Has anyone had any experience with the first release of the leatherwood replica usmc-sniper marked 8x scope?

I'm looking for one of the old really long Unertl 8x or 10x scopes to put on an old 40x. Someone had mentioned the new Hi-Lux replica. Their web site says it has coated optics so I'm sure the quality of it is better than the old ones, but wondering if anyone has any experience yet? They look nice on their site.

Thanks

Re: Leatherwood USC replica

I have tried a Leatherwood, but not the USMC scope. I gave the Malcolm a try to see if I could run something with a period look on my 1885 45-70. The scope was fine; however, the mounts were bad, really bad. They fell apart under recoil. It used soft steel flat head screws that may as well have come from Home Depot, the dovetail mount that went where the rear barrel mounted sight goes was a poor fit at best and came loose after 3 shots, and the front mount would not hold the scope under recoil. It is an overall bad mounting system in a scope that is pretty much designed for the rifle it was mounted on.

The general consensus among BPCR guys is good glass, pretend the mounts are just packing material and toss them with the box.

When I realized that I was going to have to drop another ~$500 on a set of Unertl replica mounts (or something similar) to get it to work I sent it back to SWFA. As it is a hunting rifle and not a something for period competitions I went with a modern scope.
