good bit cheaper than the SMK's

Re: .223 reloading- help me decide...

I think you'll find it best and cheaper to find a accuracy load with a more expensive bullet in the 700. Spend a little more $$$ on better components (brass/powder/bullets) for that rifle system - and then buy as cheap as cheap gets with the other rifle systems that don't get used for precision.
You don't want to be plinking a 14.5" 2 MOA barrel with 69 SMK's at $22.00 per 100 - you want to use the cheap 55gr $8.00 per 100 bullets for that.
