Stolen guns!!! Update local pd found all guns

Re: Stolen guns!!!

Sorry for my ignorance Branson1369 but what is the FTF? Also, assuming I don't have any paper on my rifles, how do I go about getting them "documented" in case this happens to me?

Re: Stolen guns!!!

FTF= face to face

As far as documenting your rifles if you bought them from a gun shop or had them transfered to a gun dealer from a private party the gun dealer should have some kind of paperwork showing you own the rifles. At least that is what I am used to.

As far as guns you bought from a private party and didnt do any paperwork between you and said party, I dont know how to get doc's at this point unless you can contact that person again?

That was the issue with my savage in trying to prove I owned that gun, luckly for my sake the PD worked with me and since the person who stole them confessed to stealing them from my house and that to her knowledge I owned the guns and she didnt. The PD ran checks in NCIC to make sure the guns werent prior listed as stolen and came back clean so the realsed the guns back to me.

As far as what info the PD asked for was the following:

Serial numbers
make and model
Anything identifiable on them
Any scopes bipods etc
value of the weapon
I also provided pictures to the Officer since the officer was unfimialer with two of the guns I has reported stolen.

Then they ask me to provide paperwork showing that I legally owned the guns, and had rightfully ownership to them.

SOrry for the spelling! </div></div>

Just wondering, what paperwork would show that you legally own a gun, maybe different laws?</div></div>

+1, We don't need or have paperwork to own guns </div></div>

Dont you have transfer paperwork you fill out or any federal forms asking questions aobut your background which those forms have gun make and model serial number and your name showing what day you bought it. You yourself wont have it but your gun dealer will have it on file. </div></div>

Not on all guns. Think about guns passed down from relatives. I have bought guns from friends. No paperwork is required in these instances.

Eddie

That was the issue with the savage, I got it from a private party so no paperwork in that case.

And never even thought of guns that have been passed down, wouldnt have paperwork on them either. Now im kind of curious when I speak to the PD again about this topic Ill ask them and find out what they would want to show for ownership from a private party/family

Re: Stolen guns!!! updated PD located them

That will work unless you've been buying guns for 15+ years. Good inventory with pictures/serial numbers/descriptions should be kept for insurance purposes. Do it guys...buddy of mine was hit the other day. Had some info...but not on the guns his father just willed him after passing. Absolute suck!

Take the time to document this information...and/or make sure you've got a personal valuables policy with your insurance company if you have a large collection (homeonwers insurance will only cover so much...and it's usually around $2k). Worth it.

Bitter...I'm sorry this happened to you...BUT CHANGE THE F!@#KING combo anytime you fall out of line with anyone who has access to your safe. If they were used in crime...you wouldn't forget that for the rest of your life. I know...seen it...felt it...BAD!!!

Re: Stolen guns!!! updated PD located them

Why would you give your GF access to your safe in the first place???

Either way, glad you got them back.

Here is WA, you don't have to register rifles or handguns. Most of my guns are from FTF and private sales. There are only a couple I can prove I bought from anywhere. That's B.S., if you can give a description and serial number, that should be all you ever need to do.

Re: Stolen guns!!! updated PD located them

Bravo combo is closed and lesson learned luckly nothing bad happened in all this with the guns. No one was hurt and no crime was commited with my guns. All in all never forget to change a combo again.

Mutt she had access to it for her guns she stored inside.

Re: Stolen guns!!! updated PD located them

An old school way to document your ownership or idea or anything else for that matter at a certain point in time is to mail it to yourself via registered mail with all the ends taped shut.

If you ever need to prove what's inside, have it opened in front of a judge. The post mark certifies the time and date and the contents will tell what ever tail you put inside.

It used to be known as "a poor man's patent".

The same can be done for inventory. Take pics, make them into REAL picture if you can find a place that still does it, document everything about what you took pictures of and send it. Once you get it take your receipt for the postage and paper clip it to the envelope and tuck it away nice and safe. Make sure you write on the outside of the envelope what's inside. If you sell some of it, get documentation and mail it to yourself. A copy of a drivers license is sometimes a pain in the butt to get but copying down the info doesn't take long and anyone not willing to provide doesn't need your gun. Remember this is about YOUR protection.

The real pain in the butt part is mailing yourself all the modifications you do to a weapon over the course of it's life. Just remember it's about protecting your butt and your investment.

Edit to add: Never EVER put down a dollar figure ANYWHERE. You want current value of that M1 Garand not the price you paid for it or what you traded for it in 1985.

Cheers,

Doc
