I will be picking up a 284 single shot target rifle. I am looking for a scope sub $1,000.00 for it.
So far Ive narrowed it down to these choices..........
1) Weaver Tactical Rifle Scope 30mm Tube 4-20x 50mm Side Focus

2)Weaver Super Slam Euro Style Rifle Scope 30mm Tube 4-20x 50mm Side Focus First Focal Illuminated German #4 Reticle Matte

3) Vortex Viper PST Rifle Scope 30mm Tube 6-24x 50mm Side Focus

Im trying to figure the best scope in that range.... I got a weaver 3-10x, to say the least.... Im SUPER happy with the quality of the scope. The glass was as nice as my Leupold....
I hear that the Vortex scopes are GREAT quality and have awesome CS. I like the weavers, and cant choose. Its a target rifle, no need for a FFP. Anyone have these scopes, and how do you like them?

Re: Vortex VS Weaver VS ........ 6-24 Range

I'll take a whirl but I am have as many years of experience at this as I do posts. I will be biased to the Vortex.

I had a Nikon 14x with mildot. My turrets were MOA. I hate math. I did not want to convert between mil and moa in my head. In my case, I would not want the first Weaver you are looking at. Also, with a single shot, you probably do not need the added expense for FFP. Better to roll money into other features.

I like the reticle of the second weaver but, I want every scrap of magnification I can get. It has been cool but I have enjoyed the 24x and probably would love a 50x. I am old and blind so magnification is my friend. I am sure as the Oklahoma heat and humidity kick in, I will drop down in magnification to compensate for mirage. It's nice to have the extra magnification when usable.

Vortex. Love the reticle. I am an Okie. Love MOA. I hate math but keeping things in inches works well for me. Reticle matches turrets and I can range with it as well. The moron warranty is great as well. Even if I bonehead out, Vortex will take care of me. At $750, it is a great price but I would freak if I had to wait till June. Other sources are faster but will run you $100 more.

I have never looked through any scope other than my Vortex and Nikon. Glass on both are equal....again I am blind so YMMV. One day I will own a US Optics, S&B, or Nightforce (yes I have been lurking and reading). Currently, they just weren't in the budget. The Vortex gave me zero stop turrets, MOA reticle, illumination, and 24 of my desired 50x for under $1000. I am thoroughly enjoying the scope. I am thoroughly hating the wind!

Re: Vortex VS Weaver VS ........ 6-24 Range

I have the Vortex and am quite happy with it. Well, except for the fact that the reticle switch doesn't seem to work. Works if I unscrew it and mess with the battery, but once it sits in the safe a while it doesn't work again. I have no real need for a iluminated reticle, so some day I'll change the battery and if that doesn't work, I'll send it in and they will fix it for me for free. Aside from that, it's a great scope for the money. Has all the bells and whistles and good glass to boot. I traded a Nikon Monarch for it and the PST smokes it in the glass department and every other department as well.

I can't comment on the others as I haven't used them.

Re: Vortex VS Weaver VS ........ 6-24 Range

Cypris,

Whats up brother? Hope all is well.

I am in the SAME boat and looking at about the same list of scopes.

I am leaning towards the Vortex PST 6-24... I have one of the viper HS scopes on a 20" .223 tactical... its DAMN nice and the ONLY feature I did NOT like about it was covered turrets... but I have learned to live with it..

I like the 6-24 due to the tactical style turrets and reticle.. I could care less about illumination...but its there IF you need it..

I am needing to get one though in the next couple of weeks... soo I am torn between waiting...hoping one pops up on the sale list or... a different scope...

I DID look at a WEAVER TACTICAL in a 5-15 power range I believe. I got to play with it this past weekend. It was VERY NICE and worth the $700 ish price tag. It is built like a TANK! and has glass that is on par with the HIGH end scopes.

Let me know how you go...

Stay safe,

Matt (LEO SOUTH GA)

Re: Vortex VS Weaver VS ........ 6-24 Range

If you are looking for a scope under a thousand bucks, and think that value for money is important, then you should seriously take the time to have a look at Sightron's offer.

I was so pleased with my 4x16x42 mildot on my Rem700, that I bought another in 3x12x42 to put on my CZ 452.
they do make high magnification ones like what you're looking for...
those scopes have top glass (I've compared with Leupolds Mk4 and Bushnell elite 4200 in similar ranges), good settings (very crisp and audible clicks, repeatable and reliable), a lot of internal adjustments, a price in the mid range for a US design and Japan glass...not a cheap chinese crapola.

look at the Sightron SIII Long Range 6-24x50: 100 MOA of elevation adjustment! no less...

there's technical datas on them on the following page:

just my two cents...

Re: Vortex VS Weaver VS ........ 6-24 Range

I would have to say Sightron S3 6-24x50. Ive this scope since they first came out and had zero issues with it. The glass great and so is the tracking. I aslo have a 8-32x56 and love them both.

I won a Leupold Mk4 a few years ago and to me the Sightron is just as good. for almost half the money.

Re: Vortex VS Weaver VS ........ 6-24 Range

+1 I also recommend you check out Sightron. Their optics are superb for the $, tracking is excellent. Have had their 4.5-14x44 SII Big Sky on my .223 for almost 2 years - works great & holds zero.

They recently eliminated the side focus models from the SII line (still have in SIII) but if you don't mind adjustable objective, they do have an SII in 6-24. I mention this because they also have a $75 rebate, till 3/31, on the SII line (see their home page).

Go with the SIII's if you have to have side focus.

Re: Vortex VS Weaver VS ........ 6-24 Range

I have a Vortex 6-24x50 but in a FFP instead of the SFP that you are looking at. I absolutely love it!

Re: Vortex VS Weaver VS ........ 6-24 Range

still haven't had an occasion to look in a Vortex. my guess is that it's a top brand given the good reputation they have accross different countries.

to come back to what was said above, my feeling is that Sightron is the kind of scope maker that is underrated. paid my last 3x12x42 around 350$, a real bang for the buck.
OneShotJim, you're right regarding side focus. however, an adjustable objective isn't really crippling as a device: the 200/300/500 yards marks are quite close in rotation, and if you leave the flip open scope cover centered on your favorite distance, you forget it completly. in fact, paying maybe 200$ more for a feature such as side focus doesn't make that a difference for target shooting during the week-end. of course, it's a question of taste and priorities...
the BIG difference between the SII's and the SIII's is mostly the range of windage and elevation adjustments. SIII's don't really need a canted base for long distances. unless you shoot at very, very long distances.

Re: Vortex VS Weaver VS ........ 6-24 Range

I bought a PST from anther member here on the hide. Posted it here in the optic thread. Scott from Vortex picked up on it and walked through the factory. They had it back to me in a total of seven days! There are so many good scopes out there for sure? To me it is how the handle after the sale has been made???
The only two things they don't handle is theft and loss. How to you be that? Just my .02. Good luck I think it is harder to buy the scope then the rifle???

Re: Vortex VS Weaver VS ........ 6-24 Range

@Roy. Agree. Larger turret range in the Sightron SIII's is definitely a plus, if needed for the distances your shooting. My thinking also is that adjustable objective vs. side focus is primarily personal preference. In my experience, getting the parallax focus dead on is critical for consistent accuracy. Need to go w/what works best for you.

Re: Vortex VS Weaver VS ........ 6-24 Range

i'm impressed with my pst, but it is the best piece of glass i've bought yet, and i haven't had a chance to compare to any of the other you mention
