Since this is a question about factory ammo and not reloads, I want to apologize up front for posting in this forum. However I could not find a forum that was more appropriate.

I like Federal GMM in the 308 175gr variety. I recently ordered a couple of cases of Federal 308 175gr and upon opening them found what I perceived as a significant difference in what I am used to seeing. It almost looked like someone repacked the GMM box with milsurp.

The new stuff is tarnished and has a completely different headstamp. I'm asking the community here to tell me if they have ever seen or had Federal GMM that looks like the latest stuff I received? Or, does anyone know what the Federal headstamp on the pic below means?

Below are a couple of photo's of the difference between older stuff and the recent shipment. Shiny cartridge is old, dull and dirty is new. BTW, the new stuff shot different than the old as far as POI. I have reported this to the enterprise that sold me the ammo and I am waiting on a response.

Look at the box that the "tarnished" one came in...Does it say 7.62x51 Gold Medal Match instead of 308 Winchester FGMM?

Cabelas ran a deal on the 7.62x51 FGMM and I bought some. It shoots equal to the 308 Winchester FGMM. The cases just aren't shinnnnnyyyy and they have a crimp. Thats the only difference. Maybe the rounds were loaded to meet Nato 7.62 spec? Who knows, nevertheless, its good stuff, Shoot it!

Well you certainly nailed the source. However I don't see a difference between the two except one box says .308 and the other says 7.62x51. So which one is the REAL GMM? They may claim its the same, but my chronograph says the stuff I just got is not as consistent, nor does it hit the target in the same place, or group as well as the older stuff.

Its great fodder for my FAL but not so good in my bolt guns.

    Re: Factory Federal GMM Question

I think, therefore I could be incorrect, but I believe the 7.62 version is supposed to be like M118LR military ammo thus the dull looking casings.

    Re: Factory Federal GMM Question

.308 FGMM is the original. I too have heard the 7.62x51 is slower and is not as consistent, send the 7.62 back and get .308 match in FGMM.

The 7.62 is not the same as the FGMM 175. It is slower and not as accurate. The brass does have crimped in primers as well. It is fine for plinking but I wouldn't try to use it for any serious accuracy.

The Les Baer AR10 I put the FGMM 7.62 through easily shot bugholes at 200 yards.

Turbo54, you have a fine rifle and must be a great shooter.
I have personally found the 7.62 marked stuff to be less accurate. I don't claim to be anything but an average shooter but my rifle can shoot pretty well.
